What the poster was doing was absurd on its face and in its substance. First, as noted above, it was a straw-man diversion to the real discussion of ‘expanding’ Chiropractic scope of practice to include other professions’ procedures and therefore compensations. Second, if anyone knows anything about BJ Palmer, his love for cutting- edge technology stands out strongly. BJP was a pioneer of radio and broadcast media. He incorporated x-ray technology before the medical profession did. He had all kinds of cutting-edge, high-performance technology to help with the primary focus of his life – Chiropractic: the detection, location and assistance in the correction of vertebral subluxation. I would dare say that had he lived into the present day, he would have had many Apple, Samsung and Dell products all doing his bidding and helping his passion – further progressing this profession of Chiropractic. Another point the author was trying to make was partially valid. He wanted to say that tradition was detrimental to the progress of a profession. On the contrary, tradition has value in as much as it keeps us connected to our history and to the trials and failures of our past. Tradition should never trump the philosophical principles upon which a profession is based. In the case of religion, tradition should only support doctrine but never supplant it. I agree with him, if we hold on to tradition in spite of principle or worse, contrary to principle. However, the argument that tradition has no value is ludicrous. Lastly, to infer that our profession’s scope of practice needs to be expanded into areas outside our stated purpose based solely on the argument against tradition and the straw-man diversion of technological advancement is baseless. All of the proposed scope expansions were fleshed out by BJ Palmer, his associates, students and following philosophical disciples. Medicine, therapies, injectables, lotions, potions, rubs and oils – all were specifically and generally addressed in many of their writings over decades of time. So to say that the Chiropractor that chooses to stay within the strict guidelines of the Principles and Tradition of Chiropractic is ancient and stuck is absolutely baseless. The Official Voice of Straight Chiropractic in New Jersey

BJ Palmer and the iPadBy Dwayne Hoskins, D.C. • [email protected]

Recently I saw a Facebook post that put up this straw-man argument: if BJ Palmer was around today, based upon our traditionalist stance, he would NOT be using an iPad, and neither should we. What the poster was doing was absurd on its face and in its substance.

First, as noted above, it was a straw-man diversion to the real discussion of ‘expanding’ Chiropractic scope of practice to include other professions’ procedures and therefore compensations.

Second, if anyone knows anything about BJ Palmer, his love for cutting-edge technology stands out strongly.

On the contrary, tradition

has value in as much as it keeps us connected to our history and to the trials and failures of our past.

A Letter from the Editor

As a long-term practitioner of Straight Chiropractic, I’ve often been told by other Chiropractors that I practice “a limited form of Chiropractic,” and that what I do is much too limited a scope for their liking. Usually, I just let their rants go, since it usually comes from folks who practice a Chiropractic that is good for low back pain, stiff necks, earaches, stenosis or herniation (decompression), sciatica, thyroid disease and myopathy, etc., while I am practicing a Chiropractic that is good for every one of the 48 quadrillion cells in our body and allows for the healthy and coordinated function of each and every cell, so that each cell may function for its own good and the good of the whole approach. Some of these sad losers actually self identify as “straight” since they purposely mislead themselves and the public into believing that because the only therapy they employ is the adjustment.

The fact of the issue is, as it always is, quite simple. Chiropractic is divided (yes, we, as all professions, are divided by differences in approaches…it’s okay) by the purpose/objective of care, that is, some desire to treat diseases and some desire to correct VS merely because it is negative and harmful to life. I follow the latter and unlimited objective of practice. Yes this UN-limited objective applies to all the billions of people on our planet, an UN-limited number, freeing their nervous system to function more perfectly, UN-limited perfection and allowing for the UN-limited expression of Innate/Life. Wow, now that is a Vision, an unlimited perfection of the unlimited expression of Innate in the unlimited peoples of earth. It is with this unlimited Vision that The Garden State Chiropractic Society welcomes the reader of this humble journal, that would be you, to further explore and understand that you may participate in changing the world.

Enjoy.

Majors & MinorsThe Minor Problem With the Major WorkBy Andy Roberts, D.C. • [email protected]

greater importance of some over others, adjusting ONLY important ones.” In both the Metric and Major & Minor systems, we note a predominance of this concept of addressing the cause of disease as we can see when BJ Palmer writes in History Repeats, “Under this system (Majors & Minors) we classify symptoms of four given troubles above and possibly find that two or three of the diseases this case has are adaptative to one or two subluxations, hence are minors of major; adjustment of the latter taking care of the former.”

