Be one of two lucky families to win tickets to see: Cinderella the Pantomime at the Theatre Royal, Winchester from 7 Dec 2011 to 2 Jan 2012*

This Christmas, Theatre Royal Winchester plays host to the real royal wedding of the decade - and this time you're all invited!

Cinderella is the classic fairytale story of beautiful maiden meets handsome Prince. But standing in their way is the evil Baroness, eager to ensnare the Prince for one of her own hilariously hideous daughters.Cinders makes a magical transformation for the Prince’s Ball but on the stroke of midnight the dream is shattered and she flees, leaving behind a beautiful glass slipper. Will the true owner of the slipper ever be found or will the ugly stepsisters dig their oversized heels in?

This year promises to be our most lavish and spectacular pantomime yet. With original songs, loads of jokes and plenty of audience participation, the whole family is guaranteed to have a ball!

* Prizes are for the 11.00am or 2.30pm performance on Monday 2nd January

Hampshire Restaurants Help Homeless

Last year, over 500 restaurants participated in the StreetSmart

Campaign, raising £465,000 to help the homeless in 19 cities countrywide. The campaign, launched 14 years ago, has become a valuable and well recognised part of the restaurant landscape. This year, we'd like to invite restaurants to join us as we launch the campaign throughout Hampshire.

We've grown both in terms of money raised and number of restaurants participating, and now over 90 homeless charities benefit from the campaign. So if you run a restaurant, do sign up, and if you simply eat out in them, make sure it supports StreetSmart - what's £1 at the end of a fantastic meal?

The Society of St James is pleased to announce that the first restaurant in the county to sign up to the campaign was The Purefoy Arms. Andres (owner and award winning chef) has experienced the campaign in action in London and was only too pleased to be in a position to support the Hampshire launch.

StreetSmart is simple to run, hassle-free and will cost restaurants nothing. A voluntary £1 is added to each table's bill throughout November and December, with a StreetSmart Card on each table explaining. All of the funds raised in Hampshire will go to the Society of St James, a local homelessness charity. Thanks to Deutsche Bank's support, not one penny of the money raised goes to StreetSmart's administrative, production or promotion costs. Not many charitable campaigns can honestly make this claim but we are proud to say that every penny of every £1 raised in your county will be distributed directly to helping the homeless in Hampshire.

Restaurateurs, sign up online at www.streetsmart.org.uk or call your regional organiser, Dee Russell (Corporate and Community Fundraiser at The Society of St James) on 023 8063 2524

METHOD Beat the eggs and the cream vigorously until they form a nice thick mixture. Sauté the bacon rapidly (until lightly browned). Slice the cheese finely and add to the mixture. If using pastry prepare a tart by putting in a quiche dish, cover with dried or ceramic beans & cook for 10 minutes. Next add the bacon and pour the mixture over. Place in an oven at 180º, cook until the top of the tarte goes a light brown.

An alternative method is to fill each ramequin with a little bacon, pour the mixture over and bake in bain marie, until light brown. In both cases, make sure the cheese is evenly distributed throughout the mixture.

Serve with a salad, walnut oil dressing, slices of apple and walnuts.

DRESSINg 1 tablespoon of walnut oil2 tablespoon of normal oil1 tablespoon of vinegarSalt / PepperA few finely chopped shallots or chives

4 Eggs250g Single cream250gr Epoisse cheese or any other soft type cheese (Camembert style).100g Finely chopped bacon matchstick size

FOR THE PASTRy175g Plain flour, plus extra for dustingSalt Pinch75g Butter, plus extra for greasing(alternatively use ready made pastry)

NOTE If you don’t have any pastry, use 6/8 ramequins (depending on size). A soupspoon of cognac improves the recipe tremendously.

For your dinner parties order your bespoke French cheese tray.

Nurturing and developing young peoples potential through dance, drama and singing.

