Can you help? I found these photos of soldiers when clearing my parents' house and wondered whether they might be relatives of my dad, Percy John (PJ) Hodges, who as a boy lived at 19 George Street with brothers Fred and Stan (whom lots of Stockton villagers will know well), and parents Esther (nee Baldwin) and Job Hodges. The Roll of Honour in St Michael's lists five Hodges men, three of whom were killed in action. I found a note of the grave details of Percy, who I guess to have been my great uncle and dad named after him. Could these men also be of that generation of the family? If anyone has any clues about the photos, or other information that would help me work out whether the other Hodges on the roll are relatives, please do get in touch. I also found army badges and a button, which are mysteries to me. Dad was in the RAF and Royal Navy in WW2, so not his. There are also Home Guard, Boy Scouts and Life Boys badges. Does anyone remember being in Scouts or Life Boys with dad? (He was born in 1922, to give an idea of likely timing, if they were his.) My Auntie Iris, dad's cousin, is a bit younger but only remembers a man in uniform with a plume coming to the village when she was a child. That implies a fusilier, I think. Does anyone know who he could have been? I'd be very grateful for any clues anyone could give me. I plan to visit to look at the archives some time in the summer, and would be glad to meet anyone who could help. If you use email, mine is [email protected]. Fingers crossed. Fern Hodges, youngest of PJ's three children

GALANOS HOUSE CELEBRATES 50 YEARS Greek born Christos Galanos bequeathed a large sum to The Royal British Legion following his death in 1957. Besides his wishes for his family, he left one third of his fortune to the village of his birth, Vlatzi in Macedonia, one third to build and subsidise an agricultural college in Tanganyika, and one third to the ex-servicemen and women needing care in Britain. Galanos House was built in Long Itchington during 1966/67. On 2nd May 1967 the Duchess of Gloucester officially opened the home. The year 2002 saw the home move to Southam. The ‘new’ Galanos had 60 bedrooms and many of the loyal staff moved and continued to work at the new Galanos. Several of those loyal staff are still with us now, clocking up many years of long and dedicated service. In 2011, the home grew with the addition of Poppy Lodge, which is home to a further 30 people living with dementia and has become infamous since its showing on the Channel 4 documentary ‘Dementiaville.’ Care is given by a dedicated team of qualified nurses and/or care staff. Each resident has a care plan specific to their needs, a named keyworker, and the support of an excellent catering, domestic, laundry, administration and maintenance team. The social lives of the residents continues with a full-time Activity and Residents Co-ordinator, who along with a team of volunteers, provide a programme of activities, outings and entertainment daily. The social interaction of an individual’s former interests play a big part in the day to day life of the Home. Galanos House offers a Day Care facility for people living with dementia to give their regular carers some ‘me time’. With committed and friendly staff, personalised and attentive care the Day Residents enjoy a change of surroundings and a chance to feel at home, secure and comfortable. We also have a respite bed so that people can stay for a break; giving precious time for those people with 24hour caring responsibilities. In 2015 our constant high standards was rewarded by achieving Beacon status the Gold Standard Framework for palliative and end of life care and an Outstanding rating from Care Quality Commission for their inspection. The year was rounded off by Galanos House being award Care Home of the Year from the National Care Awards. So 2017 sees Galanos House celebrating its 50th year but a year of exciting developments. The home will grow with more beds at Poppy Lodge, a dedicated day care centre and a community hub. This year we are looking to the future

whilst celebrating and remembering the past. We have a range of celebrations and activities planned throughout the year including our Golden Summer Ball in May, so please come and join us. STOCKTON PARISH

ANNUAL PARISH MEETING

The Annual Parish Meeting will take place at

7.00pm on Monday 15th May

in the Village Hall

This is an opportunity for any villager to raise any

concerns that they might have about the village.