So in these systems, the person’s symptomatology would drive the assessment of the Chiropractor. They might present with heart problems, bladder problems and low back problems; the Chiropractor would do nerve tracing and heat reading (with their hands and NCM <Neurocalometer> later on) to follow the path from the “diseased” part to the spinal nerve origin and thus to the offending vertebral subluxation. In the system, they labeled the spinal levels as the H.P. (Heart Place), Li.P. (Liver Place), At.P. (Atlas Place), etc.; then armed with the symptoms and their assessment, they would “adjust” the H.P. for patients suffering from heart problems making the assumption that heart disease was more grave than liver disease and so on.

Fast forward to today, we like to boast of our advances in understanding and application. We apply what we learned in Chiropractic College and what our journey has added to that knowledge base. But have we advanced? Have we grasped the differences and subtleties in our Chiropractic philosophy and action in our art? The most prevalent chart

in Chiropractic is the Spinal Nerve Chart which most versions not only show the distribution of nerve to body but conveniently comes with a list a problems and symptoms relative to each. A harken back to Majors & Minors of disease-mapping and “adjustment-treatment.”

Are we truly objective in our practice? Are we not biased by our education? Are we not swayed by the visuals we have around us? Do we pay more attention in our analysis to the Atlas with people suffering from headaches? Do we pay more attention to the L5 and Sacrum for those suffering with low back pain and/or sciatica? Do we focus on the mid-dorsals for those with digestive issues? Are we still stuck, albeit not purposely in the model of old; the treatment of disease or the cause of disease? Do we allowed this to creep into our decision making process without even realizing it?

Chiropractic art, our chosen technics should be the application of the philosophy through the lens of our science. Revisit your decision making process and critique the objectivity of your measures. Remove the antiquated thought that has pervaded our profession since its inception. Think cause, the cause of health, the cause of life. Have objective measures that are relevant and relate to the components of vertebral subluxation. Become masters of our craft; solid in our philosophy, understanding our science and expressing the masterpiece!

It has been 119 years since the founding of Chiropractic with the famous “adjustment” of Harvey Lilliard by Daniel David Palmer. The philosophy, the science and the art have all gone through evolutions of development from that first pivotal event to today. The question is have we truly progressed or have we just changed our terms? Have we truly understood the basis of this concept we call “Chiropractic” in all its ramifications or are we just mimicking what we did in Chiropractic’s infancy just with a cooler look?

In his often quoted statement, “I desired to know why one person was ailing and his associate, eating at the same table, working in the same shop, at the same bench was not. Why? What difference was there in these two persons that caused one to have various diseases, while his partner escaped disease” seemed to be his focus. We can see that focus even more clearly with another of his quotes, “Chiropractic is the first science that dared to fearlessly pronounce subluxation to be the cause of all disease.” This is the theme for the birth of Chiropractic. However, academically we know that the proper question in Chiropractic is, ‘what is the cause of health and in the bigger picture what is the cause of life?’ But are we still steeped in a variation of this original poor choice of words and concepts?

BJ Palmer wrote, “The PSC (Palmer School of Chiropractic) discovered, developed and presented Majors and Minors principle and practice to stress a limited adjustment of fewer places, of more vital value to life and death. Majors and Minors did not deny number picked by metric system, but stressed

PRESIDENTIAL PERSPECTIVES

The Outlook for Straight ChiropracticBy Jay Yuhas, D.C. • [email protected]

Hello Folks,

While the outlook for straight chiropractic, on the surface, may appear bleak, I

really do see good things happening for the profession. The profession in this

context is defined as the practice of straight chiropractic.

Insurance reimbursements are at an all time low and regulators are closing the

doors on multidisciplinary billing schemes that do not cut the mustard. In other

words, the relationship is a fraudulent billing practice only.

So, we have all these students coming out of school with no where to go and

not knowing what to do. Enter groups like GSCS to fill the void. The student loan

hurdle can be overcome as programs are in place such as income base repay-

ment plans where they can pay only 10 to 15 percent of their income and have

the rest forgiven after 25 years.

I think this is a great time to educate students coming out of school about what

we have to offer and having our members speak at the schools.

Remember, our vision is for the world, right? Lets do it, one spine at a time!

