BIBLE STUDY OUTLINE

FOR THE YEAR

2020

THEME:

“IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST”

FOREWORD

The Church of Nigeria Bible Study outline has, since inception, been an instrument of in-depth study of the word of God. In a organized fashion, deep revelational knowledge of God's word is regularly brought to the people.

Last year, we considered Godly Leadership: Politics and Christian Discipleship. It is expected that by the end of the studies last year, Christians, especially those in leadership positions in the public domain, shall be empowered to exemplify godly leadership. Christians in general are equally expected to promote godly leadership wherever they are. This year 2020, considering the fact that involvement in political leadership with the focus of bringing godliness to bear is itself engagement in spiritual warfare, we have chosen as theme for this year: “IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST”.

The Scripture says: "Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." (Philippians 2:9-11). Also that "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved." (Acts 4:12).

The Bible Study this year is intended to expound the significance of the name of Jesus Christ, both in our salvation and our mission in the world. It is what Jesus accomplished and what the Church is empowered to accomplish through the power of His name that has made Christianity the unique faith. While on earth, His disciples experienced the power of His name, when the seventy-two returned with joy and said, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name." (Luke 10:17). Jesus Himself said He protected them by the power of His own name (John 17:11-12). That name is the same yesterday, today and for ever (Hebrews 13:8).

We, therefore, present this Bible Study Outline for use in all our churches and institutions for the year 2020 with the hope that increasing numbers will come to the knowledge of the power in the name of our LORD, Jesus Christ, and be equipped to employ the name appropriately.

We will continue to express our profound gratitude to the Liturgy and Spirituality Committee competently led by The Most Rev'd Henry Ndukuba for always working hard every year to ensure that this great resource continues to be available and on time. We do not take your efforts for granted at all. May the Good Lord, whom you have so faithfully served all these years, reward you abundantly.

The Most Rev'd Dr. Nicholas D. Okoh,

Archbishop, Metropolitan and Primate,

Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion)

PREFACE:

The Word of God is a very rich and enormous treasure, a storehouse of eternal and inestimable blessings. We are grateful for the gift of God’s Word. This year 2020, we need to re-focus on Jesus Christ, the Author and Finisher of our faith, so that we will have perfect vision and understanding of who Jesus Christ is. Just as Paul the Apostle said “I want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in His sufferings, becoming like Him in His death...” (Philippians 3:10).

Our Study therefore will focus on “THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST”. It is common to hear people shout ‘Jesus, Jesus’ or ‘in Jesus Name’. Some do it out of faith and devotion, others do it as a slang or what is in vogue. The Name of Jesus Christ is His identity and Authority. As such we should not take the Name of the LORD in vain. “You should not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for he LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses His name” (Exodus 20:7).

We need to know the LORD Jesus Christ more, love and be totally committed to Him, so that even if we suffer for our faith in Him, let it be a joy to us. The Name of Jesus Christ is salvation, healing, deliverance, safety, a strong tower, power, hope and access to everything the Father has reserved for us. By His Name stand, fight the battle of faith, take hold of eternal to which we are called and have all round victory.

We appreciate the Team Writers, Editors and Consultants whose labour of love have given us the Bible Study Outline. May we all be richly blessed through the Study of God’s Word. Amen!

The Most Rev. Henry C. Ndukuba

Chairman, Liturgy & Spirituality Committee,

TABLE OF CONTENTS:

STUDY 1

2nd Sunday After Christmas January 5, 2020

THEME: IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST

SUB-THEME: INTRODUCTION (1)

TOPIC: Name and Definition

TEXTS: Genesis 1:5; 2:19-23; Matthew1:21

AIMS:

i. To define what is ‘name’

ii. to help us understand the implication of ‘name’ and

iii. to examine the Biblical records of the importance God attaches to names.

