Premier’s Reading Challenge
“Reading gives us some place to go when we have to stay
where we are” Mason Cooley
This was particularly true last year with the restrictions of
movement as a result of COVID-19.
For many of our children reading became a higher priority as
something they could do, and share with their families, as they
spent more time in their homes.
Each year our school has an amazing participation rate in the
Premier’s Reading Challenge but in 2020 89.59% of our kids, R-
7, completed the Premier's Reading Challenge. This is the
highest participation rate since 2016. We hope this focus on,
and enthusiasm about reading continues into this year.
The Premier’s Reading Challenge is now open for 2021 and we
encourage all children to take part. Class teachers manage the
recording of student reading for the challenge in different
ways, depending on their year level and level of independence.
More information will come later in the term once teachers
have had a chance to set their expectations with their class
regarding this. The students have until September to meet the
criteria of the challenge.

SEVEN STEPS TO WRITING SUCCESS
Last year the Stradbroke Staff were introduced to the Seven
Steps to Writing Success resource. It helps teachers deliver
engaging, high quality writing programs to our students. This
year we continue to use this resource to develop and extend
student writing of narrative, persuasive and informative texts
- with a good dose of fun!
I have included a parent tips sheet this week, and across the
term I will add a page to explain each of the steps for narrative
texts.

EXTERNAL PROVIDERS AT STRADBROKE SCHOOL
An external provider is an organisation or therapist who is
engaged by families, through the National Disability Insurance
Scheme or through private funding, to work with their child.
-
Excellence and Achievement in a Supportive School Environment 3
Many families and external providers are requesting that the
school provide facilities and times for students to leave the
classroom and attend sessions with therapists. This is causing
substantial pressure on space, timetables and teachers
learning programmes, as well as the school’s ability to provide
appropriate duty of care.
The core business of schools is teaching and learning.
Therefore it is essential that each child’s education is the
primary focus of their attendance and participation in school.
We ask that all families be aware that all external providers
must ask for permission to provide services to students at
Stradbroke School. The site leader is under no obligation to
accept these requests and the decision will be made on a case
by case basis.
The Department for Education requires extensive
documentation and agreements to be reached prior to any
non-department organisation being allowed to provide
services within a school site. The external provider is
responsible for providing this to the school. Parents must also
give written permission for services to be provided during
school time.
Please ensure that if you are contacting a service provider
through NDIS or privately that they are aware of the processes
in place at Stradbroke. For further information, please contact
the Front Office.
ATTENDANCE
Absence
Please telephone the school between 8.15am – 9.30am on
8365 5621, email the school on
[email protected] or notify us via the
Skoolbag app if your child is absent. If children are absent and
a message has not been received, an email will be sent to
Parent 1 requesting that they contact the school and explain
the absence.
Late
If your child is late (after 8.50am), a caregiver must accompany
him/her to sign in at Student Services in the Front Office before
going to the classroom.
Early
If your child needs to be away from school during school hours,
e.g. to keep a dental or doctor’s appointment, a caregiver is
required to come to Student Services in the Front Office and
sign their child out before leaving the school. Please note
children are not permitted to wait in the pick-up zone as it is
unsupervised. Children must be collected from the Front
Office. On return, an adult must accompany the child back to
Student Services and sign them back in.
Exemptions
If a family holiday/travel is planned during term time, a student
exemption form (ED176) needs to be collected from the Front
Office, completed and submitted to the Principal for approval.
ENROLMENTS FOR 2022
If you have children already at Stradbroke and you have a pre-
schooler beginning school next year, please contact the Front
Office and collect an enrolment register application for a place
to be held.
ROOM K7 “PLAY IS THE WAY-ISH” START TO 2021
School-ish, brave-ish, routine-ish. Our Year 5 class has been
reading inspirational stories, including the picture book ‘Ish’ by
Peter H Reynolds. Sharing the story of Ramon and his artistic
journey helped us to reflect on being brave and pursuing our
personal best. Playing a range of new games has also allowed
us to get to know our new class members, as we settle into the
school year together. As part of our Monday morning routine,
we write a quote in our diary to reflect on during our week.
Here are a few for you to enjoy:
“Be willing to be a beginner every single morning” Unknown
“You can learn something new every day if you listen”
Unknown
“All things are difficult before they are easy” Thomas Fuller
From the students of K7, Miss Bec Williams and Tali de Lacy
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
Three Stradbroke students, Amy L, Emma S and Mia B are
performing in the musical show “Mary Poppins” at this year’s
Adelaide Fringe Festival in February. The girls will be in three
(of six) performances by the Adelaide Theatre Academy at the
Norwood Concert Hall (February 26th evening show and 2
shows on February 27th at 11.00am and 3.15pm). Mary
Poppins is a nanny who comes to look after the difficult
children Jane and Michael Banks. Mary uses a mix of magic
and common sense to teach us how to value each other
again. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the
nanny who advises that “Anything can happen if you let it”. A
truly supercalifragilisticexpialidocious show that will have the
whole family smiling and laughing together. The show is rated
G, and suitable for the whole family. Tickets now available
from the Adelaide Fringe website.

