sophomore year at Harvard; the school districts of Milwaukee

and Newark, where music has been completely restored; the

Baltimore school where the restoration of the music program

completely transformed the school environment. We are proud

to have fostered systemic, sustainable change in American public

schools, and to have given students equitable access not only to the

tools for success but to the joys of music.

We are encouraged by these many accomplishments, but we are

well aware that there are still millions of students in American

public schools who lack access to the benefits of music education.

As we look forward, we do so with invigorated passion for our work.

Moving into our second decade, our programmatic activities may

adapt to an evolving educational environment, but we remain

guided by a single goal, the core of our mission: giving all students

the opportunity to excel in school and in life by participating in a

comprehensive music education program.

Thank you for joining us on this journey. With your ongoing

dedication and loyalty, we recommit ourselves every day to reaching

even greater heights of excellence.

Tom Calderone Paul Cothran Chairman Executive Director

This year the VH1 Save The Music Foundation celebrates an

important milestone—our 10th anniversary. Our efforts began in

1997 with a simple desire to help students at a single New York City

public school save their music program from elimination. Soon we

realized that this was an effort needed nationwide. As we talked

with teachers and principals across the country, the recurring

message we heard was that it was the music students who were

consistently the strongest academically. National research bore

out these same results. Through the experience of learning music

within a comprehensive, sequential curriculum, students develop

cognitive abilities, creative-thinking and problem-solving capacity,

improved math and reading aptitude, and other life-enhancing

skills such as self-discipline, focus, teamwork, and an interest in

staying in school. So our mission was clear: to ensure that young

people have access to the tools and opportunities that will help

them succeed in school and in life.

With the support of members of NAMM: The International Music

Products Association, and partners including cable affiliates,

generous donors, and school districts, the VH1 Save The Music

Foundation took on the daunting task of restoring instrumental

music education in not just one school, in not just one district, but

in any American public school without access to music education.

We set a goal to improve the lives of one million students by the

time the Foundation reached its 10th year.

We are pleased to report that the VH1 Save The Music Foundation

has surpassed that goal. Over the past 10 years, we have donated

nearly $40 million in musical instruments, restoring music

education to more than 1,500 schools nationwide and reaching

more than one million students. The numbers are impressive, but

frankly, more important are the real and compelling stories

from the schools with which we have parterned: the student in

that first class of foundation-grant recipients who is now in her

[nnual Report 2007

The VH1 Save The Music Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring and sustaining instrumental music education in America’s public schools and raising awareness about the importance of music as a part of every child’s complete education.

NATIONAL OVERVIEWWHY THE NEED FOR VH1 SAVE THE MUSIC?A June 2005 Harris Poll revealed strong support among Americans for arts education:

• 86 percent of respondents agreed that an arts education encourages and assists in the improvement of a child’s attitude toward school

• 79 percent agreed that incorporating the arts into education is the first step to rebuilding public education today

Additionally, the 2006 Gallup Poll American Attitudes Toward Music found that:

• 94 percent of Americans believe music is part of a well-rounded education and that schools should offer instrumental music instruction as part of the regular curriculum

• 85 percent believe participating in school music corresponds with better grades and test scores

• 82 percent believe that states should mandate music education to provide all students the opportunity to study music in school

• 80 percent agree that learning a musical instrument helps students do better in other subjects, such as math and science

• 73 percent agree that teenagers who play an instrument are less likely to have discipline problems

[nnual Report 2007{8}

Unfortunately, the attitudes of the poll respondents stand in stark contrast to the curricula that

many children are actually receiving. Despite Americans’ clear support for music education,

budget cuts and shifting educational priorities have placed music programs in danger. This

contradicts a vast body of scientific research showing that children who study a musical

instrument experience increased success in reading and math, improved self-esteem, better

ability to work in teams, improved school attendance, and a greater likelihood of graduating

from high school and attending college. Yet without music programs in public schools, many

American children—whose families may not have the resources to pay for instruments or

private lessons—are forever deprived of these benefits. Simply put, it is essential that music

education be a part of every school’s core curriculum.