The morning of the 20th of October heralded great excitement for the children

of Broughton Pre-School as they headed to the Sir Harold Hillier Arboretum at Ampfield for an action-packed day of Autumnal fun and learning. The emphasis of the day was on light and colours in Autumn-time, and the Education Centre at the Arboretum provided the perfect setting for this. The children were fascinated to discover the rich variety of leaf shapes and shades on display around the Arboretum, enthusiastically putting their artistic skills to the test to create seasonal patterns and pictures. There were also animated discussions with the

children on how light changes throughout the year, giving them a basic grasp of the concept of daylight and darkness by relating this to birds and animals with which they are familiar. Judging by their smiles and laughter, it is safe to say that all the children had a hugely enjoyable and unforgettable experience at the Arboretum.

The Pre-School is a charitable organisation and is reliant on fundraising and donations. This event was made possible through the kind generosity of Penyards Estate Agents, for which Broughton Pre-School is extremely grateful.

autumn adventure for Broughton Pre-School

Cakes, Costumes and Conkers! As this half term has

progressed, the whirlwind start to the term seems to

have whipped up a frenzy of things to celebrate and get involved in. Our Macmillan coffee morning was a great success and we raised over £100 for this important charity. Our parents pulled out all the stops and made some beautiful cakes which were shared with over 100 parents, community members and children – if you came to join us, thankyou.

There was an added twist this year though…the BFg, Danny Champion of the World, Willy Wonka, Mr & Mrs Twit and the enormous crocodile were just some of the special guests at our Macmillan coffee morning. Our year 2/3/4 children have been learning about Roald Dahl and the amazing stories he wrote. They celebrated on 30 September with a dress up Dahl day and our children turned into some of his best loved characters. This has got

their literacy off to a flying start and their imagination has run riot with descriptions, made up words and story settings which moves their writing outside the realm of their everyday lives.

Our year 4 children have also been involved in running our annual conker competition. When conkers started appearing on the playground in mid September, we could either have said no, on health and safety grounds or found a way for children to indulge in this traditional game safely. The boys in year 4 decided on the health and safety rules in order to keep everyone safe, wrote these up, led

an assembly on the competition and then marshalled and judged each match. We’re down to the final; george McMaster vs Jack Soper. It’ll certainly be hotly contested! The boys in year 4 have tackled this task with a growing confidence and maturity – something we aspire to instil in all our children. At our recent open days, a few parents, governors and myself started to talk about Christmas and how the school might celebrate it this year. We have big plans!! We are holding another open day on Friday 2 December for any prospective parents or members of the community who would like to come and look around the school. As we will be in the month of December, the school will be fully festive and decorated! We look forward to meeting you.

On September 10/11th, the Upper Test Valley Vintage Club, based in

the Stockbridge area, put on their annual Vintage Working Weekend and Rally for the general public to see how farming and other crafts were done in the 1940s/50s.

There were a large selection of exhibitors from all over the south of England, with tractors, steam engines large and small, crafts, classic cars, lorries and a large collection of barn engines on show.

There were two timber sections, one old and one modern. The old one was driven by a steam engine and the other used a bandsaw, but both did the same job of cutting up trees into planks of various sizes. They also had an Indian encampment producing

bows and arrows and tents. What made the event so enjoyable was that the exhibitors took time out to explain what they were doing or making. Many thanks must go to Mr David Burnfield and family, the farmer who allows the Club to use two or three fields each year to hold the show; he also provides a lot of help in erecting the show beforehand. We would also like to thank all the volunteers who helped to run the show.

It wasn’t all sunshine as there were a few nasty showers over the weekend but the general public still came and we were able to raise £1000 to the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.

Thank you for supporting us again this year.

Dave Watts, Chairman.

Another outing was to Newbury Races in March. 10 students from Woodlands Education Centre, Havant, participated in a Race Experience Day at Newbury Racecourse as a result of a partnership that has been implemented between the British Horseracing Authority and The Prince’s Trust. The aim of the day was to give the students an overview of the racing industry, including the range of jobs and careers that exist within the sport as well as a celebration for successfully completing 1 or 2 years within the XL club

To continue with these activities, the Prince’s Trust needs to raise almost £1 million a week across the UK to continue its vital work. With this is mind, Prince’s Trust volunteers Yinnon Ezra MBE and John Morton are calling for volunteers to join The Prince’s Trust Hampshire and Isle of Wight Development Committee in order to raise funds for the youth charity.