INTRODUCTION: “Name” means the word (sign) or combination of words (signs) by which something or someone is called and by means of which something or someone can be distinguished or identified. This study will further expose the implication of names and the importance God attaches to them.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTION:

1. How would you define ‘name’ in your own words?

2. From Gen 1:5; 2:19-23; Matt.1:21, what do you understand to be the reason for giving names as God did? See also Luke 1:13-20, 59-64

3. How do people give names in traditional African society and for what reason (s)?

4. In the light of the biblical examples, how should Christians give names to their children? 1Sam 1:20

CONCLUSION: Names are marks of identity and Christians should preferably follow the biblical examples to reflect expected divine mission and purpose. Christians should prayerfully and thoughtfully give names they would be proud of, to their children when the manifestation comes into effect in the lives of those so named. And so Christians should do when they name an object or things in their lives and in all their endeavours.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Without a name, no identity can be established for anybody/anything

MEMORY VERSE: Matthew 1:21 "And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins."

STUDY 2

1st Sunday after Epiphany January 12, 2020

THEME: IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST

SUB-THEME: INTRODUCTION (2)

TOPIC: Understanding the use of names in the Bible

TEXTS: Gen 35:18, 1 Sam 4:20-21; 1 Chron. 4:9

AIMS:

i. to show us that the names we give to our children carry significance

ii. to help warn against the danger of giving names based on prevailing unhealthy life’s experiences, circumstances and

iii. to acquaint us with a more balanced view about names and how negative names might be positively transformed

INTRODUCTION: Names have gone to a great extent to foster order in our world. Imagine a world where nothing and nobody is given any name! As a matter of fact, names have been found in the Holy Scriptures of the Bible that has shaped the future of individuals and nations. The importance of names cannot therefore be overemphasized. In this study, we shall look critically at the importance of names from all possible angles.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. Explain the circumstances surrounding the names given in these texts, and point out the possible implications for their lives, if any: Gen 35:18, 1Sam 1:20; 4:20-21; 1 Chron. 4:9-10

2. “Sometimes, we become what we are called, and at other times, we come to be called what we have become”. Discuss in line with Gen.17:5; 32:27-28. (Ben-oni and Benjamin mean Son of my sorrow and son of my old age respectively)

3. ‘Some people have joyous names, yet they lived or died sadly”. Why is this so? Note: examples include Lazarus (Luke 16:20-21), a Greek name meaning ‘God is my help’; Absalom, which means ‘father of peace’ (2 Samuel 13:28-29; 15:14)

4. How can negative names become positively transformed? Gen. 32:27-28; John 1:42; 2 Cor.5:17; Phil.2:9-11

CONCLUSION: Quite often, the name given to a person turns out to influence who he/she becomes, as it was in the cases of Jabez and Jacob. It is also true that what some other persons like Peter became was defined by their names where Christ was involved. However, whatever the name (that is where a mistake has already been made), a genuine relationship with God through Jesus Christ can and does make all the difference.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Be careful, of the name you bear, and give to others!

MEMORY VERSE:1Samuel 1:20 “So it came to pass in the process of time that Hannah conceived and bore a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, "Because I have asked for him from the LORD."

STUDY 3

2nd Sunday after Epiphany January 19, 2020

THEME: IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST

SUB-THEME: INTRODUCTION (3)

TOPIC: ‘In the Name of Jesus’: An Introduction

TEXTS: Acts 3:1-10; Phil.2:9-11

AIMS:

i. to show us why Christ was given the name ‘Jesus’, and what it means

ii. to discuss what is implied when we say ‘in the name of Jesus’ in prayers and in other confessions or declarations.

INTRODUCTION: Every Christian is taught and admonished to use the name of Jesus in prayer, and whenever we find ourselves in any form of danger, to invoke the name, ‘Jesus!’, consciously or unconsciously. Acts 4:12 says the name of Jesus is the only pathway to salvation for the kingdom of God (as Christ Himself confirmed in John 14:6). The authority and power of that name remains incontrovertible in the Scripture. This study is to stir up our minds about this great name and prepare us for what to expect in the rest of these series of Bible Study.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. What name did God say the child to be born by Mary should be called and why? Matt.1:21; Luke1:30-33

2. Identify the reason for using the name of Jesus in all we do as Christians from these texts: Mark.16:17-18; John 14:14; Acts 2:36; 3:6-8; Phil. 2:9-11

3. Read Acts 19:13-17, and explain why the use of the name of Jesus by the seven sons of Sceva failed to produce the desired result, and point out similar examples in the Church today.