Public school districts face tough economic decisions about which programs to fund during a

time of decreased budgets and increased accountability. This climate gives rise to the work of

the VH1 Save The Music Foundation.

HOW THE VH1 SAVE THE MUSIC FOUNDATION WORKSVH1 Save The Music develops long-term, sustainable instrumental music programs that

provide children with equal access to music education regardless of their financial situation.

Through strategic partnerships with school districts, the Foundation provides brand-new

musical instruments to public elementary and middle schools, jump-starting dormant music

programs across the country. The school districts commit to funding certified music teachers’

salaries, providing maintenance and supplies, and scheduling instrumental music classes

during the school day; the Foundation maintains a partnership with the district until

instrumental music is in place in every school.

VH1 Save The Music purchases approximately $30,000 worth of new, high-quality musical

instruments for each grant-recipient school. A school can choose a package of band or string

instruments, a keyboard lab, a guitar lab, or a mariachi program. As part of the Foundation’s

community-based focus, the instruments are purchased through local music retailers and

manufacturers that are members of NAMM: The International Music Products Association.

NAMM affiliates generously provide discounted rates to help further the Foundation’s cause.

Since its establishment in 1997, the Foundation has provided nearly $40 million in new musical

instruments to more than 1,500 public schools in 100 cities, affecting the lives of more than

one million children.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEYThe Foundation’s partnership with the New Brunswick, New Jersey, Public Schools

(NBPS) started with two proactive school board representatives. In February 2005,

board members Patricia Sadowski and Emra Seawood attended the National

School Boards Association Conference, where VH1 Save The Music was conducting

a workshop on the benefits of instrumental music programs. After participating

in the session, Sadowski and Seawood approached Richard Kaplan, the NBPS

Superintendent of Schools, and advocated for music education in New Brunswick,

a city with 50,000 residents and one of the state’s highest poverty rates. In short

time, Kaplan authorized a complete revamping of the NBPS instrumental music

program. After committing to hire a roster of new music teachers, he connected

with the Foundation—and, in turn, with community partner Cablevision. With

the generous support of the Paul Singer Family Foundation, VH1 Save The Music

will bring grants of musical instruments to every elementary school in the city.

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA With the help of media partner Bright House Networks and local music retailers, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation has been working with the Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) since 2000, granting four new music programs every year. By 2007, new musical instruments were in the hands of hundreds of Indianapolis elementary school students. Starting with the 2007–2008 school year, IPS Superintendent Eugene White stepped up the already impressive effort. Determined to transform IPS into a model urban school district by 2010, Dr. White doubled available resources and committed to launching eight new instrumental music programs per year. Within the span of three years, every child in the entire system will have the opportunity to play a musical instrument.

LETCHER COUNTY, KENTUCKYIn the spring of 2005, Sam Quillen and Anna Craft, School Board Members for the Letcher County Public Schools in eastern Kentucky, approached the VH1 Save The Music booth at the National School Boards Association Conference. They wanted to know if the Foundation could help restore their community’s instrumental music programs: In the past, students in the mountainous region had enjoyed a robust music curriculum, but recent budget crises had all but eliminated it.

The Foundation eagerly undertook the rebuild and was met with energetic support from the school board, school administration, teachers, students, and parents. Their community spirit reaped immediate dividends. Within the new music program’s very first year, 10 Letcher County students were selected for the Kentucky Music Educators Association District 9 Honors Band. Building off this impressive momentum, the Foundation aims to complete the Letcher County restoration in the 2008–2009 school year.

“IT HAS ALLOWED A HANDS-ON, MORE TACTILE EXPERIENCE, AND GIVES A SPACE FOR CREATIVITY TO TAKE PLACE. AS A LOW SOCIOECONOMIC AREA, WE HAVE MANY STUDENTS WHO HAVE LITTLE ACCESS TO KEYBOARDS EXCEPT THROUGH THIS PROGRAM.”

