Nineteen of our neighbors have signed on as Block Captains; but, we still need more volunteers to cover Stone Canyon’s remaining neighborhoods. Not only do we depend on info received from our county Sheriff’s office, word of mouth within our community is the most effective means of bringing attention to and sharing information about safety issues. In most cases, law enforcement officers depend on community watchfulness to help solve neighborhood crimes. Last month, we identified two specific incidents which occurred in December--one auto burglary and the other, an auto theft. As a result, one of our residents has provided links to two videos he posted on Youtube, each showing a group of thieves checking out cars (one on Dec 10th, and one instance actually stealing this resident’s hubcaps last May! Our Watch Block Captains began circulating these links to the residents on their streets, many of whom, in turn, are forwarding info on to their own Stone Canyon friends and neighbors. Hopefully, someone in the chain will recognize the culprits and/ or their car (looks like a gold-colored Suburban or GMC). Great news! Nineteen of our neighbors have signed on as Block Captains; but, we still need more volunteers to cover Stone Canyon’s remaining neighborhoods. YARD OF THE MONTH by Joanie Brown and Amelia Dansby

Hopefully, recent rains provided enough moisture for all of us to get our gardens started and prep our lawns for the beginning of our Yard of the Month cycle, which begins this month and runs through October. Our committee members will be out after the 15th of this month to nominate homes, then at the end of the month to vote on the 3 top winners along with 5 recognized for Honorable Mention. Guidelines, and processes for nominating and final voting are as follows (hopefully not too disjointed to understand):• The YOM Committee consists of 12 full-time members and a

few substitutes; divided into 4 teams of 2 members on each team; Stone Canyon is divided into 4 sections (A,B,C,D); each team is assigned one section on a rotational basis, allowing each team to cover all sections at least once during the season.

• Nominating cycle: shortly after middle of each month, each team nominates and submits up to 3 homes from their section, totally up to 12 homes to be considered in committee’s final vote. During final week of the month, each committee member views each nominated home and submits their individual votes for 1st, 2d and 3d place honors, as well as 5 homes to be recognized as Honorable Mention.

• For a home to be nominated, it must meet these requirements: more than the original basic foundation plantings; lawn must be mowed and weed-free, sidewalk edged and clean; no dead plants, shrubs, trees or lawn; beds are edged, weed-free and pruned and flowers deadheaded; bushes must have a height clearance of 6 feet and may not encroach into the sidewalk; hardscaping (i.e. retaining walls, fountains, etc., must be in good condition); and no plastic/silk plants.

• Final Voting: It is up to each Committee member to rate each home using a 10-point system for some basic elements of design such as street appeal, color, balance, etc, as a guide. Once submitted to the Committee Chair, points are added for each home, and those 8 yards receiving the highest points are ranked accordingly.

• Monetary rewards: 1st place/$50; 2nd place/$25; 3rd place/$15. All 3 homes, as well as 5 Honorable Mention homes a sign recognizing them as a Stone Canyon Yard of the Month. We’re looking for 2 new full-time committee members, as well

as 4 substitutes. If you’re interested, please contact either Joanie or Amelia:

Legacy We Leave For Our Children Undoubtedly, as parents, we have thought about the money we

will leave behind for our children. Have we ever thought about the part of our spirits that we want our children to inherit? Granted, our children are unique individuals. But, we can still leave footprints in the sands of time that will continue to connect us with our children, long after we die.

Our children will learn their own life lessons. But, that should not stop us from modeling survival skills to our children that have helped us handle the struggles of life. We can nurture resilient children by talking to them about our core values through sharing photographs, conversations and dining table games. Our children will learn from us, both consciously and sub-consciously, the skills that can help them weather the physical and mental storms of life. The time spent in reflecting on what really matters to us and communicating the same to our children can make our bonds with our children richer and more meaningful.

My parents actively reinforced the value of gratitude in me. Being mindful and expressing thankfulness for every experience has attracted many positive forces in my life. Gratitude is the

legacy that my parents have left for me. Legacy is a priceless gift that we can pass down to the generations that come after us. Legacy unites us with our ancestors, children and grand-children. Legacy is thinking about what qualities our ancestors have blessed us with, that we will continually strive to transmit in our kin.

It is important to ask ourselves some questions. Which qualities do we value: Humor and Power of laughter; Faith and Spirituality; Forgiveness; Pride; Compassion or something else? Do our children know of our values? What effort am I making in leaving a physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually strong legacy for my children? What difference can I make in the lives of my children in April 2012 through daily affirmations and encouragement?

We leave a legacy when we make a positive impact on our children’s souls. This legacy is pure, powerful and long-lasting. Just like wood becomes stronger and harder when immersed in water, our legacy can preserve the resilience of our children.

“ My children are learning things I never imagined they could learn at this

point in their lives. My preschooler can write his name and recite his alphabet

and numbers. I also have a 15-month old who is learning his shapes and

colors. It’s just amazing how much Primrose is teaching my children.”— Jude & Ethan’s Mom, Primrose Parent
