Stories about “stone soup” have been seen around the world for years and have appeared in many versions with differing settings and circumstances. In some of these, the “traveler” is trying to

deceive the villagers into feeding him, and the villagers often are lying when they claim to have nothing to give. This version of the story has an honest and positive approach in which the traveler’s goal is to help the villagers learn how to work together during a difficult time! The setting of this classic story also varies. In some cases the story is set in war time or during other hardships, but this version of the story is set during the Great Depression of the 1930s, which was a very difficult time in history. Directions: At home or at your school’s library, visit the websites below and other informative websites you may come across to research the Great Depression. Then, on the lines below, write a short essay summarizing the important events and characteristics of the time period. http://www.americaslibrary.gov/cgi-bin/page.cgi/jb/wwii http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/243118/Great-Depression