HOUSTON, TEXASRoderick Littleton attended Wesley Elementary School in Houston, where

the VH1 Save The Music Foundation provided a grant of band instruments in

2000. Ever since, Roderick has played trombone and won a series of awards

for his accomplished playing. He now attends a local Houston high school for

students interested in engineering professions, and in September 2007 he

performed in the VH1 Save The Music Foundation 10th Anniversary Gala

Orchestra. The Foundation extends its warmest congratulations to Roderick for

his impressive accomplishments.

Roderick is just one of the many students who has felt the impact of music

education in Houston. With the steadfast support of Comcast, Yamaha, and Music

& Arts Center, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation has granted two new music

programs every year since 2000 to Houston-area schools. During the 2006

school year, the Houston Independent School District significantly enhanced its

commitment to music education, creating a strategic arts plan that will bring

instrumental music classes to every child in the system. Starting with the 2007–

2008 school year, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation will grant new instruments

to 15 schools each year until every student is served.

HAWAIIAfter attending an advocacy presentation given by the VH1 Save The Music

Foundation at the National School Boards Association Annual Conference in the

spring of 2005, school board members from the Hawaii Public Schools spoke

with the Foundation in hopes of revitalizing instrumental music in the district’s

elementary and middle schools. Since that meeting, in partnership with media

partner Oceanic Time Warner Cable, the Foundation has provided two grants per

year to the Hawaii Public Schools—and music is once again filling the halls of the

Hawaiian Islands’ public schools.

MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE The VH1 Save The Music Foundation began working with the Memphis City

Schools in 1999 with the help of Comcast, Amro Music Store, and Soundtree.

After seven years of successful work, the Foundation and Memphis school leaders

discussed taking the partnership to the next level. So began a new strategic

rebuild that increased the already significant number of music programs restored

each year. The strategy is clearly working. On an annual basis, the VH1 Save The

Music Foundation honors an outstanding superintendent, an administrator who

has ensured that all students in his or her district have access to instrumental

music education. Also, every year, the music-education community selects the

top 100 Best Communities for Music Education in America. The Memphis City

Schools swept both titles in 2007!

TULSA, OKLAHOMASince 2001, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation and media partner Cox

Oklahoma, working with Saied Music, have restored 23 instrumental music

programs in the Tulsa Public Schools (TPS). The flexibility of the Foundation

grants afforded TPS teachers the opportunity to implement a variety of band,

string, keyboard, and guitar programs in their elementary and middle schools—

and has opened up a whole new world for their students. Thanks to the

determination of the TPS administration, this steady restoration of instrumental

music programs is nearly complete. With all high schools boasting strong music

programs and only one middle school and sixteen elementary schools left to

restore, VH1 Save The Music plans to complete the return of music to Tulsa in the

next four years.

[nnual Report 2007

To make a difference in the life of a single child, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation must work at the local, state, and national level. This requires energetic advocacy strategies: working with community, government, and school-district decision makers from the outset of a project, then seeing it through to completion.

LOCAL EFFORTSAdvocacy efforts are only effective if the result of the work is sustainable. The

local efforts of the VH1 Save The Music Foundation focus on ensuring that

comprehensive music education will be available to all children for the long term.

The process begins with research: Foundation representatives find not only

the school districts that do not have instrumental music available, but also the

districts where school administrators are ready to support new music programs.

During an initial meeting, school administrators outline their needs and learn

about the successes of districts with similar financial circumstances. The

Foundation then offers at least $30,000 worth of new instruments to every

school that does not have an instrumental music program; in turn, the district

commits to providing qualified music instructors and working music classes into

its schools’ daily schedules.

{15}

Vh1 Save }e Music Foundation

Honors. In addition to providing workshops on the benefits of music education

at conferences for the AASA, NSBA, and the Association for Supervision and

Curriculum Development, the Foundation honors—in front of thousands of school

board members and administrators from around the country—those school-

district officials who have been supportive of music education.