Dear Stockton News, I would like to request if you are aware of any developments for traffic calming measures at the crossroads heading into Stockton village off the A426. Having lived in the village for just over a year I have witnessed three major incidents at the crossroads and when I go on 'crashmap.com I am alarmed to see this is a notorious junction with fatalities in the past. With two housing developments taking place in close proximity the volume of traffic and therefore accident risk will surely rise. Could you provide any news on traffic lights or a roundabout that will surely protect our residents. Gavin Anderson

Reply from Howard Collerson, Chairman, Parish Council:- The parish council has used every opportunity with each of the recent planning applications for new houses to emphasise to the County Council the number of accidents at the crossroads and the need for some road safety measures but they seem to think that no action is justified nor that the extra cars that will use the crossroads will change these circumstances. When a new county councillor is elected the parish council will take up the matter again.

Wednesday 6 - 7.30pm Stockton Village Hall Leader: Karen Boucher Tel: 814316

On March 29th we had a visit from Louise and her guide dog Rene as part of our work on disability awareness. We were all very interested to find out how someone is matched with a dog. Louise said it’s a bit like a dating agency, finding out about lifestyles, interests and what you expect to be doing during the time you have the dog. A lot more complicated than you think. Rene although interested to be in a new place behaved beautifully and enjoyed meeting the Brownies at the end of the talk. The girls and the Unit made a donation to Guide Dogs to go towards training the next batch of dogs Five Brownies and Brown Owl took part in a sleepover with 4th Southam

Brownies at Napton Village hall, though the Brownies got more sleep than Brown Owl! Tawny Owl came to visit and was put to work in the kitchen helping Brown Owl feed the hungry Brownies. Everyone had a fantastic time and enjoyed all the activities on offer.

12

We finished the term with three Brownies taking their Promise, Lily, Hannah and Georgia. Snowy Owl and Hedgehog were back for this meeting and Snowy was in charge of enrolment. Tawny Owl will be on maternity leave next term so we are relying on parent/grandparent support until Snowy and Hedgehog come home for the summer. We have spaces in our pack for girls aged 7-10 who are interested in joining

Brownies; we meet Wednesday evenings in the village hall 6 – 7.30pm. You can always ring me for more details on 814316, or register at http://

A new hope Do you remember having a day off school for Ascension Day? We went to church first thing in the morning then had the rest of the day as a holiday. The BBC even played a special Ascension Day hymn on the radio before the pips at 8 o’clock. I expect a lot of younger people today won’t even have heard of Ascension Day, let alone understand its significance! It takes place 40 days after Easter (25th May this year). After his resurrection, Jesus appeared several times to his disciples, sharing meals with them, speaking to them about the Kingdom of God and the coming of the Holy Spirit (on Pentecost Sunday). On his final earthly appearance with the disciples, they left Jerusalem and went up the Mount of Olives. There Jesus gave them his last command: to share the good news about him with all the world, to make disciples and to baptise them in his name. He promises that he will be with them always, to the end of time. This command still applies today to all of us who are baptised – it’s our responsibility to tell other people about Jesus. And if we do that, Jesus continues to be with us through his Spirit. Jesus then blessed the disciples and was lifted up into the sky. While the disciples were looking up, two angels appeared and said that one day Jesus would return, in the same way that he had gone. Having taken on our human nature, he was now reunited with God and through that, our relationship with God was restored. This should give each of us a sense of hope and comfort: that Jesus is interceding for us with God; that he will return in triumph to establish his Kingdom and meanwhile, he has sent his Holy Spirit to give us strength. Why not renew that old tradition of celebrating Ascension Day and come along to our special service at 7.30pm in Napton Church on 25th May? God bless, Gillian

