Extracurricular Update
Mrs. Boyle’s Grade 6 Class
Message from the WCMS Administration This month marks the end of the first term of the school year. These first months
have been marked by a lot of learning and growing as we settle into our new facility. The play-
ground equipment is finally completed and all open. This has been very exciting for students.
The drama and music clubs have been meeting weekly – we look forward to having access to
the theatre facility in December and seeing what the drama club has been preparing! Thank
you so much to our families and community for supporting our magazine subscription drive.
The numbers are still being finalized, but it looks as if this was extremely successful and will go
a long way to supporting our extracurricular and out-of-school/field trip programming. We
have much to celebrate in our extracurricular programs this November. A big thanks needs to
be extended to our volleyball coaches and players for organizing the mini-tournament on Octo-
ber 21. Participating schools communicated how much fun, how well organized, and what a
great facility we had to make this a successful day. Congratulations to our cross country team
as well who had a strong showing at the district competition that included the Bantam Boys
title and two students finishing in the top of their age category. Finally, both of our Grade 6
boys and girls soccer teams were able to claim the championship plaques last week. November
will be another busy month as we look forward to three way conferences, progress reports,
and the grand opening celebration – look for more details on these events within this news-
letter.
Warman Community Middle School November 2013
Grand Opening for WCMS!
The Honorable Don Morgan, Minister of Education, will be a special guest at Warman Community Middle School on Friday, November 15 at 11 a.m. The Minister will participate in a special program to celebrate the school facility and mark an official Grand Opening. Our school com-munity is invited to be a part of this celebration! Our celebration will be held in the gym with parking for parents and guests in the Legends parking lot.
WCMS is seeking 1-2 individual or groups of students who would be prepared to perform for the staff, students, guests, and dignitaries at our grand opening celebration. Interested parties should contact Mr. Tebay to express an interest and prepare to audition on Thursday, November 7 at 3:30.
Student-Parent-Teacher
Conferences
A final reminder that we have three-way conferences scheduled for Tuesday, November 5 and Thursday, November 7. All students and their parents/guardians will meet with the student’s homeroom teacher. Thank you for registering through our online scheduler. If you still need to book an appointment, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher. Don’t forget to stop by our School Community Council’s table set up in the first floor foyer.
Progress Reports
Term One Progress Reports will be sent home with students on No-vember 18. The progress report document can be kept, but the enve-lope should be signed and returned to the student’s homeroom teacher.

Remembrance Day
Program
Please note that WCMS staff and students have been invited to attend the Warman High School Remem-brance Day program on Friday, No-vember 8 at 10:00am. We will be walking to/from WCMS so please ensure that your child is dressed ap-propriately. Poppies will be available by donation.
Warman Community Library We are happy to announce that the Warman Community Library in War-man Community Middle School will officially open on Friday, November 1st. We look forward to serving both the students and staff of Warman Community Middle School and the public library patrons. Please feel free to come by during regular public library hours to see our new facility!
IMPORTANT NOTICE: All students who did not
previously have a Wheatland Library Card have received NEW public library accounts. For these NEW accounts, we need to see proof of identity and proof of address of a parent/guardian. A Sas-katchewan Driver’s Licence is best, but other com-binations of identification are also accepted. IF YOU ARE ATTENDING PARENT-TEACHER INTERVIEWS ON NOV. 5th OR NOV. 7th, PLEASE STOP BY THE LIBRARY TO SHOW THIS IDENTIFICATION! Otherwise, please come into the library at your earliest convenience to veri-fy your child’s account. THANK YOU!
Tell Them From Me survey tool
Through the month of November WCMS students will be participating in the Tell Them From Me survey. This will entail each student completing an anonymous online survey that will take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete.
The Ministry of Education is providing the license for use of the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) student and teacher surveys to all Saskatche-wan schools. The TTFM surveys will facilitate the engagement of teach-ers and students from grades 4-12 in collection of data related to their opinions and experiences at schools. The decision to use the TTFM sur-vey and evaluation system was based upon input from school divisions through the bi-annual Continuous Improvement Framework conferences and an analysis of existing perceptual survey tools being used through-out Saskatchewan and other Canadian jurisdictions.
Engaging students, parents, school staff, and community in planning and putting improvement efforts into action can be a meaningful part of the school improvement process. The TTFM perceptual survey will canvass a balanced range of issues, so that schools can gain feedback about most facets of their operation – not just those issues that happen to be topical, or related to a particular group’s issue of the day. At the most practical level, perceptual data may highlight some aspect of schooling that teachers were not aware of, although it is more likely to validate per-ceptions that teachers have already formed. It will help a school plot student and teacher opinion over time by comparing sample findings with those collected in subsequent years.

Grade 7 (CVAC) Basketball Season Kicking Off
Grade 7 students interested in playing in the PSSD/CVAC Junior basketball league this winter should now sign up on the extracurricular bulletin board by the main floor workroom. This league is open to students in our school division in Grades 7-9. WCMS will be entering the B league this season as our teams will be comprised of Grade 7 students. The season will run from mid-November to mid-February. Information on practice and game times will be posted on the school website as soon as the schedule is finalized. Look for practices to begin the week of No-vember 12. Mr. Tebay will be coaching the boys’ team and Mrs. Sawatzky (community coach) will be coaching the girls’ team.

Drama Club Parts have been cast for our performance, with high expectations for the final produc-tion. Because of the size of the club membership, all roles have been double cast. Dates of performance will be formally announced in December. Mr. Abbott reminds all parents that their help and attendance at meetings is always welcome.
Music Club
Starting October 30, the music club is starting a unit on boomwhackers. This promises to be a fun unit for all. Music club is always open to new participants. Mr. Abbott is looking forward to sharing some performances at upcoming assemblies.
Intramurals
Grade 6/7 Intramurals will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:58-1:20. A
game is set for a period of 3 weeks and then changed. For example, indoor soccer will
be played for 3 weeks, until all teams have had a chance to play each other. The
schedule is posted in each classroom and games should be announced as part of daily
announcements.
Points: Players who show up to participate are awarded 1 point for their team. Winning teams will be awarded 5 Bonus points. Games ending in a tie will result in each team getting 3 points.
Expectations: Players will only be allowed to join until 1:05. Only people participating will be allowed in the gym. No students are to enter the gym until a teacher is present. Have fun and enjoy earning points for your team.
Special Education
Organization has been a topic of discussion in our mini-workshops with classes. Some
tips and tricks include:
A zipper binder
Tabs
No loose pages: one touch rule (goes right where it belongs)
Stickies to mark pages
A homework folder (a pocket duotang) One side: To Do, Other side: Done. Student
puts homework into the one pocket (To Do), when done, moves it over to the other
pocket (Done). Once in class it gets opened immediately to hand in assignments to
the proper teacher.
Use of technology: use ipad or iphone to email notes and assignments or create a
checklist of things to bring
A planner: student records homework assignments in it.
Paper clips: to mark pages
Consistent binder checks and organization times (set a routine at home)
Always place school stuff by the door or write yourself a note on a sticky and place
it where you’ll see it.
Note to parents of Autistic students: If you are interested in attending a workshop
in December about strategies for autistic children, please contact linda.balon-
[email protected] or call the school at 306-683-3000.