Yinnon said: “Due to high levels of youth unemployment, too many of our young people are not getting the chance to realise their potential. The new Hampshire and Isle of Wight Development Committee is a chance for us to make a difference to the lives of many more young people in the county.”

If you are interested in applying to join the committee, please get in touch. Call Nathalie France, head of funding development at The Prince’s Trust on 020 7543 7339 or e-mail Yinnon Ezra MBE ([email protected]) or John Morton ([email protected]).

The Prince’s Trust helps change young lives here in Hampshire by giving disadvantaged young people the skills and confidence they need to turn their lives around. It works with 13-to 30-year-olds who have struggled at

school, have been in care, are long-term unemployed or have been in trouble with the law, and more than three in four young people helped by The Prince’s Trust move into work or training.

Local organisations including Hampshire County Council have been hugely supportive by providing funding and “help in kind” for the Prince’s Trust in the past. The trust is grateful for the support of Southampton Football Club and Hampshire Fire and Rescue, which delivers The Prince’s Trust’s 12-week personal development course, and is vital to the work of The Prince’s Trust in the county.

Having recently joined forces with youth charity Fairbridge, which has a centre in Southampton, the Trust is now able to help change the lives of more young people here than ever before. Recent activities included 7 young people from Frogmore Community College XL

club enjoying a residential weekend at the Hampshire Mountain Centre in Brecon Beacons at the foot of Pen y van. Amongst the activities they participated in were canoeing, mountain walking, camp craft and outdoor cookery. The group did a whole day’s canoeing on the river Wye and then they climbed to the top of Tumper, where the group enjoyed watching the sunset. The residential element was part of the team building module; the third they’d completed this year.

Hampshire mum

We all at some point in our lives have cursed the ineptitude of telecommunications companies, this time it was my turn. Friday was spent with intermittent internet and crackling phones, and

then, ...nothing.

The Husband drove off in his van on Saturday morning; not in any kind of petulant way, but because it was the only place he could get a signal on his mobile. He had been in conversation with our service provider (ID-10T communications) and was now on hold and had been for some twenty minutes. I could just make out his happy face through the steamed-up windscreen.

Fortunately Stars I and II were at friends, so missed the tirade of abuse and the sight of the mobile being hurled across the room. “Forty minutes on hold then I lost the signal! I can’t cope with this. I’m off to golf … ”

“Ok honey.” It didn’t seem appropriate to add “calm down.”

Saturday afternoon was spent in a contorted position that only Sting could fully appreciate, bent double over the tumble dryer with my head rammed against the window in a, vain as it turned out, attempt to keep the mobile signal.

“Are you in front of your PC now Mrs. Pagan?” enquired the nice man called Malcolm.

“Err, well not exactly.”

“Just need to take you through security and then I’ll transfer you to our technical department - they are a little busier than usual at the moment…”

After fifteen minutes and a feeling of creeping rigor mortis I marvelled at their choice of music: ‘I feel like dancing’ (yes, on someone’s head) by the Nolan Sisters, and oh the sweet irony in the third line of Bonnie Tyler’s ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ –‘we’ll be holding on forever’. After thirty-five minutes, how prophetic was she?

But finally … “Welcome to ID-10T. I’ll just take you through security, then pop you on hold for a moment…”

“No!” And with that, my elbow slipped from the windowsill and I lost the signal. It was at that point I felt a desperate need for the Earl (Grey), so staggered to the kitchen only to discover that Star II had decided to have a go at making strawberry ice cream. It’s amazing how far strawberry purée can travel with the aid of an electric whisk.

