The Geometry of StrategyConcepts for Strategic Management

Robert W. Keidel, Drexel University, Pennsylvania, USA

To excel in today’s exacting climate, organizations-both for-profit and not-for-profit-must integrate strategic planningand strategic thinking. Strategic planning tends to be aformal activity carried out periodically by top managers, butit is vulnerable in the face of fast-paced change. Meanwhile, strategic thinking is an informal activity that occurscontinuously throughout any organization, but it tends to benon-cumulative. Keidel offers a framework for integratingstrategic planning and strategic thinking that leverages thestrengths of both. The key to his work is the application ofsimple geometric forms-especially, 2x2 grids and triangles-that help organizational leaders and strategists structuretheir thinking and planning.

Keidel introduces four key strategic categories-persona(organizational identity), performance (what an organizationmeasures), puzzle (those complex challenges that anorganization faces), and pattern (how an organizationcompetes, grows, and organizes). Each of these categoriesreflects a different kind of thinking that matches a specificgeometry-point, linear, angular, and triangular. The payoff isa novel, powerful way to conceive, create, and communicatestrategy, as well as a set of conceptual lenses for ’reading’and assessing any organization, including one’s competitorsand potential partners. Keidel’s work is illustrated with casestudies from his own consulting practice and grounded inthe theoretical literature underlying the various geometriesof thinking.

This book will be a valuable resource for managerial andexecutive education in strategy, as well as a provocativereading for organizational strategy consultants andthoughtful practitioners.

FORTHCOMING2ND EDITION

Global Corporate Strategy and Trade PolicyAlan Rugman, Indiana University, USA andAlain Verbeke

Series: Routledge Studies in International Business and the World Economy

Twenty years after the first edition of Global CorporateStrategy and Trade Policy first published, Alan Rugman andAlain Verbeke’s seminal book remains as relevant to anexamination of the relationships between firms andgovernments as ever. As developed nations now face a sharprise in imports from rapidly developing countries such asChina and India, this groundbreaking theoretical analysis ofstrategic management and trade policy, with the authors’original framework now substantively updated andextended, may indeed take on a new kind of consequencefor students and practitioners of international business thanit did even twenty years ago.

Where once the core of the debate focused on the EU, theUS, and Japan, now the so-called ’core triad’ has extendedto the broad regions of Europe, North America, and Asia. The volume has long offered a sophisticated analysis of theinteractions between industrial / science policy and corporatestrategy. New to the second edition are extensive discussionsof innovation policy, clustering and its role in enhancingcompetitiveness, spill-over effects, international technologytransfer, trade and investment agreements such as NAFTA,the deeper integration of the EU, investor state dispute, andan examination of parent/subsidy relationships within theinternal network of the multinational enterprise. Additionally, the authors have written entirely new chapters analyzing theimpact of environmental regulations on corporate strategy, large firms’ reliance on sales within their home region, andthe role of NGOs in the formulation of both governmentpolicy and corporate strategy. Global Corporate Strategy andTrade Policy reintroduces the basic theoretical models ofRugman and Verbeke and demonstrates that these modelsremain required tools for contemporary scholarly analysis. This new edition also provides the first serious investigationof strategies for multinational enterprises in a world ofglobalization and regional economic activity, andincorporates new real world case studies into the historicalcontext of the volume’s original contribution.

Strategy ExecutionAndrew MacLennan, Heriot-Watt University, UK

Lively and direct, this work combines the rigour of academicresearch with the accessibility of practitioner-oriented texts.Focusing specifically on implementation rather than strategydevelopment and planning, a wealth of pedagogic features, including textboxes, practical models and plans as well asextensive examples guide both MBA/DBA students andpractising managers through this challenging yet essentialsubject.

Departing from the more traditional themes of mainstreamstrategy books, MacLennan brings the often neglected areaof strategy implementation sharply into focus. Ranging fromstrategic focus to the detailed management of activities toimplementation for competitive advantage, this book centreson a small number of process-based models that helpmanagers to:

• systematically break down high level conceptual planningto the concrete activities necessary for physicalimplementation

• test their plans and generate the detail required to managemore effectively in complex organizations.

