Invitation

Welcome to Stockholm 2008

Dear friends and colleagues,

All Swedish surveyors invite you to Sweden and Stockholm to attend the FIG Working Week 14–19 June 2008. We in the Swedish Association of Chartered Surveyors, SLF will do our very best to include Swedish flavour in the technical and social programme.

Summer is the right time to visit Scandinavia. In June the weather is normally very reliable while the most extensive tourist season has not yet started. You have the opportunity to experience Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, during the Working Week. We recommend to you to:• Take a walk in the Old town, its narrow streets and

shopping areas and the Royal Castle.• Visit museums amongst them the Vasa Museum, the

ship from 1628 that sank on its first journey.• Explore unique buildings such as the City Hall and the

Globe Arena.• Take a boat trip to Drottningholm, the home of the

royal family or to the famous archipelago. We have paid special attention to make the social events

memorable such as:• Stockholm city gives a reception in the famous City

Hall.

• Colleagues in the Stockholm region will invite you to their private homes for dinner.

• The FIG Foundation dinner will take place in the Vasa museum.

• The Gala dinner will be organised at the Grand Hotel. This Working Week will be held only in English as the

English language is very common in Sweden thus it is easy to travel around during your visit in Sweden. We highly rec-ommend you to extend your visit to Sweden with a couple of days to meet colleagues either in Kiruna in the North or in Dalarna (Dalecarlia) during a pre- or a post conference tour to experience something special in the chosen part of Sweden. You can:• Enjoy the never setting sun in the northern Sweden. In

the light of the midnight sun you may experience the Kiruna church, the Icebar in Jukkasjärvi or the space technology and satellite station at Esrange.

• Celebrate the Midsummer in Dalarna with traditional dancing round the midsummer pole and other activities. It is an old tradition in Sweden to celebrate the longest night of the year and nowhere is it more traditional than in Dalarna. A special programme for students will be prepared to-

gether with the Swedish students who are very active in FIG.

One of the technical tours will take you to the Head-quarters of the National Land Survey in Gävle outside Stock-holm. The hosting association SLF was founded in 1908 and has today about 1,800 members representing all surveying disciplines. Swedish surveyors are especially focused and advanced in cadastre and land management, geoinformat-ics, real estate management and valuation. SLF has been in charge for several FIG Commissions, recently very actively involved in Commissions 4, 5, 7, 8 and 9.

On behalf of the local organising committee and SLF I kindly invite you and your family to FIG Working Week 2008 “Integrating Generations” in Stockholm.

We will do our utmost to make your visit in Sweden memorable. Welcome to Stockholm!

Prof. Stig EnemarkPresident of the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG)

Dear Colleague,

The FIG Working Week 2008 – Integrating Generations will be held in Stockholm, Sweden in June 2008, the week before Sweden’s most traditional celebration, the “Midsum-mer”. This conference is hosted jointly by the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) and the Swedish Association of Chartered Surveyors (Sveriges Lantmätareförening, SLF), which will at the same time celebrate its 100th Anniversary.

I am happy to announce that the conference venue will be in the very heart of the city at the Stockholm City Confer-ence Centre with all main tourist attractions within a walk-ing distance and linked to the conference hotel. During this time of the year, the summer days in Scandinavia are long and the sunlight lasts more or less around the clock.

For FIG this Working Week is the main event in 2008 and at the same time the mid-term conference for the cur-rent Council. At the General Assembly we will elect new Vice Presidents and Chairs Elect for all Commissions, which will add some special excitement to the meeting in addition to normal decision-making topics.

The theme of the Working Week “Integrating Genera-tions” fits well to the over all theme of the current Council “Building the Capacity”. The technical programme will in-clude all our ten commissions with special focus on land and tenure issues. According to the new conference structure the FIG Working Week 2008 will be a major conference organ-

ised together with a partner organisation. This time we are happy to have UN-Habitat as the partner. Together with UN-Habitat FIG will organise a Seminar on Slum Upgrad-ing and the Importance of Financial Mechanisms. This is an issue placed very high at the global agenda in support of the Millennium Development Goals. This seminar will be a fully integrated part of the technical programme. We are happy to continue the long-term co-operation between FIG and the United Nations especially in Stockholm as Sweden has a long tradition in organising and supporting such inter-national events.

