STR7 Unsymmetrical Bending and Shear Centre

STRUCTURES

DescriptionThe experiment hardware fits onto a Structures Test Frame(STR1, available separately). It examines the vertical andhorizontal deflection of different asymmetrical sections atvarious angles and loads.

Two multi-way chucks hold a test specimen vertically. Onechuck has an indexing system for rotating the beam in setincrements. This changes the angle of loading. The otherchuck and a weight hanger applies a variable load. Twodigital deflection indicators measure deflection in the x andy directions. An interchangeable plate allows students tofind the shear centre of the specimen.

The lecturer guide provides details of the equipmentincluding sample experiment results. The student guidedescribes how to use the equipment and gives experimentprocedures.

For extra ‘virtual’ experiments, TecQuipment can supplythe optional TecQuipment Structures Software (STRS), foruse on a suitable computer. The virtual experimentssimulate the tests you can perform with the hardware. They also extend the choice of tests beyond that availableusing only the hardware, for example: higher loads, uniform loads or different test specimens. This extends thestudent’s learning experience.

For automatic data acquisition of your experiment results,TecQuipment can supply the optional Automatic DataAcquisition Unit (STR2000). Supplied as standard with theSTR2000 is TecQuipment’s Structures Software thatdisplays and logs your experiment results and gives theextra virtual experiments.

STR13 Continuous and Indeterminate Beams

STRUCTURES

DescriptionThe experiment hardware fits onto a Structures Test Frame(STR1, available separately). Students rest a beam on up tothree ‘piers’. The piers are movable, so students canarrange them in many different positions under the beam.Students use masses on weight hangers to load thebeam. They can also attach the flexible beam to abackboard to measure deflection or fixing moment.

The piers each contain a load cell to measure verticalreactions. These connect to a Digital Force Display (STR1a,available separately). Two of the load cells have knife-edgesupports, which students can either fix or allow to sink bya set displacement. The third pier load cell allows studentsto either clamp the beam (encastré fixing) or rest thebeam on a knife edge. The unique design of thisequipment allows the load cell to resist the bendingmoment while accurately measuring the vertical reaction. To measure beam deflection, the backboard has a digitalindicator which students move along the beam. Thebackboard also has a mechanism for measuring the fixingmoment of a propped cantilever or a fixed beam.
