Serbia has long been a place of importance on the trade route between Europe and Asia, and because of its signi-cance, has had an unsettled past. From the Roman times on, there was much conict. Here are some of the most signicant events in Serbian history:

11th Century - The rst Serb Princes were recorded. Over the next three centuries medieval Serbia ourished as new trade routes opened up.15th Century - Serbia fell under the rule of the Ottoman Empire.19th Century - Serbia gained independence and by 1903 had developed a democratic constitution

The historic areas and buildings of Belgrade are among the city's premier attractions. They include Skadarlija, the National Museum and adjacent National Theatre, Zemun, Nikola Pašić Square, Terazije, Students' Square, the Kalemegdan Fortress, Prince Michael Street, the Parliament, the Temple of Saint Sava, and the Old Palace. On top of this, there are many parks, monuments, museums, cafés, restaurants and shops; both sides of the river Sava, not to mention views of the city from the Avala Monument, on a hilltop overlook-ing the city. Josip Broz Tito's mausoleum, called Kuća Cveća (The House of Flowers), and the nearby Topčider and Košutnjak parks are also popular

Page 11: strana 1-nova

Belgrade's Kalemegdan Fortress gives us an insight into Serbia's story. A Celtic tribe called the Scordisci rst started building defences where the Danube and the Sava rivers meet. After the Romans took over the Fortress, it became a part of their military frontier between east and west. The name Kalemegdan is very tting as it derives from the Arabic and Turkish languages and signies the 'Fortress amidst battleelds'. Today it is a major tourist attraction, with it’s most signicant monument ‘The Victor”, the symbol of Belgrade.

The rst of these areas is Zemun quay and the Danube shore. Zemun quay is the home of many of Belgrade boats that ply the Sava and Danube. The quay is great for a stroll or a roller blade when the weather is good and the area is probably best enjoyed during spring and autumn. However, its cosy restaurants and cafes, often with live music, oer a welcome respite during the colder months too.

Skadarlija is a vintage street, an urban neighborhood and former municipality of Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. It is located in the Belgrade municipality of Stari Grad (Old town) and generally considered the main bohemian quarter of Belgrade, styled as the Belgrade Montmartre.

St. Sava’s Temple on Vracar plateau, the largest votive temple of Serbian people. It’s basis measures 91x81m, capacity is 170,000 m3,and it can receive the congrega-tion of 10.000 people. On the central dome, weighing 4000 t, there is a 12m high gilded cross, the highestpoint in the city

SERBIAN MONASTERIES Serbian Orthodox monasteries are found throughout the Balkans, in Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Mace-donia and Montenegro. This foundation of monasteries followed the forming of the rst Serbian states start-ing in the 10th century. The rst monasteries were built in the Raška region, in the Southwestern Serbia, then Kosovo and nally in Central Serbia. Fleeing the Turkish tyranny, the majority of Serbs migrated to the North. Shortly thereafter, the rst monasteries on the Fruška Gora Mountain were established. The monasteries walls were illuminated by frescoes reecting the artstic styles of the time. Some of this frescoes are extremely valuable art treasures like the frescoes in the Sopocani monastery and the Frescoe of the White Angel ("Beli anđeo") from the 13th century in the Monastery of Mileševa now under the protection of UNESCO. Dečani Monastery, Patriarchate of Peć, Gračanica Monastery, and Our Lady of Ljeviš are also listed in World Heritage Site list, as "Medieval Monuments in Kosovo".

The church of St. George, along with karadjordjevic dynasty mausoleum, were built on the peak of Mali Oplenac. Situated on the slopes of the same hill was the capital of Serbia. Topola, a small town between Belgrade and Kragujevac (restored in the nineteenth century). Topola became a place of historical signicance during the Serbian U[rising in 1804. It’s leader, Karadjordje Petrovic, born nearby, built a fortied town with towers and a church. In 1903. Petar Karadjordjevic remembered Topola as a native place of his ancestors, decided to build a church and mausoleum on the hill above the town for both his ancestors and descendants.