WOMENS INSTITUTE Meeting 7.30pm at Village Hall first Monday each Month

President:- Sally 01926 814121 Secretary: Joan 01926 810220

After we sang “Jerusalem” as usual, Sally opened the meeting and she and Joan our Secretary took us through the notices, and the upcoming events and trips, such as the outing to Blenheim Palace, Park, Gardens and Flower Show in June, and the Crewel Embroidery workshop in May. A few of our members had been to Hatton Village Hall to see Lesley Smith as Margaret Thatcher and enjoy an afternoon tea and had been thoroughly entertained. Then it was time for our speaker John Stirling who had come to talk to us about his long career in show business. His first big break was when Enid Blyton chose him to play Noddy in the musical she had written. He went on to be killed in Dixon of Dock Green and then spent a few years in radio working with Patricia Hayes on Raise a Laugh. He worked as producer for Billy Fury for a year, and then high tea at Liberty’s of London with Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise led to six wonderful years working with them. He produced Sunday Night at the Palladium with the Beatles – the show when Paul first played “Yesterday”. His show business career led to the other passion in his life – helping children with special needs through interaction with donkeys. It all came about when Patricia Hayes died during the filming of a play involving donkeys. John and his wife Anne adopted them, and – very creatively – got Challenge Anneka to build stables for the new charity they set up. June Brown volunteered to be Chairman and Judi Dench President. John and Anne have subsequently devoted their lives to raising money to enable this heart-warming work to continue. Well done to them! Many members contributed by buying cuddly toy donkeys which are provided to the charity free of charge by June Brown so they can be sold for fund-raising. Stockton WI would also like to say a big THANK YOU to Denis Stevens, the husband of one of our members, who, yet again, has stocked the planter in front of the village hall with beautiful flowers. Thank you Denis! Our next meeting will be Monday 8th May, 7.30pm in the Village Hall, when we will discuss and vote on the resolutions for this year’s campaigns and also have a talk on Reiki massage. Anyone interested in becoming a member is welcome. Please just come along on the night a few minutes early, or call our Secretary Joan or President Sally on the numbers above for more information.

Please note that these are informal notes. For a formal record refer to the approved minutes on the parish council website or noticeboard. April Kings House Planning Application - Three senior staff from the Wigley Group attended the meeting to give a presentation and answer questions about the future of Kings House. Subject to receiving planning permission they will purchase Kings House to become their new headquarters. The room layout of the main house will generally remain as it is at present but the use of the rooms will change. The stable block will also retain the existing outward appearance and the wooden barn will be demolished and replaced with a new building for the storage of gardening equipment, etc. There will be parking provision for 29 vehicles and the existing access off Napton Road will be moved slightly and widened to provide the main vehicle access for staff. The drive access onto the A426 will be for the use of visitors. The parish council pointed out the dangerous nature of the crossroads and the speed of traffic on the A426, but generally welcomed and supported the application because it preserved the architectural and decorative features of the main building and might in future provide job opportunities. Wigley hope to move in to the building by Christmas. Village Facilities - The parish council are grateful to Gary Farmer for stepping in a taking on the village mowing whilst Dave Stanley is unable to do the work. The parish council would also like to thank Dorne Jones and her helpers for providing and erecting some nets on the goalposts on the playing field. Stratford Council are looking in to the parish councils request to erect a dog waste bin on Station Road and they will also be asked to replace the dog fouling signs around the village that are becoming faded. The rubbish that has been flytipped in the garages off St. Michaels Crescent has been drawn to the attention of Orbit Housing. Cemex are being asked about the times that the lights that have been erected in the new quarry will be operational. Next Meeting - The ANNUAL PARISH MEETING will take place on 15th May starting at 7.00pm (not the usual 7.15 pm). This will be an opportunity for any villager to raise any concerns they have as well as receiving the annual finance report and the chairman’s report. It will be followed by the Annual Meeting of the Parish Council to elect the chair and vice-chair for the next year. Howard Collerson - Chairman

STOCKTON PARISH COUNCIL Meetings held every 3rd Monday in Village Hall 7.15pm.

Southam and Feldon Community Forum March 2017 Meeting Notes

Stockton Parish Council were represented at the latest meeting of Southam and Feldon Community Forum. This took place at Harbury Rugby Club on 15th March 2017 where the following items were raised and discussed:-

County Councillors’ Grant s Fund - A total of £5,000 was awarded by Warwickshire Councillor Appleton and Councillor Stevens . These included awards to the Half Crown Petanque Club Stockton for outdoor floodlighting, Stockton Stepping Stones Pre School for a boundary fence, Napton Village Hall, Southam and District Lions Club, Harbury Village Hall and Long Itchington Cricket Club.

