Norton Healthcare has provided compassionate, highly-skilled, innovative care to adult and pediatric patients and their families for well over a century.

MARY LOUISE SUTTON NORTON DONATED HER HOME TO BE USED TOWARDS THE CREATION OF A NEW LOUISVILLE HOSPITAL. THE JOHN N. NORTON MEMORIAL INFIRMARY OPENED IN 1886 AND WAS NAMED TO HONOR MARY’S HUSBAND.

CHILDREN’S FREE HOSPITAL (NOW CALLED NORTON CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL) OFFICIALLY OPENED IN LOUISVILLE AND BECAME THE 10TH CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL IN THE UNITED STATES.

BY THIS YEAR, NORTON CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL HAD OPENED THE REGION’S FIRST AND ONLY BURN UNIT EXCLUSIVELY FOR CHILDREN, AND STARTED KENTUCKY’S FIRST POISON CONTROL CENTER.

AT A TIME WHEN IT WAS UNPRECEDENTED FOR A PEDIATRIC AND GENERAL HOSPITAL TO MERGE, NORTON MEMORIAL INFIRMARY MERGES WITH THE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL.

STORIES OF LIFE

In 1986, Robbie Cardin—known then as “Baby Calvin” for the family’s privacy—became Norton Children’s Hospital’s and Kentucky’s first heart transplant patient, as well as the second successful neonatal heart transplant in the country. Robbie was diagnosed with a life-threatening condition just two days after his birth and immediately had open-heart surgery in hopes of correcting the congenital heart defect. “After the surgery, the doctors came in and said they needed to talk to us,” Robbie’s mother, Patricia Cardin, said. “They told us Robbie needed a heart transplant.”

Fortunately, he waited only 21 days for a donor. “I remember it so vividly,” Cardin said. “Our nurse had told us that she had the next few days off. She said, ‘The only reason you’ll see me in this unit is if we have a heart for Robbie.’ Just two days later I looked up, and there she was. We made eye contact but said no words. Shortly after, we got the call.” That nurse, Mary Lynne Shackelford, still works at Norton Children’s Hospital today.

“I knew that somebody had to die for my child to live. You try to put it out of your mind, but you know it was a baby and someone else’s child,” Cardin said. “Robbie asked me, ‘Where did I get my heart?’ So I told him about the little boy,” Cardin said. “I said, ‘From the very beginning you are extremely special because of this. You aren’t just living for you—you’re living for him too.’”

Robbie grew to be a typical 9-year-old boy. He was fearless, all the way up until the end. “The morning that we lost Robbie, he woke up and said he felt ‘blah,’” Cardin said. That day, he told his teacher he didn’t feel well and that he would not be back. “The teacher told us that somehow he knew,” Cardin said. “He woke up sick that night, and we rushed him to the hospital.” Robbie’s body was rejecting the heart, a risk that comes with any organ transplant. At the hospital he looked up at his mother and said, “Mommy, I love you. I love you so much.”

“I told him I loved him too and about that time he fell onto my chest,” she said. They tried for hours to save Robbie, but he didn’t pull through. “Everyone was devastated,” Cardin said. “His surgeon even flew in to his funeral service and gave his eulogy.”

Robbie’s family was invited to the hospital’s 125th birthday celebration in January 2017. Cardin was touched by how many people remembered her special little boy. “If we didn’t have the people here, there would have been no Robbie,” she said. “The staff did everything they could to give Robbie a great life while he was with us. Once you’ve had a kid here, you’ve got Norton Children’s for life.”

If you were to meet Ashok Raj, M.D., on the street, you would likely encounter a quiet and soft-spoken man. But when you get him around his patients, it’s a very different story. “Dr. Raj is awesome,” said Matthew Walker, 14, who was diagnosed with leukemia at age 12 and received treatment at Norton Children’s Cancer Institute (NCCI). “He looks so serious, but he’s really, really funny. He always is cracking jokes.”

Dr. Raj is the interim director of hematology/oncology/stem cell transplant at Norton Children’s Cancer Institute and University of Louisville. He cares for kids with a wide range of cancers and blood disorders. “Treatments have come so far since I started working in this field more than 20 years ago,” Dr. Raj said. “We’re saving more lives than ever before.”

But even with the advancements in medicine, cancer’s physical and emotional effects can be devastating. That’s why Dr. Raj is always equipped with his years of expertise—and his humor. “No family wants to be in this situation, so in addition to providing treatment, I want to bring smiles to patients’ faces whenever I can,” he said.

“There’s the old adage that ‘laughter is the best medicine,’ which has some truth to it.”

