The Knitter’s Life Listgwen w. steege

Every enthusiast needs a “bucket list,” and knitters are no exception! The explosion of online pattern-gathering sites; Flikr feeds detailing

current projects; and the popular website Ravelry inform the vocal group that embraces yarn and needles. The Knitter’s Life List, by fiber fanatic Gwen W. Steege, is a comprehensive guide to everything a knitter wants to know, from yarn types to classic techniques for sweaters, shawls, hats, mittens, bags, and socks and interviews with ground-breaking designers. Festivals, museums, trivia, and a lighthearted attitude make this a must-read for fiber-lovers serious about their art.

Sock Yarn One-Skein Wondersjudith durant

Sock yarn isn’t just for socks anymore! Veteran knitter Judith

Durant has selected 101 original patterns for items that can be created from just a single skein of sock yarn — adorable baby clothes, warm mittens and hats, beautiful scarves, original jewelry, bags, cozies — even a dog sweater and a lampshade! Contributed by yarn shops and designers throughout North America, the patterns are fetching and fun to knit. Some knit up in less than three hours, others make creative use of sock yarn leftovers, and several make heirloom-worthy gifts.

One-Skein Wondersjudith durant

Every knitter’s closet has lonely skeins of orphan yarn that never

seem to get used. Now they have a purpose — 101 purposes, actually. Contributed by yarn-shop owners across the country, these patterns for hats, mittens, scarves, bags, socks, baby sweaters, and much more can each be knit with a single skein of yarn.

2-at-a-Time Socksmelissa morgan-oakes

K nitting one sock is fun and reward-ing, but finishing the second one

can be boring. Now an easy-to-learn new technique enables sock stitchers to work on two socks at one time, finishing both parts of the pair on the same day. Step-by-step photographs illustrate the method of casting on and knitting two socks together on one long circular needle. Best of all, any sock pattern can be adapted to this innovative 2-at-a-time technique, so the fun doesn’t end with the 15 original patterns in this book. Lonely, abandoned single socks are now a thing of the past!

Ever since knitwear designer Melissa Morgan-Oakes revolutionized

the world of sock making with 2-at-a-Time Socks, delighted knitters have clamored for more. Now, Morgan-Oakes demonstrates how to knit two socks at a time while working from the toe up — allowing the knitter to try on the socks as she works, avoid running out of yarn before the feet are complete, and avoid using the kitchener stitch to finish off the toes. The technique can be applied to absolutely any sock pattern, but Morgan-Oakes provides 15 original sock designs for men, women, children, and babies.

Hand dyeing is easy and fun, and the result is gorgeous yarn or

With little more than yarn, dye, and heat (a microwave or traditional oven, a sturdy kettle, or even a Crock-Pot), fiber enthusiasts can satisfy every color craving right in their home kitchens. Detailed advice on color theory and types of dyes sets beginners on the right color path, and eight patterns offer fun projects for using colorful yarns.

78 THEFASHIONDESIGNER'SHANDBOOK

When it comes to wedding dresses, most people believe the more fabric the better.

Here Comes the Bride

W hat does the fashion runway have in common with a walk down the aisle? Answer: the wedding

dress. It’s a tradition to end every fashion collection with the designer’s showstopping wedding dress design. Just when it seemed like every single variation of the white wedding dress had been done, designers take the challenge one step further. Nowadays, we see runway wedding dresses made of paper and white plastic garbage bags. See if you can come up with something new. Ours is made from a white T-shirt and rows and rows of mismatched lace trim. To make our wedding dress, follow the Princess Party Dress instructions but use white cotton jersey fabric. Before attaching the skirt to the bodice, pin and sew 18-inch-long pieces of lace onto the skirt one on top of the other, overlapping each piece of lace about 1⁄8 inch. Sew a small piece of lace to the top of the bodice. Make a veil by cutting a 14-inch circle of white tulle netting, and pinning it to the doll’s hair.

JACKETS 79

JacketsS

weaters may make you feel relaxed and homey, but

jackets make you look and feel dressed and ready to

face the world. Jackets are short or long, boxy or tailored,

hooded, wooly, fuzzy, with a collar or collarless like the

mod jackets that took America by storm when the Beatles

invaded our shores. Don’t be scared—our jacket projects

look sophisticated, but they are really very easy to make.

Little Black DressLevel:

Horrified by the gaudy array of colors worn by women at parties, designer Coco Chanel decided that we would be

more dignified in black and in the 1920s introduced the now famous little black dress. She was right! Today just about every woman in the Western world has at least one—it’s easy to wear, easy to dress up or down depending on the occasion, and above all, easy to look good in. Our version is inspired by the simple black sheath Audrey Hepburn wore in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. But there’s no rule that says it must be black, so make it silver, gold, red, or any color you like.

DRESSES 71

Make It

Make the dress1. With right sides together, place the

two back pieces on top of the front,

matching the shoulders and sides,

and pin in place. Sew shoulder and

side seams 1⁄8 inch in from the edge.

2. Turn right side out and try on the

dummy. Sew on a few tiny pieces of

Velcro or snaps along the center back

opening to close the dress, leaving

1 inch or so open at the bottom.

Cut the fabric1. Copy or

trace the

pattern pieces

on page 127

for the front

and back of

the dress. Cut

out the paper

patterns.

2. Fold the

fabric in half.

Pin the front

pattern piece to the fabric along the

fold through both layers of fabric. Pin

the back pattern piece through both

layers of fabric, but not on the fold.

3. Cut carefully around the pattern

edges, and remove pins and pattern.

You will have one front and two back

pieces.

The Perfect Little Dress

S lim and sophisticated, effortless and elegant, Audrey Hepburn was a lot like the little black dress itself. She

looked great but never like she was trying too hard. One of the most famous little black dresses (right) was designed for her role in the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s by French designer Hubert de Givenchy. The Givenchy creation was the perfect dress, the scene outside Tiffany’s windows was the perfect fashion moment in film, and Audrey, in her role as Holly Golightly, was the perfect new icon: the fashion forward New York City single girl.
