Sub-Theme/5: The Work That Pleases God.Topic: Expanding The Kingdom: The Challenges And
Costs.Texts: John 16:1-4 & 33; Matt 10:37-39;
Mark 8:34-38.Aims: i. To understand the meanings and implications
of challenges and costs in expanding God’s Kingdom;
ii. To note Jesus’ prediction of challenges for believers in the course of expanding the Kingdom;
iii. To come to terms with what it costs to expand the Kingdom of God.
Introduction: There are challenges and costs to expanding God’s kingdom. Both challenges and costs can adversely affect Kingdom expansion. For example, persecution has been a major challenge to Kingdom expansion the Church of God has faced through the ages. But because Jesus saw it ahead, and had His own share, we should neither be dismayed nor be afraid of them. Our Lord Jesus made it clear to His disciples that following Him will often require carrying our cross. Taking up the cross involves forsaking all to follow Christ (Mark 10:37-39). Only those who are ready to carry their cross do well in expanding the Kingdom of God and please Him.
Study Guide1. How has persecution been a major challenge to the
Christian faith?2. Mention various contemporary challenges we face in our efforts
to expand the Kingdom and what should be our consolation as Christians amidst them. John 16:33; Rom.8:35-39; 2Cor. 11:21-27.
3. How should Christians respond to persecution? Matt. 5:10-12; 10:23; 1 Cor.15:58; Acts 4: 23-24; 2 Cor. 12:10; James 1:2-4, 12.
4. What is the cost of following Christ and expanding the Kingdom? Matt. 10:37, 39; 16:24; Mark.8:34;
Acts 7:59-60; 12:2-3.5. a) What will be our reward from God for denying ourselves and
taking up our cross for the Kingdom’s sake? 2Tim.4:6-8; Rev.7:13-17; Rev.21:7.
b) What will be the lot of those who abandon the cross? Rev.21:8; Luke 9:26.
Conclusion: Challenges have often been aimed at discouraging or stopping Kingdom expansion but they have instead, often produced a bumper harvest of souls. Costs have spread the Christian ministry and gladdened Christ’s heart. Be willing to follow these golden Christian steps!
Food For Thought: You want to wear the glorious crown then you must be willing to wear the crown of thorns now. No cross, No crown!
Memory Verses: Matt. 5:11-12.

LOVE IN ACTION: ROMANS 12:9-10.Let love be without hypocrisy, cling to what is good. Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honour giving preference to one another (NKJV)
In the last meditation a rhetorical question was ask ‘do you love the next person to you?’ this is the baseline that some of us will easily turn around by asking do I know if the person next to or close to me loves me. If such question is ruminating in our heart that simply tells us that we still have a long way to go. The word of the Lord did not say we first love God but rather God first loved us. These two chapters of the Bible Romans 5:8 and John 3:16 proved to us that God first loved us when we don’t know Him or have anything to do with Him, He did not care but He loved us, therefore it is expected of us to love the next person to us and not expecting the love of the other first.
The gospel according to Luke 16: 19-31, the rich man and the beggar, Lazarus if we reconsider the request of the rich man in verse 24 and Abraham’s respond in verse 26, you will agree with me that Abraham saw the willingness in the eyes of Lazarus, he responded …those who want to pass from here to you cannot’. In the simple way to say the willingness is there. What is love? Has been attempted but love in action is the thing we are considering today. A dictionary defines action as the fact or process of doing something, typically to achieve an aim. That is evident in the story just narrated, Lazarus while on earth did not count the neglect of the rich as evil
but he saw the opportunity to be fed and not thrown out.
Our text is an expression of love in action. Nevertheless, the first part of it spoke about not hypocritical in action; this is a pointer to the fact that there are people who will claim to love but in the inner heart of heart they don’t love the other person, they are full of deception, what they have to gain or the evil intention they have to execute. Love is practical and it does not pretend, let us not be fooled or be discouraged to demonstrate our true and sincere love towards others. The bible text already gave us the alertness that there are loves with hypocrisy and such love are superficial and untrue. I want to urge us to show love towards one another not for what we have to gain but for what we have to give. We cannot live a balance if we
are untrue; if we do our lives will not give glory to God.