4. How may the Church effectively use the name of Jesus for victory over situations and circumstances? Acts 2:38; 3:6.

CONCLUSION: The Church is uniquely positioned to use the authority of the name of Jesus. This authority centres on the unique identity of Jesus Christ.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Are you like the sons of Sceva?

MEMORY VERSE: Acts 2:38 “Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit”.

STUDY 4

3rd Sunday after Epiphany January 26, 2020

THEME: IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST

SUB-THEME: Jesus Christo (1)

TOPIC: The Meaning of Jesus in the Bible

TEXTS: Matthew 1:18-21

AIM: To teach us the meaning of the name of Jesus and how this works out in the lives of those who turn to Him for salvation as well as those who fail to turn to Him; and also the implication for the Church.

INTRODUCTION: In both the Old and New Testaments, the name ‘Jesus’ means “help of Jehovah or Saviour”. It is the Greek form of the Hebrew name Joshua, which was originally Hoshea (Num. 13:8, 16), but was changed by Moses into Jehoshua (Num. 13:16; 1 Chr. 7:27), or Joshua. After the Exile it assumed the form Jeshua, hence the Greek form “Jesus”. It was given to our Lord to denote the object of his mission, “to save” (Matthew 1:21). How His name relates to His mission and the implications for us constitute the subject of this study.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. From the key text, identify the meaning of the name, “Jesus”. See also John 1:29

2. What do the following texts say about those who call on or believe in the name of Jesus? Acts 2:21; 16:27-33; (Rom.10:13)

3. What is the danger or implication of failing to call on, or believe in the name of Jesus for salvation? John 3:17-18; 8:24

4. If the hope of being saved is tied directly to Jesus alone, why are there so many people, even in the Church, in whose lives this salvation is not so evidenced? 1Tim 3:1-5; Tit 1:16.

CONCLUSION: Jesus stands for the salvation of sinners from eternal death, and it is only those who have put their faith in Him who shall experience this. Whoever fails to receive this Salvation by failing to believe in Him cannot be saved.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Failure of a sinner to believe in Jesus is to embrace death!

MEMORY VERSE: Rom.10:13 “For whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved."

STUDY 5

4th Sunday after Epiphany February 2, 2020

THEME: IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST

SUB-THEME:Jesus Christ (2)

TOPIC: The Meaning of “Christ” in the Bible

TEXTS: Palms 2:2; Matthew 16:13-16

AIMS:

i. to show the meaning of ‘Christ’ in the Bible and

ii. to acquaint with the implication of the “Christ” in the identity and mission of Jesus

INTRODUCTION: “Christ” is the Greek translation of the Hebrew word "Messiah" that means the “anointed one”. It is the official title of our Lord, denoting that He was anointed or consecrated to his great redemptive work. In this study, we shall attempt to look more closely at the meaning of this name, and its implication in the identity and mission of Jesus and the identity of all who follow Him.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. Explain the meaning of ‘Christ' in relation to the identity of Jesus: Matt.16:16; Acts 18:5

2. What do the following texts teach concerning the Christ? Isaiah 61:1 (cf.Lukek.4:18); Matt.3:16-17; Heb.1:9

3. ‘Only the anointed one anoints with the Holy Spirit’. Identify how this has been worked out in the earthly and post -resurrection ministry of Jesus from these texts: John 1:33; Lk.24:49; Acts 1:8; 2:1-4; Eph.1:13.

4. Can anyone claim to belong to Christ (even if He/she is in the Church) without God’s Holy Spirit? Discuss. Rom.8:9

CONCLUSION: ‘Christ’ is God’s seal of the identity of Jesus. It is what makes Him the anointed one or Messiah. Jesus Christ has extended His ‘anointed’ ministry to the Church to this day as He still baptizes His followers with the blessed Spirit and has continued to do good by this anointing which He shares with the Church, His body, and by the same Spirit also those who belong to Him are sealed until the day of redemption. Are you sealed with the blessed Holy Spirit?