In 2007, the Clark County Board of School Trustees and Dr. Carol Johnson,

Superintendent of the Memphis Public Schools, were recognized as the most

distinguished school board and administrator in support of music education.

In a special ceremony, Grammy Award–winning artist Macy Gray joined the

Foundation to help present Dr. Johnson with her award.

CAPITOL HILL

The VH1 Save The Music Foundation and NAMM: The International Music

Products Association cosponsored an event for federal legislators in the Mansfield

Room on Capitol Hill. Important decision makers were presented with a clear

case for music’s essential role in the public schools, then were inspired through

firsthand accounts from Grammy Award–winning artist Mya.

Together, the Foundation and the administrators develop a multiyear plan to

restore instrumental music to every school in the district. Instruments are

ordered from the local music retailer to begin the new program. Local community

organizations, government representatives, and school-district officials are

mobilized to attend celebratory events, often launched in partnership with area

businesses and arts organizations. Local foundations and donors offer financial

support, the local cable system airs public-service announcements about the

importance of music education, and the press follows the program closely,

detailing its progress and effects on the community.

Because community members are far more likely to feel invested in programs

that they have helped to build, the Foundation seeks a broad range of local

involvement. This multipronged outreach is what makes the programs sustainable.

Following this model, to date the VH1 Save The Music Foundation has restored

music programs in 1,500 schools in 100 communities.

NATIONAL EFFORTSThe conversations that take place while advocating in local communities prove

most effective when decision makers, community members, stakeholders, and

funders are already familiar with the importance of music education. The VH1

Save The Music Foundation employs a number of strategies on a national scale

to lay the groundwork for successful local advocacy.

School Conferences. The VH1 Save The Music Foundation targets school-

leader conferences to spread the word about the vital need for music education.

Each year, school administrators gather to share information that will enable

them to make important decisions about the curricula in their schools. Both

the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) and the National

School Boards Association (NSBA) have granted the Foundation and other

music-education advocates a section of their convention spaces—special

pavilions devoted to restoring music programs. Since 2005, the VH1 Save The

Music Foundation has been joined by instrument manufacturers, retailers,

and the Supportmusic.com coalition in the music pavilions. As our Community

Profiles attest, many of our school-district partnerships begin when attentive

school board members and school leaders hear about the importance of music

education at a conference.

A PRINCIPAL’S GUIDEIn the summer of 2006, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation program staff authored

an innovative principal’s guide, Building Your Instrumental Music Program. A

number of experts in the field of music education reviewed and contributed to

the publication, which was developed to provide an overview of how to build and

sustain a vibrant music program. It is available to the public on the Foundation’s

website at www.vh1savethemusic.com and is sent to the music teachers and

principals of all VH1 Save The Music grant-recipient schools.

PRINCIPALS’ WORKSHOPSNEW YORK CITY

On September 21, 2006, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation hosted its first

grant-recipient principals’ workshop in New York City. Executive Director Paul

Cothran and Director of Programs and Policy Laurie Lock guided more than 70

attendees from the New York City Public Schools through the Foundation’s grant

requirements and introduced the new publication Building Your Instrumental

Music Program. Attendees also had the opportunity to hear about successfully

supporting and growing an instrumental music program from three principals

of past grant-recipient schools. During the post-workshop reception, attendees

connected with other grant recipients, asked Foundation staff questions, and met

with the manufacturers and retailers that provide school instruments. Building on

the workshop’s success, the Foundation plans to hold similar events in other school

districts throughout the United States.

CINCINNATI, OHIO

In March, as the Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) faced news of large budget cuts for

the upcoming school year, Program Manager Rob Davidson—along with CPS student

musicians, teachers, and administrators—gave a presentation to all principals to

emphasize the fundamental role of music education in their schools. As a result of

this act of advocacy, two principals reversed their decisions to cut instrumental

music, while many others assured their commitment to keeping music in their schools.

