True SAN (Storage Area Network)
» Sharable, Expandable, Fail-Safe storage accessible by all PCs on your network
» With Storage Central you can add the capacity you need to store, share and back up your valuable digital content—-music, games, photos, videos, and office documents—instantly, easily, and securely, all with the simplicity of your C:\ drive. SATA drives sold separately.
» Disks attached through the SC101T appear and function as normal disk drives on multiple PCs.
• You cannot format the drives with your Windows Disk Management software or the DOS “Format” command

SAN versus NAS, what’s the difference?
NAS
(Network-Attached Storage)
SAN
(Storage Area Network)Almost any machine that can connect to the LAN (or is interconnected to the LAN through a WAN) can use NFS, CIFS or HTTP protocol to connect to a NAS and share files.
Only Clients or PC with SCM Utility can access the file system.
A NAS allows greater sharing of information especially between disparate operating systems such as Unix and NT.
File Sharing is operating system dependent and does not exist in many operating systems.
Backups and mirrors are done on files, not blocks, for a savings in bandwidth and time. A Snapshot can be tiny compared to its source volume.
Backups and mirrors require a block by block copy, even if blocks are empty. A mirror machine must be equal to or greater in capacity compared to the source volume.
A SAN addresses data by disk block number and transfers raw disk blocks.

Features
» Mirroring• 2 partitions (on separate drives) are duplicates of each other. • If one drive should fail, the data would still be safe on the other drive.
» Spanning• Combining multiple partitions to appear as a single drive. (Also supported across
multiple SC101T’s.)
» PC disk backups• SmartSync backup software bundled with unit. ($30 value)• Local PC disks are synchronized as needed.
» Gigabit Ethernet connection• Incorporates a Gigabit Ethernet connection to enhance network performance
» Uses SATA drives• Uses SATA drives instead of PATA drives to enhance network performance
5.© 1996-2006 NETGEAR® . All rights reserved
System Requirements
» At least one Pentium class computer (or equivalent) with the TCP/IP protocol installed on a wired Ethernet adapter and a CD-ROM drive (Gigabit Ethernet connection recommended)
» An Ethernet network with a DHCP Server
» Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4» Windows XP Home Service Pack 1 and 2» Windows XP Pro Service Pack 1 and 2» Windows 2003 Server
» NO Macintosh & Linux support (firmware 1.08)» NO Vista Support (SCM software 2.0.16) (Support Pending)
» At least 1 Hard Drive (sold separately)• SATA (Serial ATA) • 1” height, 3.5” wide
6.© 1996-2006 NETGEAR® . All rights reserved
SC101T Security methods
» Storage Central Management (SCM) Utility• Requires to create & delete drive partition• Requires to attach & detach drive partition• Requires to modify partition
» Partition sharing• Allows multiple & simultaneous access to the SC101T partition• Unshared partition will only be accessible by 1 user at a time
» NOTE: SC101T does NOT handle user-level file authentication, file encryption, or file access rights.