Sincerely,

Jay Yuhas, DC

in the right direction, with the right energy. But Innate does it all. As Chiro-practors, we only look for evidence of interference to it, without judgment and without anticipation of anything other than restoration of expression, proceed-ing until there is lack of that evidence.

Manipulation is an ugly thing. It’s an educated, desperate attempt to con-trol. It’s presumptuous, domineering and never satisfied. Whereas the Chiro-

practor becomes comfortable with not knowing, the therapist can never know enough. It constantly tries to microman-age every thing in every way. And if the illusion is complete, it’s but a temporary respite for those daring enough to try. The result is only coerced matter adapt-ing to ego. They often say, “the salts move the bowels,” but it is always the bowels that move the salts and that’s an awfully salty thing for manipulators to swallow. Just the notion that an intelligence is al-ways in charge of its structures only an-gers those doing otherwise.

Sitting in an orientation room is like

We Don’t Need No Education... By Matthew Alvord, D.C. • [email protected]

We live in a world of control. It’s the outside-in way. It tries to make things other than they were intended to be, not being satisfied with the outcome of incoming intelligence. Call it ego, call it ignorance, call it the euphemism of “good intentions,” the result is a world led away from its true calling: It’s birthright, it’s right at birth, it’s right to the ability to be right, and expression is always right.

In Chiropractic, we don’t control any-thing. Not one thing. Nothing. No thing and no intelligence within any thing. To control something requires judgment of the effect of how something should be, rather than trusting its cause and then simply concerning ourselves with the removal of interference to it. We let it do whatever it is supposed to do, when it is allowed to be as it should be. We as-sume the source is good, so we also as-sume its effects are good and therefore its expression is good. What is good should never be suppressed.

Chiropractic philosophy recognizes and respects the Innate Intelligence within the living body that creates life from literally no thing and no matter, into an organized, physical representa-tion of the intentions of its creator. This is not only our birthright, it is our right at creation, our “creation right.”

The beauty of the Chiropractic ad-justment is to let beauty be. The nature of a humble, educated force is to intro-duce a potential resource to the source so it may pick and choose from what it deems useful. The specific adjustment is done in the right place, at the right time,

lying on a Chiropractic table. If we ap-proach it like we should the adjustment, I think we stand a better chance of res-toration between the ears as well. Care scare is like technique trauma. We can try to force segments and mindsets to do our will, but it only results in soreness and illusions of compliance within the spine and within the people sitting in our orientations. We should find them, accept them where we find them, and then introduce a force that allows them to say on their own, “Wow, that makes sense!”

This excitement is a sign of revela-tion. It is the joy of internal restoration expressing a clear mindset, set on itself again without interference from the outside-in mentality. “We don’t need no education, we don’t need no thought con-trol,” we just need revelation. Otherwise, we are just another brick in the outside-in wall. Suggestions outside the ears can only allow what must occur within the ears, and it’s specific and timely. The right word, the right picture, or the right pamphlet at the wrong time just falls on deaf ears, blind eyes and a closed mind. Forcing ideas on an unreceptive mind just puts up stronger defenses, because no one likes to be controlled. Outside-in orientations can’t produce inside-out understanding, and understanding Chi-ropractic is everyone’s “creation right.”

The mind moves the bone to the table to be checked and the mind does the deciding about this new principle it just heard at the orientation. The mind

The beauty and the strength of non-therapeutic objective straight chiro-practic (NTOSC) is its simplicity. Unless one can say, “No, some people are bet-ter off with subluxations than without...,” how can that be argued?

I don’t believe that NTOSC says we’re the “only” chiropractic. I believe we say we are the purest form of chiropractic. This profession has the habit of trying to improve upon chiropractic by adding to it. It seems like many have the “per-fect partner” for chiropractic. Whether it be nutrition, or exercise, psychologi-cal work or anything else. You can’t add anything to perfection to try and make it better. And by the way, I’m not knocking any of those things. The fact is, they are just not chiropractic.

I believe the only reason that few reach NTOSC is not because they can’t, it’s because they don’t want to. NTOSC is a humbling position because we re-alize how very little our educated brain knows about our own body and knows even less about someone else’s body. I really believe that that is a very hard po-sition to take especially after doing two, three or four years pre, then three and a half years of medicine with a half year of chiropractic thrown in. Not to mention the tens of thousands of dollars it costs to obtain this.