Sunday found me at my parents’ house using their landline, which, mercifully, had free calls as part of their internet package. It had

I'D lOVE TO TalK BuT...

been ten minutes with dear Bonnie Tyler when a voice said, “Sorry to keep you Mrs. Pagan. We are unable to open the Open Reach portal because you are a customer of ID-10T(S) so you’ll need to talk to them. Goodbye.”

“But .… but …

I dialled the number, bemused: hadn’t ID-10T bought ID-10T(S) Well, I got through to the ID-10T(S) helpline: “Welcome to. Now I am normally a mild mannered soul, but there comes a point when something snaps, when enough is enough, so, “I just need to take you through security Mrs. Pagan and then pop you on hol…”

“Let me just stop you there. Here’s what’s going to happen . You, please, will open the appointment system for the people who connect the lines and get a technician to call. I’m free 24/7. DO NOT put me on hold with Bonnie Tyler ANY MORE.”

“Oh Mrs. Pagan, I’m so sorry, my system has crashed and I need to put you on hold – just for a minute - so I can refer you to my manager.” As Bonnie sang ‘We’ll be holding on forever’ I was resigned to my fate. Twenty minutes later, a human voice returned and said she would text me through an appointment. Marvellous, or so I thought.

The Husband returned from the 19th hole with good news; he had received a text saying we had no fault on our line. So that would be why we still had no phone either in or out, and no internet then. Fabulous. We phoned the help line again: “Thank you for calling ID10T, all lines are now closed.”

On Monday, I was at a dear chum’s house using her phone, oh yes, and Bonnie was there too. A lovely lady from the sub-continent took me through security and then the various things we could do re plugging in other phones etc etc, all of which we had done to no avail. And then, “The people who connect the lines will call between 1 and 6pm tomorrow.” Eureka!

I waited in… No one came.

Tuesday: just embarking on the school run when, there it was, a 'we connect your telephone lines' van driving up and down our road! In desperation I flagged him down and hurled myself towards his window, “Number eighteen?” I panted, eyes wide.

He looked afraid: “No, number four”. I backed away; he’ll never know how close he was to having a premenopausal woman grab him by the throat.

Wednesday was spent sifting through notes that people had put through the door asking why I hadn’t returned their calls.

Thursday: no Bonnie, instead 'we connect your telephone lines' man turned up! A man, with no desire for Earl Grey and without a sense of humour, but with an uncanny resemblance to Vince Vaughan, said, “Well it’s obvious what’s wrong with that.” He donned a hard hat, goggles and a harness and proceeded to climb up the telegraph pole outside; he was holding on now….

Fifteen minutes later, he said simply, “New cable.”

The Pagans are now able to communicate once again. Well, except the answer machine doesn’t work ……Sandra Pagan

Christmas Exhibition with two Guest artists

The Hampshire Artists’ Co-operative’s Christmas Exhibition opens at 11

am on Saturday 12th November 2011 at the Selborne gallery, The Plestor, Selborne.

During this exhibition the gallery will be featuring two guest artists, painter Anne Lewenhaupt and 3D artist Mike Topham.

Anne says “I love the rhythm of a painting and the accidents and discoveries that can occur. My hopes are that the viewer will get something from my work, some mystery and something new to explore which will resonate beyond the confines of the frame.”

Mike’s wire pictures are based on simple and humorous things in everyday life and are often inspired by a phase, saying or childhood memory. Each picture is individually made in various gauges of copper wire which are positioned and soldered before cleaning and finally painting and mounting.

The gallery will also be taking part in the ‘Christmas in Selborne’ evening on Saturday 3rd December 5 – 9 pm. The High Street will be packed with local attractions and local traders will be supplying festive food and drink and presents to inspire you.

The members of the Co-operative have produced hundreds of new

items large and small including contemporary jewellery, felt-work, sculpture, painting, drawing, pottery, glassware and textiles, with prices starting at £10. gift vouchers may be purchased and exchanged for a piece of artwork of choice.