FIG is grateful to the National Land Survey of Sweden (Lantmäteriet) and Swedesurvey who are the main sponsors of this conference also offering a platform for leaders of na-tional cadastre organizations to meet during an FIG event.

I look forward to meeting you in Stockholm.

Integrating generations – call for papersThe theme of the Working Week is “Integrating Generations”, which addresses many of the issues facing surveyors in the next years. These include questions related to the need of getting young people interested in surveying and geomatics, how to keep the professional qualifications up to date, need for capacity building – all issues of great interest for FIG and the organisers. The theme can also be read more closely related to the profession itself: what is the role of modern technology in GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), geoinformatics, laser scanning etc. This fast growing technol-ogy will change the way of our profession.

All ten FIG technical commissions will attend the con-ference and papers are therefore requested to all the follow-ing topics: Professional Standards and Practice; Professional Education; Spatial Information Management; Hydrography; Positioning and Measurement; Engineering Surveys; Cadas-tre & Land Management; Spatial Planning and Develop-ment; Valuation and the Management of Real Estate; and Construction Economics and Management.

As Swedish surveyors are very successful in the fields of real estate management and valuation we are happy to an-nounce that FIG together with UN-Habitat will organise a special seminar in conjunction to the Working Week. This is

also a showcase how Swedish surveyors have a strong interest in assisting surveyors and land related professions in develop-ing countries.

To coincide with the FIG Working Week in Stockholm the FIG History Group will be arranging a day of papers on historical topics probably followed by a day of visits to ap-propriate places of interest.

VenueThe FIG Working Week will be held at the Stockholm City Conference Centre (Norra Latin). The former school Norra Latin, with bright and spacious rooms in unique renaissance surroundings, is centrally located in downtown Stockholm. The beautiful atrium – which is decorated by some of Swe-den’s best-known painters – is the perfect place for confer-ences and exhibitions. The meeting rooms include the Pil-lared Hall, the Auditorium and the Music Hall as well as classrooms that fit perfectly for parallel sessions and work-shops. See www.stoccc.se.

Important dates, fees and accommodationThe conference will be held 14–19 June 2008 just before the Midsummer celebrations. Dates for submission of abstracts and full papers and registration deadlines are as follows:

Most of them date from the 18th and 19th centuries. Visitors to the houses and farmsteads are met by historical interpreters in pe-riod costume. Duration and price: 4 hours, 12 EUR including bus trans-portation, entrance fee and guide.

Joint FIG–UN-Habitat Seminar on Slum Upgrading and the Importance of Financial Mechanisms

Th e prevention of slums, which represent an all too big part of housing globally, is an important part of reaching the Mil-lennium Development Goals. Having no security of tenure and no access to functioning fi nancial mechanisms, one bil-lion people are kept from achieving an acceptable housing standard. Surveyors play a key role in establishing rights, and in linking functioning markets for housing and fi nance.

During two days of the 2008 Working Week special

attention will be paid to this in a series of sessions, jointly organised between FIG and UN-Habitat, in which the pos-sibilities of the surveying world and the fi nancial sector in changing this will be the main focus. What are the pro-poor tools that can be used in formalising informal rights and where have they been used successfully; which innovative fi nancial solutions can be used in liberating capital for hous-ing improvements; what do they require in the form of land administration systems are some of the questions for which we will seek answers during what is aimed to be a dialogue between professionals working within this broad spectrum of activities. You can participate in the preparations and dia-logues by visiting the conference web site.

Pre-conference tour to Kiruna in LaplandIn the most northerly part of Lapland, 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle and some 1,200 kilometres north of Stockholm, Kiruna is surrounded by forests and moors, mighty mountains and thousands of lakes flowing slowly into winding rivers. This is the land of the midnight sun, shining for 100 days without night!