Unlike traditional straight chiroprac-tic (TSC), our work is not based on re-sults other than “is the body now unsub-luxated?” It is not that our work doesn’t get results because it does. We just can’t predict the results. We can say however,

TSC vs. OSC By Tom Gregory, D.C. • [email protected]

with 100 percent certainty, 100 percent of the time that every human being under every circumstance is better off without subluxation. Whether they are sick or not is irrelevant to what we do. Every person without subluxation ex-presses more of the life potential that is genetically instilled within them.

On several occasions Reggie admit-ted that what he developed as non-therapeutic chiropractic which is now NTOSC, was not the original intent for chiropractic. The first adjustment was given for what, to correct subluxation? No, it was given to cure deafness. And every adjustment after that was given to cure some ailment. While Reggie was in Palmer he heard BJ always say, “Chi-ropractic gets sick people well. Stay with chiropractic after you recover and it will keep you well.” Not once did he hear BJ say that if you weren’t sick you should be adjusted. So Reggie developed this concept in 1957 in Spring Valley, NY. And from this sprang NTOSC developed by Joe Strauss, upon which the The Garden State Chiropractic Society and The Chi-ropractic Trust is based.

Reggie also at one point developed spinology which is even another step further than NTOSC. Spinology takes you out of the health field, out of be-ing a doctor and allows the freedom of not being associated with sickness and disease, a problem still faced by NTOSC-tors. Both NTOSC and spinology were created out of refining what was given to us by DD and BJ. It was refined and made purer.

TSCtors are taking the path of add-ing more and more to their armamen-tarium, simply because it is their goal to get sick people well. (As a side note, it is not true to say “the power that made the body heals the body.” The power that made the body SOMETIMES heals the body. Not all sick people get well, I think you’ll agree, regardless of what they do for their problem.) If that were my goal, to get sick people well, it would be idi-otic to try and get all sick people well with just spinal adjusting. If that were my goal, I would add everything in the book, it just makes sense.

GSCS Straight To You! • Winter 2015 7

A few years ago, at one of the GSCS

meetings, I participated with a group in

constructing a visit-by-visit explanation

of chiropractic to practice members.

Each subsequent visit was about two

minutes in length. The group’s CONCEN-

SUS invented about 40 subsequent visits

in only two hours.

Let me give a few examples. Sup-

pose that you are at visit #3 with your

practice member. After you check her

spine, just before she leaves the adjust-

ing room, you might say something like,

“Mrs. Jones, do you remember when I told

you that if you don’t have any symptoms

that doesn’t mean that you are healthy?

What does that mean to you?” Most

BJ Palmer and the iPad Continued from page 1

Now, to those that want to change our scope of practice, I say back to you – that is not progressive, that is old, tired, worn out and frankly misguided. It has been tried, and failed, reworked and tried again, only to fail. YOU are the traditionalist that has placed your tradition ahead of principle. I would even dare say you are falling prey to our detractors and those that want us to go away permanently, acting as their pawn.

And I will also say this. If you LOVE motorcycles and want to devote time to the proper mechanical operation, proper use and enjoyment of motorcycles and subsequently want to sell motorcycles, then by all means – sell motorcycles. Just don’t call it Chiropractic.

Step-By-Step. Inch-By-Inch. Visit-By-Visit.By Claude Lessard, D.C. • [email protected]

It is true that the most important

thing we do as chiropractors is the ori-

entation. Simply put, the orientation

consists of telling the story of what

health is and what health is not, what

chiropractic is and what chiropractic is

not, what subluxation is and what sub-

luxation is not, what an adjustment is

and what an adjustment is not. Once

this is done, then it is time to talk about

what is expected of those who choose

to begin care (responsibilities of both

you and the members, as well as fees

and office policies). The best scenario is

to give the orientation before care be-

gins. That way everyone who chooses to

sign on will know who you are, and most

importantly, who you are not.

As you can see, the pre-care orien-

tation provides INSTRUCTIVE INFORMA-

TION to the prospective members of

your practice. When the person chooses

to begin care based on that information,

it is now YOUR responsibility to ensure

that they understood your orientation.

WHY would you want to do that? If I were

to ask you to tell me “what does principle

#27 of chiropractic’s basic science state?”

Would you know it right away? Hmm…

Well, in order to ensure that your mem-

bers understand your orientation, you

must serve them bits and pieces of in-

formation and education at EVERY sub-

sequent visit… and then, throughout

their LIFETIME! It truly is the SUREST way

to keep people. How do you do this, you

may ask?

