Christina A. WilburInstructor & AuthorLamar University
Christina Wilbur might be a Millennial but despite heryouth, she certainly has an affinity for history, writing, andteaching. A look at her Vita confirms that she is wellrespected in all those roles. Christina is a teacher at both Lamar University and at LamarState CollegePort Arthur. At Lamar University, sheactually teaches in both the History and Pedagogydepartments. She has several works published and moreunderway. In Sound Historian (Vol.12, 2009), her article"Lawless Leaders and a County Out of Control: JeffersonCounty and the James Commission, 1960" surely hits closeto home. Christina's presentation to Rotarians will not only examineBeaumont during the infamous James Commission, butfurthermore [the question of] what originally brought anunwanted investigation by the state along with nationalpublicity to Jefferson County. Additionally, the localcitizens' reaction to the investigation will be examined. Sounds interesting? You bet! Be there!

February 3, 2016"Five Things You Probably Don't HaveEnough of in Your Business: Soft Skills
of Management and Leadership"

McDaniell, Hunter & Prince, Inc.by Bobbie Applegate
“Nothing makes sense out of context" began the presentationof Mr. Oxer, an engineer by career. Changes in business andcareer building have been on a rapid scale from 1970 topresent. The structures of power have changed and at thistime we are adding somewhere around 50% more data eachyear to the management of business. The five points that follow are related to how each one of usviews our business and what is happening in the business andemployee world.
The adaptability of decisionmaking and organizingfor change is important. Most decisions take about ayear to be implemented and the business that canmake the change happen and still be ahead of theforecast of the future will be ahead. The capacity topredict important changes that are in the future is ofvalue. Agreement to change in a large group nolonger means consensus of everyone but an agreementto resolve a problem that meets the changinglandscape. The learning speed of employees and employers is ona curving timeline as it develops to the top. This isgood but it makes it very difficult to change a jobstructure that has been developed by someone else.Time is needed to work and train employees tochanging systems.Empathy is necessary to understand the attitudes ofothers. This is a powerful quality in a leader as wellas necessary as groups work toward positive problemsolving situations.Intellectual diversity and tolerance are necessary aspeople work towards understanding others’ thoughtprocesses and how that understanding can be put tothe best use. Different cultures do have differentprocesses of thinking. Be aware of what you see or don’t see. It takesenergy and skills when interviewing prospectiveemployees and listening to what they are or aren’ttelling you, and trying to figure out how they mightfit in your structure. Keep your mind open to newthings.
This shortened* presentation had a lot of value to members.
*Mr. Oxer willingly shared his entire presentation with us. Link to it here and continue to learn more.