The Co-operative is a member of the Art Council’s ‘Own Art’ Scheme which is designed to make buying contemporary works of art available to everyone. Customers can borrow up to £2,000, or as little as £100, and pay back the loan in 10 monthly, interest free, instalments. Please ask about the scheme in the gallery where the staff will be happy to answer all your questions.

Why not come along to the Selborne gallery during opening hours, meet the artists and look at the new exciting and original work. During the informal opening launch on Saturday 12th November most of the artists will be in attendance to discuss their work.

The gallery is open from 11am until 5pm from Tuesdays until Sundays each week.

The first Exhibition of Paintings by Nancy Rose Taplin at Courcoux &

Courcoux Contemporary Art, Stockbridge

Nancy Rose Taplin is an exciting new talent who has everything it takes to become a great success in the art world -- a unique concept and great skill as a painter.

The daughter of the renowned driftwood bird sculptor guy Taplin, Nancy's creative journey has been a winding one, with anMA in art history and a second degree in textile design in which she graduated last year. She was then "totally outdressed" by grayson Perry when he awarded her the Texprint Interior Fashion Prize, after which she accompanied her work to exhibitions in goa, Hong Kong, Paris and London.

Her diverse training is reflected in her latest work in this coming show. which will be held during November. The birds which she paints so exquisitely on to old ledgers, cashbooks, etc are then framed and glazed. "My training is reflected in my work and is inspired by subjects as disparate as the First World War and the estuary at the bottom of my road", observes Nancy. "Having inherited my father's hoarding instincts, I collect paper ephemera and find the scuffed patina of used stationery an ideal

surface on which to paint or draw. My recent work captures my encounters with birds and their habitats, merging the hidden histories of old books with the excitement I find in the natural world".

The show is titled "Adventure Lit Their Star" , after the book by Kenneth Allsop, as it brings to Nancy's mind not just the adventures of migratory birds, but also those that she and guy have together in Portugal and at home in Essex looking for birds and their nests and generally "crashing about through either deep mud or undergrowth depending on how Dad's navigation is going!"

Ian Courcoux, the gallery director, remarked "We had ten of Nancy's works in a show last autumn and they all sold on the first day. She is a very special talent and we already have a large number of enquiries for the 30 or so upcoming works."

The exhibition runs from 29 October to 22 November. Tuesday to Friday 10-5, Saturday 11-4.

For further information please contact Ian Courcoux on 01264 810717/[email protected].

with wide, padded shoulder straps that reduces pressure on the neck and shoulder area. Buy a bag with adjustable straps which can be altered as the child grows. • Check your child’s posture after he has put the bag on. If you notice your child leaning forward or slouching, check if the bag is too heavy or if it has been packed incorrectly.• Make sure your child is only carrying the items they need for school that day – remove any unnecessary books and equipment• An increase and more use of permanent child lockers for storing equipment or books that can be left at school.

The long term effects from carrying heavy bags include strains on the neck and shoulder leading to headaches, fatigue and an early development of poor posture along with strain to arms and wrists. Another challenge to children’s health, and one which is specifically an issue for girls, are shoes in the form of high heels and flat pumps. Wearing high heels (anything over 2”) is especially stressful on the joints of the foot because the whole weight of the body is forced into a narrow, pointed area. Emma concludes: “As with most things, moderation is the key here. Wearing the same type of shoe all the time can force your foot into an unnatural position. Flat shoes are usually easier on your feet than heels, but with no shock absorbency and little heel support, there is a risk of developing a painful condition called plantar fasciitis (pain on the soles of you feet) and calcaneal bursitis (pain under your heel). “

The answer is to change your style of shoes regularly and avoid the extremes – don’t wear heels that are too high or shoes that are too flat.”

EEmma Wightman, of the Stockbridge Osteopathic Practice, warns parents

and teachers to think about the effect of heavy school bags on children’s health

For Back Care Awareness week this year (17-23 October), the British Osteopathic Association is calling for parents and teachers to consider the health implications of small bodies carrying heavy school bags. The BOA wants images of children bowed down under the weight of their enormous school bags crammed full of books to become a thing of the past.. Heavy bags can put pressure on the discs between the vertebrae which can cause long term back pain in small and still-developing bodies and children can suffer muscular pain, headaches, tingling and numbness in the arms and legs and even mobility problems.