Insightful and practical, with models supplementedthroughout by summaries of key content issues and clearsignposting to wider reading, this comprehensive andfunctional text provides a new approach to strategyimplementation in a clear and easy to use format.

Strategic InnovationNew Game Strategies for Competitive Advantage

Allan Afuah, University of Michigan, USA

’Although it was JosephSchumpeter who taught us thatinnovation is the engine ofgrowth in free-marketeconomies, it is Allan Afuah whoteaches us how to achievecompetitive advantage throughstrategic innovation.’ – Frank T.Rothaermel, Sloan Industry StudiesFellow and The Deedy AssociateProfessor of Strategy, GeorgiaInstitute of Technology, USA

In today’s fast-changing business environment, those firmsthat want to remain competitive must also be innovative.Innovation is not simply developing new technologies intonew products or services, but in many cases finding newmodels for doing business in the face of change. It oftenentails changing the rules of the game.

From the late 1990s to today, the dominant themes in thestrategy literature have been strategic innovation, the impactof information and communications technologies oncommerce, and globalization. The primary issues have beenand continue to be how to gain a competitive advantagethrough strategic innovation (what Afuah calls ’new gamestrategy’), and how to compete in a world with rapidtechnological change and increasing globalization. StrategicInnovation demonstrates to students how to create andappropriate value using these ’new game’ strategies.Beginning with a summary of the major strategicframeworks showing the origins of strategic innovation,Afuah gives a thorough examination of contemporarystrategy from an innovation standpoint with several keyadvantages:

•focus on developing strategy in the face of change

• rich in quantitative examples of successful strategies, aswell as descriptive cases

• emphasis on the analysis of strategy, not just descriptionsof strategies

• a detailed, change-inclusive framework for assessing theprofitability potential of a strategy or product, the AVAC(activities, value, appropriability, and change) model

• emphasis on the aspects of strategy that can be linked tothe determinants of profitability

• consideration of how both for-profit and non-profitorganizations can benefit from new game strategies.

ForesightThe Art and Science of Anticipating the Future

Denis Loveridge, University of Manchester, UK

Foresight: The Art and Science ofAnticipating the Future providesentrepreneurs, business leaders, investors, inventors, scientists, politicians, and many others with asuccinct, integrated guide tounderstanding foresight studies andusing them as means for strategydevelopment. The text dispels thebelief that anticipations are ’mereguesswork’, and conveys the depthof thought needed, implicitly orexplicitly, to understand human foresight.

The book examines:

• the role of foresight and its institutional counterpart in themodern world

• the epistemology underlying foresight

• the need to extend foresight activity into wider spheres, including sustainable development

Airline eCommerceMichael Hanke, SkyHapi, Airline E-commerceConsulting and Services, USA

Online travel is big business and has become one of themost popular items purchased by consumers on the internet. In 2005, US$106 billion was spent on online travel productsand services with air travel alone accounting for over US$65billion or sixty per cent. This represents almost a quarter ofthe total worldwide business-to-consumer (B2C) onlinespending.

A variety of contributing factors is responsible for thisdevelopment:

• first, the emergence of the internet and specifically theworldwide web and their commercial applications in themid 1990s

• second, a change in the behavior of consumers whothrough inexpensive internet access and growingfamiliarity with easy-to-use technology today shop 24/7from anywhere in the world

• third, airline companies use the internet not only as a newplatform to service, sell and market but – by cuttingtraditional supply channels and reaching directly to the endconsumer - also to realize cost savings in their distributionsystems

• fourth, the arrival of new intermediaries in the form ofinternet travel agencies (such as Expedia and Opodo),network affiliates, and mass sales and marketing websitesthat distribute travel products to the public.

Considering the above, airline companies all over the worldhave integrated (or are in the process of doing so) electroniccommerce or e-commerce into their business operations invarious shapes and forms. Today, it is no longer a question of’if’ for airline companies but ’how’ to deal with e-commerceand leverage it to enhance their competitiveness. This bookexplores these issues.