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND

In July, Program Manager Kirsten Brooks traveled to Baltimore to host a workshop for

Baltimore’s public school principals, again underscoring the benefits of instrumental

music education. The session also educated the principals about the Foundation, the

grants and support available to them, and the application procedure.

For 10 years, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation has

operated under the abiding principle that music, as a

galvanizing force in a young person’s life, can do wonders.

It can help a child focus, confront challenges, develop self-

confidence, and even fare better in other classes. But if the

Foundation’s mission were purely academic, it would have

been a lot harder. The fact is that music also moves the

human spirit in ways that can’t necessarily be quantified

in studies and spreadsheets. This is because music, at

its core, brings people together to listen. And because

of this simple truth, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation

is proud not simply for forging partnerships, but for

forging friendships—for uniting families, teachers, and

administrators with progressive corporations, foundations,

small businesses, and political decision makers right in

their local community. The following pages highlight the

celebratory events we have held as we move forward

with our mission, and recognize the individuals and

groups that have generously supported us as we have

embarked on our ambitious efforts. They are friends in

the truest sense.

Esquire House 360°. This year’s event featured a 17,000-square-foot Italian-style villa in Beverly

Hills built to mirror the editorial range of the vaunted magazine and to reflect the lifestyle of today’s

modern man—all while raising vital funds for charities, including the VH1 Save The Music

Foundation. The exclusive event raised more than $45,000 and was hosted by Kiefer Sutherland,

Jaime Pressly, Wilmer Valderrama, Tyrese Gibson, Omar Epps, Gary Dourdan, VH1 General

Manager Tom Calderone, and Brian Graden, the Entertainment President of MTV Networks

Music Group. On top of the luxurious setting, guests enjoyed rocking performances by Columbia

recording artist Mat Kearney and Ironworks recording artists Rocco DeLuca and the Burden.

BIG SHOPPING DAY 2006On December 2, VH1 Save The Music took over Robertson Boulevard in Los Angeles for the Second

Annual VH1 BIG Shopping Day. Throughout the day, the public was invited to shop at participating

boutiques including Agnés B., American Apparel, Anya Hindmarch, Adriano Goldschmied, Camper,

Chan Luu, Curve, Diavolina, Erica Courtney, George Smith, Kalologie Skincare, Horn, Kiehl’s, Kitson,

Kitson Kids, Kitson Men, LF Stores, Lisa Kline, Lisa Kline Kids, Lisa Kline Men, M.A.C., Madison,

Nanette Lepore, Paige Premium Denim, Poleci, Scott Hill L.A., Sky, Ted Baker, Tory Burch, Vionnet,

WESC, and Yellowman. Hundreds of shopping enthusiasts like Kristin Bell, Illeana Douglas, Melissa

Joan Hart and her son Mason, Allison Sweeney, Sara Thompson, and Paris Hilton hit the streets

and shopped at the fabulous participating stores. Some then stopped by the tent on Alden where

Curve Fragrances, L.A. Confidential, Star 98.7, Kalologie Skincare, Chan Luu, LF Stores, and Erica

Courtney set up tables offering opportunities to purchase, sample, and win. Chaya Brasserie hosted

celebrities like Diem Brown, Perez Hilton, Billy Morrison, and Riki Rachtman. Culminating the

action-packed day was a riveting performance by 10th Street Entertainment recording artist

Marion Raven. A percentage of the day’s sales from each store benefited VH1 Save The Music’s

work—all in all raising more than $40,000 to support the Foundation’s efforts to restore instrumental

music programs in the Los Angeles public schools.