This pre-conference tour offers an opportunity to ex-perience the unique mining and “space” town of Kiruna, its underground iron ore mine, the Esrange Satellite Station, the picturesque Jukkasjärvi village with an old Sami church and ice sculptures from its famous Ice hotel, the Sami culture based on reindeer herding, spectacular mountain scenery and more. You will also get acquainted with the bold plans to move and re-build the entire Kiruna City – in an effort to secure con-tinuous iron ore mining.

You will arrive to Kiruna at about lunch-time on Wednes-day 11 June. A bus will take us directly to the Jukkasjärvi Guesthouse for lunch. The afternoon will be devoted to the Esrange Satellite Station, where the Swedish Space Company will inform about and demonstrate their activities, such as receiving data from earth observation satellites, tracking and controlling satellites, as well as sending rockets and high alti-tude balloons to space. After that we will visit Jukkasjärvi and spend time visiting the old church, the Ice Art Centre and the old village, where you may try the traditional sauna and an extremely short swim in the Torne River. We will have dinner

at the Guesthouse, before going to the hotel. Later that same evening we will catch a view of the never setting midnight sun from the top of Luossavaara Mountain.

On Thursday we will pay a visit to the largest and deepest underground iron ore mine in the world, more than thou-sand meter downwards. The high tech mining methods will be demonstrated and a lunch is served in the underground cantina. Afternoon is dedicated to a visit to the nearby Space Building, where the National Land Survey of Sweden dem-onstrates satellite image production, remote sensing and ad-vanced geographic information technology. We will also have time for a visit to the Sami handicraft centre, Matarakka.

On Friday morning we will travel by bus into the high mountains west of Kiruna. From the village Abisko we will go for a guided short walk in a spectacular natural setting, have a lunch in the field and learn about mountain flora, fauna and culture. In the afternoon the Sami culture will be the main topic, reindeer herding, mythology, handicraft and the tradi-tional Sami jojk music. Dinner with Sami specialities will be served at the hotel.

Saturday morning early from Kiruna to Stockholm Arlan-da Airport. You will be in Stockholm city well before lunch.

Price: Approximately 600 EUR, all inclusive.

Post-conference tour – Experience the Swedish Midsummer in DalarnaJoin us to explore the beautiful province of Dalarna in cen-tral Sweden, the most famous of all Swedish tourist areas. We leave Stockholm by bus Friday (20 June) morning and arrive in time for the Midsummer festivities in Rättvik at Lake Sil-jan. You will see the Swedes in their folk costumes, rowing in church boats, fi ddle orchestra playing traditional songs and, of course, dancing around the maypole. It is an excellent op-portunity to participate in the folk dances and experience the marvellous atmosphere during the magic Midsummer Night when the sun hardly sets. Get to taste a variety of Swedish dishes at a genuine Midsummer smorgasbord.

On Saturday we will continue to explore the scenic landscape surrounding Lake Siljan. Th e sightseeing will start with a visit at the Vasaloppet Museum in Mora, which will give you a glimpse of the spectacular 90 km long distance ski race. At the old-fashioned museum in Våmhus you will watch a very rare handicraft – jewellery made of hair. Th is handicraft with its origin in Våmhus was practised all over Europe and North America. At this museum skilled crafts-men also make high-quality wooden baskets.

In a beautiful mountainous forest area with a view of the country for miles you will get the chance to see bears, wolves and lynxes at the Grönklitt Bear Park. In the afternoon you will taste the unique atmosphere of traditional farm life in a chalet with a lot of cows, goats, sheep and horses in a wood-

grazing area. At the Nusnäs Dala Horse factory you can watch the horses being carved and decorated. Th e painted horses carved of wood have become a famous tourist souve-nir and the symbol of Sweden. In the evening you will have the opportunity to socialize and mingle with your Swedish colleagues at an organized dinner party.

Sunday we depart for Stockholm, on the way we stop to visit the famous copper mine in Falun, we will arrive at Arlanda Airport at approximately 16:00 hrs. Embark on this voyage of discovery where many surprises are awaiting you.

Price: Approximately 400 EUR, all inclusive.