Port EconomicsWayne K. Talley, Old Dominion University, USA

Port Economics is the study of theeconomic decisions (and theirconsequences) of the users andproviders of port services. A port isan ’engine’ for economicdevelopment by providingemployment, worker incomes, business earnings and taxes for itsregion. The book provides a detaileddiscussion of types of carriers thatuse ports, the operation of cargoand passenger ports as well as the

operation of such specific ports as Hong Kong, Hamburg, LeHavre, Savannah, Miami and Panama.

Port Economics is the first contemporary textbook of its kind.It enhances our understanding of port economics by:

• classifying port users and suppliers of port services in thecontext of economic demand and supply curves

• denoting that the demand for port services has two prices, the price paid to the port by the users and the price (oractual and opportunity costs) incurred by port user carriers, shippers and passengers

• presenting the economic theories of carriers, shippers andpassengers.

The numerous up-to-date references will be of benefit tostudents and researchers of the economics of the shippingtrade; to government officials in developing port andshipping policies; and to port operators in understanding theport-choice selection process by shipping lines and othercarriers.

Large Emerging MarketsCompetitive Strategies

Peter Enderwick, Auckland University of Technology,New Zealand

The rise and continuing strong growth of emerging markets, and particularly the four largest emerging markets (LEMs) –Brazil, Russia, India and China – offer both opportunities andchallenges for international business.

However, recently there has emerged a growing consensusthat the increasing international competitiveness of theseeconomies now presents major challenges for the worldeconomy. These challenges are already evident in the formof record commodity prices, rising food costs, growingoutward investment and acquisition by LEM firms, increasedjob insecurity and growing income inequality in developednations, and demand for a restructuring of internationalinstitutions to reflect the shifting balance of economic powerin the world economy. At the same time a stalling of worldtrade talks, a growing recession in the West and increasedreliance on selective protectionism are all impacting on theprospects for emerging economies.

Large Emerging Markets goes the next stage of analysis ofLEMs. This important new text moves beyond discussing themere potential of LEMs for international business to considerhow they will impact on the very nature of internationalbusiness and the structure and operation of the worldeconomy. The rise of LEMs creates three sets of challenges:

1. For LEM-based enterprises as they seek to enhance theircompetitiveness and internationalize

2. For existing multinational firms as they increasinglyincorporate LEMs into their strategies

3. For the rest of the world as it adjusts to accommodatethe rise of LEMs.

Illustrated with short cases and discussion questions in eachchapter, this book will make for an outstanding text forcourses in international business strategy and emergingmarkets.

The Internationalisation ofCompetition RulesBrendan J. Sweeney, Monash University, Australia

Series: Routledge Research in Competition Law

The widespread move towards more market-driven models ofpolitical economy combined with the expandinginternationalisation of business and commerce has led to aseries of proposals for global competition rules. To date theseproposals have been hotly contested. A critical issue is whethersome form of international rule-making is required, or whethersoft law solutions are sufficient. Competition rules may berequired to combat the damage done by global cartels and todiffuse the tensions created when more than one nation seeksto regulate the same conduct. Competition rules may also berequired to protect the integrity of the world trading system.International rule-making, however, presents its own problems, not the least of which is a concern with protecting nationalsovereignty.

The Internationalisation of Competition Rules explores in depthwhether there is a rational foundation for pursuinginternational competition rules, and what form these lawsshould take. Brendan Sweeney investigates various types ofcompetitive conduct with a view to determining the nature ofthe international problems they present and the possiblesolutions. He takes examples from existing competition lawsaround the world, in particular the US and the EU both ofwhich have a long history of enforcing established competitionrules. He also examines existing unilateral, bilateral andmultilateral approaches. Based on this investigation, the bookproposes a minimum set of global rules.

This research work will be of great interest to postgraduatesand scholars and specialists in competition law, trade lawand the globalisation of business rules.

Tourism is often described as anindustry with high growth rates, andit is subject to radical change in howit is produced and consumed. However, there is still a relativelypoor understanding of how suchchanges are brought about – that is,through innovation. This book is thefirst to provide a comprehensivereview of innovation in tourism, while also considering how tourismitself contributes to innovative local, regional and national development strategies.

This is a groundbreaking volume which provides anaccessible introduction to a key but neglected topic.
