Notes:

SET UP EXPECTATIONS

● Say: Welcome to Kids’ Club, we’re so glad to have you here! We want this to be a safe and fun place for you. To do that, let’s all commit to doing a few things:

○ Show respect to each other○ Listen when someone else is speaking○ Have fun!

INTRODUCE THE BIG IDEA

● Ask: Around here, we talk a lot about a guy named Jesus–why is that? (Let kids respond.) Yep, he’s God’s Son who came here to rescue us and bring us close to God!

● Ask: If you’ve heard stories about Jesus before, how would you describe him? (Let kids respond.) Great answers! Jesus was a lot of things–powerful, loving, perfect–but today, we’re going to talk about one thing in particular about his life. Jesus was LIKE US! He was born as a baby and he had to learn how to walk and talk. He played games, had friends and brothers and sisters, and he was a kid like you are right now!

● Say: So here’s today’s BIG IDEA: Jesus knows what it’s like to be us.

JESUS WAS LIKE US

● Say: Jesus experienced all the good and bad parts of life. He laughed and cried and even got angry. There are all kinds of stories in the Bible that tell us about this, so we’re going to watch a video and see some of the regular, everyday things that Jesus went through. As you watch, figure out one way that Jesus was like YOU!

● Video: God’s Story / Jesus Was Like Us (4 minutes)● Say: Put up one finger if you found at LEAST one way that

Jesus was like you. Who wants to share? (Let kids respond.) Was anybody else surprised at how many things Jesus did just like us?

● Ask: Why is it such a big deal that Jesus was like us? Why does it matter that He went through human things, like we do? (Let kids respond.)

● Say: Having a God who knows how hard it is to be human, is a pretty amazing thing. Imagine if Jesus didn’t know what it was like to go through all the sadness and hard things that we go through. I don’t know about you, but it makes me feel so much better to know that I’m never alone in my feelings. That I have a loving rescuer who knows exactly how I feel. How does that make you guys feel? (Let kids respond.)

● Say: Now let’s reenact some things that we love to do as kids, that Jesus might also have done!

Time: 10 minutes

Big Idea: Jesus knows what it’s like to be us.

Supplies: ● Paper squares

(1/kid)

Video: 10-Minute Countdown Timer

PREPARE

● Start the 10-Minute Countdown Timer● Split kids in small groups.

HOW TO PLAY

● Say: Tell kids that we’re going to think about what makes it so fun….to be a KID!

● On paper squares, have kids write down (or draw) things they enjoy doing, or things they like in general. (Things they do because they’re kids, like playing on a playground, playing sports, going to school, games, being silly, drawing, dress up, etc.)

● Collect the squares, and then shuffle them up on the floor/table. Let kids take turns getting a random square, and acting out what’s written/drawn.

● Tips:○ If kids have trouble reading, help them out and whisper

what’s on the card (or what they think is on the card!).○ If you have a younger group, or don’t have enough time,

just let kids take turns sharing what they wrote/drew instead of acting them out.

PREPARE

● Start the 10-Minute Countdown Timer.● Break into small groups.

RESPOND TO THE GAME

● Get the game cards out and set them in a pile in the middle of your group. Each card has a statement on it that describes something Jesus did in the Bible. Some of the descriptions show his human side (like us), and some of them show how he was not like us (the part of him that’s God).

● Let a kid pick the first card and read it aloud. Then, they have to say whether they think it’s something we have in common with Jesus, or something that’s different from us (that only God could do).

● If kids have trouble guessing an answer, or if it needs explanation, discuss WHY that part of Jesus is similar to us, or not!

JESUS KNOWS US INSIDE AND OUT

● Say: Let’s look at a verse from the Bible that describes Jesus. It’s from a book called Hebrews, and as we read, you’ll notice there’s a special title used to describe him.

● Slide: Hebrews 4:15 We have a high priest who can feel it when we are weak and hurting. We have a high priest who has been tempted in every way, just as we are. But he did not sin.

● Ask: Hmm….what do you think “high priest” means? (Let kids respond.) It’s a special way of saying that He gave himself as a sacrifice for us, so we could be close to God, even when we make wrong choices. Now let’s see exactly what this tells us:

○ Jesus understands exactly how we feel when we’re weak, or hurting, or lonely, because he himself had those feelings.

○ Jesus knows how hard it is to be tempted to make wrong choices. The difference between him and us though, is that he never sinned!

● Say: Jesus was NEVER selfish or greedy or mean. He NEVER hurt anybody. He was perfect, he never made a wrong choice, and he followed God every single day.

RESPONSE TIME

● Ask: Right now, think of one thing you’ve felt recently–sadness, anger, happiness–and imagine how Jesus might have felt that way too. As we do that, let’s watch a music video called “He Knows Me”, that’s all about how Jesus loves us and knows us inside and out.

● Music Video: KC Acoustic / He Knows Me

WORSHIP AND PRAYER

● Say: Let’s worship Jesus with a more upbeat dance song! You can stand up, clap, show off some dance moves, and sing along as we give Jesus all our attention and energy.

● Music Video (Optional): I Am Yours● Pray: Invite a kid up to pray!

Time: 15 minutes (or until parent pick up)

Big Idea: Jesus knows what it’s like to be us.

Next Step: Choose one way you’ll try to be like Jesus.

Supplies: ● Door hanger

template (1/kid)● Markers (1 set)● Scissors (1 set)

EXTRA TIME?

● Give kids maze and word-search activity sheets to work on until their parents pick them up.

ICEBREAKER QUESTION

● Break into small groups. Go around the group and let every kid answer this question: What’s your favorite board game OR video game?

RESPOND TO THE STORY

● What things do you do, that Jesus did? What kinds of things would he do if he were a kid today?

● Do you think Jesus felt sad when he was your age? What makes you feel sad? What other emotions do you experience that Jesus did too?

● What’s the one MAIN difference between us as kids and Jesus as a kid? (Jesus never made wrong choices; he was perfect.)

● Read today’s verse as a group: Hebrews 4:15 We have a high priest who can feel it when we are weak and hurting. We have a high priest who has been tempted in every way, just as we are. But he did not sin.

● Discuss: It helps to know that Jesus has gone through the same things as us.

○ Start off by asking kids: Have you ever felt lonely? Has anyone ever gotten hurt? (Let kids raise their hands.)

○ Does it help, or not help, to know that others feel those things too? Does it help to know that Jesus went through those things and understand how you feel?

MAKE IT PERSONAL

● Say: If Jesus was like us, then that means we can be like HIM too! Even though none of us are perfect, we can try to follow him every day, and live like he would live.

● Give each kid a door hanger template and set out scissors and markers.

○ This week’s next step is to choose one way you’ll try to be like Jesus.

○ Let kids write or illustrate their next step on one side of the door hanger.

○ Then cut the door hanger out, including along the dotted line. They can hang it on a door knob at home (somewhere they can see it everyday and be reminded how they want to be like Jesus this week).

● On one side of the door hanger is this week’s verse. Have someone read it out loud for the group!

PRAY

● Ask kids if there’s anything they want you to pray for, and then pray as a group.