Before I share with you a simple

method, let me remind you that the

word “doctor” comes from the Latin

word “docere” which means “teacher.”

A teacher educates. The word “educate”

comes from the Latin word “educare”

which means “to educe, to draw out.” It

is really a matter of “drawing out” of the

practice member your orientation, piece

meal, bit by bit, according to WHO they

choose to be at each visit throughout

their whole life. Let’s face it, we are, all

of us, still learning chiropractic. Should it

be any different for your practice mem-

bers?Continued on page 8

Editor’s Note: The key to success is not the new person, it is the regular and continuing person…here is “how.”

Page 8: Straight To You - Winter 2015

Step-By-StepContinued from page 7

people will remember and share some

response with you. If Mrs. Jones replies

with something that makes sense, con-

gratulate her for being smart and a good

listener. If her reply needs some work,

take a few seconds to gently remind her

of one of the examples you used in the

orientation. Then ask the question again.

“What does that mean to you now?” Af-

ter her answer, you give her something

short to read and you tell her that you

are looking forward to her next visit.

Suppose you are at visit #19. You

might ask something like, “Mrs. Jones,

do you remember how many cells I said

there are within your body?” Yes, that’s

about right, many gazillions! What runs

makes itself up, never the Chiropractor, and it’s the made up mind that moves the body to be checked regularly for vertebral subluxations. Any mind that gets convinced to do something it is not set to do on it’s own will only be tempo-rary, but you also couldn’t talk someone with the right mindset off a Chiropractic table. We should be constantly aware of the nature of our adjusting force in the orientation as well as the table. As in the words of the proverb, “Doctor, HEAR thyself…”

EducationContinued from page 5

The more you add, the more sick people you can get well. Unfortunately it is this adding that takes you further and further away from the core of TIC and into the realm of physical medicine. If that is what you wish to continue in, it is your option. You will have a lot of company!

BJ was known big time for his slipping and checking. He would start out with an idea and if he didn’t like where it was taking him he would back up and start again. I haven’t read BJ anywhere near as much as Joe and Reggie. But I have a feeling like they do, that the direction BJ was headed in as he was nearing his death in ‘61, is the path that would have led him to NTOSC and/or spinology.

Is it an easy path? No, it is a major job trying to de-program the public from the tyranny of inductive thinking, and introduce them to the beauties of deduc-tive thinking and put them back in charge of their life and health. While it is a tremendous responsibility it is also a tremendous opportunity and The Garden State Chiropractic Society and The Chiropractic Trust welcomes anyone wishing to travel that path.

all of them? Yes, you are correct! INNATE

INTELLIGENCE! Wow! YOU are the best!

Then, you give her something to read

and say, “See you next week Mrs. Jones.”

Suppose you are at visit #31. You

might ask, “Mrs. Jones, do you remem-

ber what the distance between the sun

and the earth is? It’s 93 million miles and

it maintains that distance even though

the earth orbits around the sun at 66,000

miles per hour. Do you think that the uni-

verse is well organized?” She would have

to reply “Yes.” You might add, “Well that

is the first principle of chiropractic’s basic

science. We call it the major premise. Well,

Mrs. Jones, you are learning a whole lot

about chiropractic aren’t you?” Give her a

copy of the major premise and say, “I bet

you can’t wait to come next week to find

out the FAMOUS question!”

I am sure that you get the point.

This is HOW you construct a solid edu-

cational system. It takes only two min-

utes at each visit and the advantage is

that the orientation will be “drawn out”

of EVERY new member. Also, in order

to keep track of EVERYONE, let me sug-

gest that you develop a way of knowing

which visit number the member is com-

ing for today. A simple way to do it is

to have the C.A. clip a post-it note onto

the travel card that says for example,

V3- symptoms. V19- 400 trillion. V31- 93

the C.A. checks the visit number on the

travel card. It’s now ready for the next

visit which will be clipped with the ap-

propriate post-it. Or you can track the

visits with your computer using a similar

method.

This is not a script; neither is it YOUR

script. You have to invent your own

educational system based on YOUR ori-

entation and YOUR understanding of

chiropractic. Remember that when you

educate your orientation from the prac-

tice members, they are more likely to re-

member it and follow through with their

visits for their entire life. In this way you

don’t have to keep building your prac-

tice, you just need to maintain it. And

that’s why I choose to call this educa-

tional system: VISIT-BY-VISIT!