Osteopath, Emma Wightman from the Stockbridge Osteopathic Practice and a member of the British Osteopathic Association, who has treated some of the damage caused by carrying excessive loads, says: “Children should never carry more than about 15% of their own body weight. Parents can help by packing their children’s rucksacks and making sure that the heavier items are nearer to the child’s back. Heavier items on the outside of the bag tend to throw the child’s centre of gravity out of balance, which leads to bad posture and increases the chances of them straining their back”.

Other suggestions from Emma Wightman include:• A backpack is usually more comfortable than a bag that puts strain on only one shoulder, but even a backpack shouldn’t be overloaded.• When buying a bag, buy a sturdy, well-designed bag

City and Guilds Qualified

very reasonable prices, and courteous friendly service from people you can trust in your homeHere's why one of the Test Valley's most trusted carpet cleaning companies is cleaning local, neighbours carpets for a fraction of the normal cost.

Dear Stockbridge Forum Reader. Value conscious local residents

love a great deal. If you need your carpets cleaned

and are looking for an award-winning company who will arrive on time, will be courteous, respectful and above all trustworthy - then you're invited to take advantage one of the three extraordinary value, high quality, carpet and upholstery cleaning deals we're offering new customers -- because we want to give you the chance to get to know our service and to find out how impressively new, fresh and bright your carpets will look when cleaned and freshened by The Carpet Care People.

UpholsteryWe specialise in cleaning and refreshing three piece suites (at our current offer price of £97). Fabric Master, our special upholstery and cleaning system is safe, gentle and very effective. Fibres are restored to their original beauty and softness - you'll see!

CurtainsOur new curtain cleaning service is carried out in your home, right where they hang. It's a fuss-free way to have your curtains cleaned and refreshed and is often the 'finishing touch' to spring cleaning a room!

Our approach is simple:We are proud to run a celebrated professional carpet and upholstery cleaning business, and we insist on providing you with good old-fashioned service and value.

Call now and find out why our award-winning service is probably the most requested carpet cleaning in the local area. The next thing for you to do is call us on 01962 690 005 - we'll welcome your call, answer your questions and take care of everything for you.

tel: 01962 690 005fReQuentLy asKed Questions: Here's a selection of frequently asked questions, especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say 'carpet' what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don't quibble if the area is a little larger - it's all done on fairness really. 2. do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don't price into the job at these discount prices is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen TVs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitably we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. are there any 'hidden extra costs' The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.

The difference is... we care!

A few days of antibiotics and painkillers, plus plenty of care from the wildlife experts, has put a sparkle back into those pink eyes.

“We put a mirror into her cage so we could keep an eye on her and she loves looking at herself in it,” said Caragh Hunter, senior clinical assistant. “I’m sure she is asking ‘who is the fairest of them all?’ like in the fairy tale so we nicknamed her Snow White.” True albinos are quite rare with only one in 100,000. This means, with a grey squirrel population of around 2.5 million, only 25 are likely to be alive at any time.

As it would not be safe to release Snow White back into the wild she will be staying at the hospital until a sanctuary can be found to take care of her for the rest of her life.

For more information about the work of HART Wildlife Rescue, visit www.hartwildlife.org.ukTel: 01420 562335

MIRROR, mirror on the wall who is the fairest of them all? Clearly

this albino squirrel is quite sure she is now, but it was a different story when she was admitted bruised and battered to HART Wildlife Rescue a few weeks ago.

Sadly, she had been beaten up by a couple of her grey cousins and arrived at the Medstead hospital, near Alton, in a poor condition with blood coming from her nose. It is not unusual for wild animals to attack their own kind for being different or weak and as albinos often don’t see too well they can be vulnerable.