INSIGHTS
Helping your child become the best student they can be
The new school year is full of excitement and possibility for students and parents. Regardless of how a child or young person haspreviously performed, this year oers a chance to set a new course.
While it’s tempting as a parent to make the attainment of good academic results the main priority, this is a narrow view that maybe incompatible with long-term success. It’s wiser to broaden your view and focus on helping your child or young person becomethe best student they can be. Here’s how.
Encourage learning
The rapidly changing world and workforce that your child will enter requires that they have a willingness to continually learnand adapt. The concept of a lifelong learner, previously lauded by educators with an eye to the future, has now become a reality.Learning and continual improvement should be embedded in each child’s psyche so that school life is just a starting point to alifetime of learning, growth and development. Help your child see themselves as successful learners who achieve results throughhard work and application, and that nothing is beyond them if they apply themselves.
Promote leadership
Leadership is required in all walks of life including at school, at work, in families and in the wider community. Help your child seethemselves as a leader by focusing on personal leadership capacities such as planning ahead, communicating clearly, beingaccountable for their behaviour, developing emotional awareness and fostering good relationships with siblings and peers.Personal leadership development provides a strong foundation for the development of leadership skills in more public forums inlater life.
Applaud independence
The school years are critical for the development of independence, which can easily be closed down by the roadblocks ofimpatience, overindulgence, fear and lack of time. Alternatively, independence is promoted when we show patience, provideopportunity, display confidence and teach students how.
Embed wellbeing
If there is one dierence that modern schooling is making to the next generation it’s in the leadership they have shown in recentyears to the maintenance of mental health and wellbeing practises. Parents can support their child’s long term wellbeing byembedding wellbeing habits including healthy eating, exercise, sleep, relaxation techniques, regular time in nature, gratitude andmindfulness.

Teach socialisation
If you want your child to be liked by others, it’s essential to spend time and eort developing the skills and attitudes needed tosucceed. Develop in them an awareness of how their behaviour impacts on others, instil manners and community-mindednessand develop a broad range of friendship skills that will assist them to relate well to others.
Foster resilience
2020 showed us life is unpredictable, full of ups and downs, straight balls and curve balls. It’s the unpredictability, the downs andthe curve balls that develop kids’ resilience. How parents and teachers react to the hardships, frustrations and diiculties kidsface either hamper or foster resilience. Spoil, overprotect or pamper and growth opportunities are wasted. Support, encourageand teach kids to cope and you’ll be helping them develop a real sense of psychological hardiness and resilience that’s essentialfor long term happiness and success.
Make this year a memorable one by helping your child grow and develop into the best student they can be. Keep the focus broadand do all you can to ensure that your child sees themselves as a confident and continuous learner.