Dog Fouling - Lisa Parkes has been appointed as the local Dog Warden/Animal Welfare Officer. She is presently formulating a plan to address the dog fouling issue. She has put together some kits and resources that can be loaned to Parish Councils who want to address dog fouling problems in their area. The kits will include ‘crib sheets’ with ideas about different ways to address dog fouling in their areas as well as containing things like: Yellow marker spray; disposable poo bags and leaflets; brightly coloured A2 dog-fouling surveillance signs; plus warning letters for culprits caught in the act. There will also be resources for schools. Lisa will continue to patrol throughout the District. Kits can be loaned out to Parish Councils. Lisa is also devising a new Fixed Penalty Notice document so she can issue fines for persistent offenders. Head of Services at SDC Tony Perks is currently exploring whether this authority can be delegated to other officers in Stratford District Council to widen enforcement powers. From a local perspective, Stockton Parish Council has raised the issue of dog fouling on the streets of our village on numerous occasions previously. The Parish Council fully supports Lisa in her attempts to overcome this re-occuring problem.

Police Priorities and Feedback - PC Jamie Cramp reported on

local Police Activity including feedback on Police Priorities over the last three months.

Rural Crime Patrols - 68 Rural Crime Patrols were under taken by the local Police Safer Neighbourhood Team throughout the local community.

Speeding - 47 speeding tickets were issued mainly along the Banbury Road. Anti Social Behaviour - The police dealt with a number of Anti Social Behaviour incidents including arrests for Drink and Drug Driving and using unlicensed and uninsured motor vehicles.

The highlight of April was that we were able to get the new cover on the poly-tunnel on a warm and windfree day. We'd had to cut it during storm Doris to pre-vent the hoops from buckling under the strain of the wind. But the cover had been on for about ten years so it had lasted longer than it should have. Replacing the cover was made much easier thanks to the help of Chris, John and Archie who kept going with the help of a bit of lemon drizzle cake. I've been looking through some old gardening books. It's not long ago when we were all being advised to use many chemicals to destroy pests and diseases. Most of these products have been withdrawn which is no bad thing. If, for example, you get some greenfly on your roses you will soon find ladybirds or lacewings eating them. If we destroyed all the snails what would happen to one of our fa-vourite birds the thrush? There needs to be some kind of balance. JOBS.......Plant out annual bedding towards the end of the month Sow hardy annuals ie larkspur, marigolds Dwarf French beans and runner beans can be sown Cover potato shoots with earthed up soil Plant out cabbage and other brassica plants. Sow more carrots, peas and salad leaves.

03/04/2017 Friend or foe? Over 200 reports of ‘friendly’ fraudster email scam in three days Fraudsters are turning to kindness with new phishing emails which encourage the recipient to open an attachment on the false premise that they could have already fallen victim to scammers. In the past three days, Action Fraud has received 226 reports from email users who have this email. The phishing email is sent from a fraudster who describes themselves a “law-abiding citizen” and has accidentally received the email recipient’s personal details. Attached to the phishing email is a document which the fraudster claims contains the recipient’s personal details. The fraudster suggests that the email recipient’s details may have been made available to scammers and they are contacting them to try to rectify the problem. To do so the recipient must open the document. In reality, the attached document opens the door to malware being downloaded onto the victim’s computer. The malware attempts to obtain sensitive data from victims, such as banking credentials and passwords; this is subsequently used to take money from the victim. In order to protect yourself from malware, having up-to-date virus protection is essential; however it will not always prevent you from becoming infected. Protect yourself • Don’t click on links or open any attachments you receive in unsolicited emails or SMS messages. Remember that fraudsters can ‘spoof’ an email address to make it look like one used by someone you trust. If you are unsure, check the email header to identify the true source of communication. • Do not enable macros in downloads, enabling the macro will allow the malware to be installed onto your device • Always install software updates as soon as they become available. Whether you are updating the operating system or an application, the update will often include fixes for critical security vulnerabilities. • Create regular backups of your important files to an external hard drive, memory stick or online storage provider. It’s important that the device to which you back up isn’t left connected to your computer as any malware infection could spread to that too. • If you think your bank details have been compromised, you should immediately contact your bank.