Matthew and his family recently reunited with Dr. Raj and hundreds of other families, doctors and nurses at a Norton Children’s Cancer Institute event at the Louisville Zoo to celebrate survivors and advancements in care. While there was lots of laughter, Dr. Raj delivered a very serious message. “We want to see more happy stories, but we still have much work to do,” he said. “The fact is dozens of kids are diagnosed with cancer and blood disorders every day, and we need to continue to fight and raise awareness.”

Matthew is now in remission. He and his parents are very complimentary of the care they’ve received at Norton Children’s. “Thumbs- up incredible,” said Dion Walker, Matthew’s dad. “Dr. Raj and the entire staff have become like family. They’ve been with us every step of the way.”

And that certainly gives Dr. Raj something to smile about.

Every day for 20 years, Susan Smith endured pain that started after a disc ruptured in her back when she was 19 years old. When she first injured her back, she had surgery that she knew wasn’t going to be a long-term solution. “It was the best they could do since I was so young,” Smith said. “They told me I would have trouble later in life.”

Over time, her vertebrae became unstable— a condition called degenerative spondylolisthesis. She powered through the back and leg pain, until it was too much. “At times I couldn’t walk or even get up and down,” Smith said. “It finally got bad enough where I really couldn’t function, and that is when I decided to see Dr. Gum.”

Jeffrey Gum, M.D., an orthopedic spine surgeon with Norton Leatherman Spine Center, performed a spinal fusion that helped Smith get her life back. One week after Dr. Gum’s procedure, Smith went to her son’s baseball tournament. Two weeks later, she returned to work full-time.

“I remember her coming to her 30-day post-op appointment in high heels—and that is not the norm,” Dr. Gum said.

Recovery from spinal fusion surgery typically takes two to three months, but Dr. Gum was able to perform the fusion with a smaller incision than normal and the three-hour operation was faster than a typical surgery of this kind. Smith’s great fortitude also played a large role.

“I pushed myself with caution, and Dr. Gum’s workout regimen helped me along the way,” said Smith. “Before the surgery, I wasn’t able to be active, I couldn’t exercise or play in the yard with my kids. I was a watch-from-the-sidelines mom.”

Smith is now happier, healthier and setting an example for her children. “If you want to do it, you can,” Smith said. “Here’s proof—I’m in better shape now than when I was a teenager.”

Early in his career, Dr. Kenton Leatherman—known as the father of modern spine surgery—cared for many patients suffering from the effects of tuberculosis and polio, both of which caused severe spinal deformities. Upon his return from World War II, he organized the region’s first scoliosis clinic. The Scoliosis and Spine Treatment Center evolved into Norton Leatherman Spine Center, and Dr. Leatherman went on to establish the Children’s Hospital Department of Orthopedics.

On June 8, 2017, 13-year old Mason Christensen was honored at the eighth annual Bourbon & Bowties, an event that raises funds for Norton Children’s Hospital. Doctors diagnosed Mason with Type 1 diabetes in 2013 when he was just nine years old, the exact age his father, Tony, received the same diagnosis.

While Mason appears completely healthy, his body is continually fighting to maintain blood sugar balance. Because of the disease, Mason must regularly monitor his blood sugar levels, even during the night which often interrupts his sleep. This vigilance helps him avoid dangerous blood sugar lows and highs that can damage his organs.

Mason is a student at North Oldham Middle School in Goshen, Kentucky, and an avid sports enthusiast. He plays basketball and baseball and

enjoys snow skiing, fishing and scuba diving, despite being diabetic. Mason learned how to manage his disease with the support from caregivers at the Wendy Novak Diabetes Center, a collaboration between Norton Children’s Hospital and the University of Louisville. He also has the benefit of learning from his father’s personal experiences with diabetes.

The Christensen family advocates for additional care and research so other children with diabetes can stay active on the playing field and live healthy lives. In 2016 they established the Christensen Family Diabetes Sports Medicine Program at Norton Children’s Hospital to provide individualized monitoring and education for children with Type 1 diabetes, both on and off the playing field, and to conduct research into the management of diabetes in young athletes.

STORIES OF LIFE

Dawne Gee, WAVE 3 News anchor and beloved local philanthropic supporter, was preparing for a busy Thanksgiving week last year. Little did she know her life would hang in the balance as she suffered a stroke on live TV. “The 7:30 newscast started and I remember tossing to a weather segment and feeling like I had to sit down while I was off camera,” she said. “I could hear Kevin [Harned] doing his weather forecast and preparing to send it back to me, but by then I was sitting on the floor and wasn’t sure how I would get back up.”

With all her might, Gee was able to pull herself up to a standing position as the camera turned back to her. She tried to speak, but she had no control. “From there, I don’t remember anything until I woke up in the emergency room,” she said.

Gee was rushed to Norton Neuroscience Institute where a team of physicians, nurses and medical personnel quickly assessed her condition. Within minutes they had determined she was suffering a stroke and part of her brain was being deprived of oxygen-rich blood.