MUSIC BY DESIGNOn March 21, 2007, during L.A. Fashion Week, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation and Gibson/Baldwin Music Education kicked off the first-ever Music by Design Auction with an exclusive cupcake-and-cocktail party at the Gibson Showroom in Beverly Hills. Guests bid on one-of-a-kind customized guitars and enjoyed intimate performances by Ryan Cabrera and Bad Boy recording artist Nelson; more than $5,000 was raised through this first installation. This year’s participating designers included AG Adriano Goldschmied, G-Star Raw, Horn, justsweet (whose Creative Director is Jennifer Lopez), Kiehl’s, Lisa Kline, Lisa Kline Kids, Lisa Kline Men, M.A.C. Cosmetics, Nanette Lepore, Poleci, Starbucks, Vionnet, Von Dutch, WESC, Yellow-man, and many more.

LIFT TICKET TO RIDEIn March, VH1 once again hit the slopes of Beaver Creek, Colorado, for the annual Lift Ticket to Ride event featuring Robert Randolph and the Family Band, All-American Rejects, and Paolo Nutini—the ultimate winter party. Guests spent the weekend skiing, snowboarding, relaxing in a world-class spa, and partying in the mountains in true VH1 style. Lift Ticket to Ride brings guests scenic summits, celebrity skiers, hot music, and special editions of viewers’ favorite VH1 original programming. To top it off, through the generosity of this year’s sponsors Suzuki, Sharpie, and Warner Bros., the event benefited a wonderful cause: the VH1 Save The Music Foundation.

2ND ANNUAL VH1 ROCK HONORS AFTER-PARTYOn May 12, 2007, VH1 Save The Music once again hosted the official after party for VH1 Rock Honors, with all proceeds benefiting the Foundation. This year’s show, hosted by Bam Margera, honored Genesis, Heart, Ozzy Osbourne, and ZZ Top with tribute performances by Alice in Chains, Keane, Nickelback, Gretchen Wilson, and Queens of the Stone Age. After the show, more than 700 guests attended the Vegas party at the House of Blues Music Arena in Mandalay Bay. The evening was sponsored by Anheuser-Busch, Garnier Fructis, jetBlue Airways, and Las Vegas magazine and raised more than $110,000 to support the work of the Foundation.

GOO GOO DOLLSIn June, national real estate investment bank Buchanan Street Partners raised $50,000 through the first an-nual Encore for Education charity concert featuring the multiplatinum Goo Goo Dolls at the House of Blues in Los Angeles. The event was sponsored by Arden Realty, Bixby Land Co., CB Richard Ellis, Maguire, LBA Realty, and Real Estate Southern California.

The VH1 Save The Music 10th Anniversary Gala, presented by LG Electronics MobileComm U.S.A., Inc.

(LG Mobile Phones), celebrated the Foundation’s 10 remarkable years of restoring music education

programs in more than 1,500 public schools across the country. The event, hosted by Maria Menounos,

featured performances by John Mayer, Jon Bon Jovi, Roger Waters of Pink Floyd, Miri Ben-Ari, and a

61-piece orchestra made up of students from VH1 Save The Music grant-recipient schools across the

United States. During the celebration, the Foundation paid tribute to former president Bill Clinton, Senator

Hillary Rodham Clinton, Mariah Carey, John Sykes, founder of the VH1 Save The Music Foundation, and

NAMM: The International Music Products Association for their unyielding support and dedication to the

Foundation’s mission.

New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg kicked off the evening by welcoming guests back to the city

where the Foundation began, followed by NBC’s Conan O’Brien, who showcased his own musical talents

in a skit with a student from the orchestra. Later in the program, Tim Gunn of Project Runway was on hand

to auction off Paul McCartney’s autographed, stage-played Hofner guitar—donated by the Beatle himself.

The Board and staff of the VH1 Save The Music Foundation honor the memory of Sandy Feldstein. Sandy passed on

August 30, 2007, surrounded by his family at his home in Tarzana, California, after a yearlong battle with cancer. Sandy

was a longtime member of the Foundation’s Board of Directors: He served as Board Secretary (2000–2002) and as Board

Chairman (2002–2004), and he remained an active, deeply committed member until his passing. We redouble our efforts

as a testament to Sandy’s passion for music and dedication to music education.