“My children were crying and I couldn’t hug them; my mother was crying and I couldn’t comfort her,”

Gee said. She recalled the emergency department physician coming in to speak to her family. “He was telling them that ‘your mother’s window is closing’—referring to the drug treatment,” she said.

The drug treatment was tissue plasminogen activator (tPA). Within an hour after the tPA was started intravenously, Gee was able to lift her head. Then wiggle her finger. Then lift her arm. She was on the road to recovery, but the road wouldn’t end without significant challenges.

“The depression I felt was real during my recovery,” Gee said. “It felt like winter clothing that I could not shed. I wrapped myself in it.” She credits the ICU staff for helping her rebound. “They do miraculous things,” she said, referring to her ICU team. “They gave me exactly what I needed in the moment, whether that be encouragement or a stern talking to in order to get me out of my self-pity party.”

Gee had to learn to walk again, at first only a few steps at a time. “But I knew that three steps would lead to 30; and 30 steps would lead to 300 and that 300 would eventually get me back home.”

STORIES OF LIFE

Megan Thomas and her husband, Alex, were filled with so much joy the day they learned they were expecting identical twin boys. They decorated their nursery with matching cribs with “Noah” and “Liam” hung above. But the journey of their lifetimes was turned upside down when they learned of complications with the pregnancy. An issue with the placenta, called twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), meant their sons’ lives were at risk.

“With TTTS, one twin gets all of the nutrients and the other is basically starved,” Megan said. “An ultrasound showed Noah had a large amount of fluid in his sac, and Liam didn’t have a drop.”

Noah was showing signs of heart failure, and Liam was extremely sick. The only way to give the boys a chance was to conduct an emergency cesarean section. Noah and Liam were delivered 15 weeks early—each weighing a little more than one pound. At Norton Children’s Hospital neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), the goal was to keep them stable and oxygenated while trying to recreate the womb as much as possible. Sadly, Noah lived for only two days as his condition was just too severe for his tiny body to overcome.

“It’s hard to think about losing Noah, but we are still grateful, because while we only had two days with Noah, that’s more than what a lot of people get to have,” Alex said.

“I don’t think Liam would still be here if it weren’t for this hospital,” Megan said during a recent visit to Norton Children’s Hospital. She was there to see Maggie Flowers, a NICU nurse with whom the Thomas family has developed a special bond.

“She was Noah’s nurse the day he passed away, so she was with us on our darkest day,” Megan said. “She is an amazing nurse, and it brought me peace knowing that Noah was loved by her in his final hours.”

The Thomases call Liam their “miracle boy” as he rose above so many challenges during the five months he spent in the NICU. He developed a hole in his bowel when he was one month old, requiring three surgeries to repair. He overcame kidney failure. He had stage 3 retinopathy of prematurity, which will necessitate glasses for the rest of his life. He suffered a fractured femur after developing rickets, which puts one at risk for broken bones from something as simple as changing a diaper. On top of that, he was not able to breathe on his own for about four months.

“There were several times that doctors didn’t think he would make it through the night, but he always did,” Megan said as she fought back tears. “Liam would not be here if it wasn’t for the knowledge and perseverance of those doctors. We spent all day, every day in the NICU for five months. The doctors and nurses became our family. They cried with us on the hard days and celebrated with us on the good days.”

Not a day goes by that the Thomases don’t think of Noah, but they’ve chosen to channel their grief into gratitude for their miracle boy, who is now at home and healthy. “Just knowing that so many times we almost lost Liam, I’m always reminded to have gratitude and to appreciate what really matters in life,” Megan said.

DEAR FRIENDS OF THE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL FOUNDATION AND NORTON HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION:

On behalf of the thousands of patients cared for by Norton Healthcare each year, thank you for supporting the Children’s Hospital Foundation and Norton Healthcare Foundation.

Norton Healthcare’s two philanthropic foundations raise funds to support care and services provided to children and adults at Norton Healthcare’s five hospitals and numerous outpatient facilities. The foundations’ fundraising efforts support programs, equipment and facilities, research and education to ensure high-quality care is always available and accessible to our community.

As the region’s only full-service, free-standing hospital designed “Just for Kids,” Norton Children’s Hospital—along with its sister facilities, Norton Women’s & Children’s Hospital and Norton Children’s Medical Center— help nearly 185,000 children from throughout Kentucky and Southern Indiana each year. The Norton Healthcare Foundation raises funds to expand the community’s access to high-quality care and services. Thanks to donations from the community in 2017, the foundations raised more than $19 million.

Your support means Norton Healthcare can continue to provide quality, compassionate health care and help our community members live stronger, healthier lives. Thank you!