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Whoever belongs to Christ must have the Holy Spirit

MEMORY VERSE: Matt.16:16 “Simon Peter answered and said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

STUDY 6

Septuagesima Sunday February 9, 2020

THEME: IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST

SUB-THEME: Jesus Christ (3)

TOPIC: His pre-existence-The Ancient of Days

TEXTS:Psalm 90:2; Daniel 7:9, 13 and 22.

AIMS:

i. to teach us the meaning of the phrase, ‘Ancient of Days’ and identify who this is and

ii. to discuss the pre-existence of Christ and its implication to the Church and all children of God on earth

INTRODUCTION: God is often represented by the term ‘Ancient’, as He that is “from everlasting to everlasting” (Psalm 90:2) and as “the first and the last” in Isaiah 44:6. “Ancient” indicates that God existed before time began. In Isaiah 43:13, we find that God refers to Himself as existing from ancient of days (literally, “before days were”). We read in Genesis 1 that God created time, days and nights, so God existed before the beginning of time and days.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. Explain in your own words what the ‘Ancient of Days’ means.

2. Who is this ‘Ancient of Days’ in Daniel 7:9, 13, and 22? See John 1:1-3; 8:58; Rev.1:17-18; 2:8

3. Given that Christ has always existed even before the world and all else began, what implication does this hold for the Church here on earth: Matt.17:1-5; Eph. 2:5-6; Col.1:15-18; 2:8-10

4. The eternal existence of Christ also implies pre-eminence and superiority to all things temporal or spiritual (Col.1:15-20). Discuss the implication of this to a child of God. See also Heb.3:7-8.

CONCLUSION: Jesus is the ‘Ancient of Days’, and He existed before all things came to be as we have it today. He is pre-eminent and superior to all things earthly, heavenly or spiritual. No one therefore compares with Christ. This implies that the Church is better placed far above every other known religion, power or authority. Whoever will not hear and obey Christ has missed everything.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Christ is superior to all creation, known and unknown!

MEMORY VERSE: Psalms 90:2 “Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever You had formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God”.

STUDY 7

Sexagesima Sunday February 16, 2020

THEME: IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST

SUB-THEME: Jesus Christ (4)

TOPIC: His Oneness with God the Father

TEXTS: John 10:25-30; 17:22

Aim: To explain this statement of Jesus, “I and the Father are one”, and its implication in His redemptive mission.

INTRODUCTION: Isaiah predicted: “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel”. (Isaiah 7:14; Matt.1:20-23). Even though Christ would be born a human son, yet He would be divine in nature at the same time (Isaiah 9:6). In the New Testament, Jesus declared, “I and the Father are one”. In this study we shall attempt to unravel this mystery of Christ being divine, and the implication it has in Christ’s redemptive work on earth.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. Explain the meaning of the phrase, “I and the Father are one” in your own words.

2. Why did Jesus make the extra effort to explain the exact nature of His being in John 10:30? See John 10:24

3. How did the Jews understand the declaration of Jesus? John 10:31-33

4. Would Jesus have been able to save humanity in His state of divinity if He hadn’t been fully human? Read Phil.2:5-11; Heb.2:14-18 and Discuss

CONCLUSION: How could the one who is fully God take up the nature of mortal man? Yet, that was what He voluntarily did in order to save sinful humanity and to bring us to glory. It is the marvel of God’s salvation plan. However, to the person who believes, it simply means the same being; one in essence and nature, one in authority and power, and not one barely in will and affection, but one in concord or consent.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Whoever is not saved by Christ will perish eternally

MEMORY VERSE: John 10:30 “I and My Father are one."

STUDY 8

Quinquagesima Sunday February 23, 2020

THEME: IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST

SUB-THEME: Jesus Christ (5)

TOPIC: His Oneness with the Holy Spirit

TEXTS: Matthew 3:11; 1 Corinthians 15:45

AIMS:

i. to trace the relationship of Jesus with the Holy Spirit in the scriptures and

ii. to highlight the continuous work of Christ with God’s people through the agency of the Holy Spirit

INTRODUCTION: In the previous study, we had looked at the eternal existence of Christ and His sameness with the Father. In this study, we shall look at another aspect of the divine Christ-His sameness with the Holy Spirit who has continued Christ’s work of redemption in the Church until Christ’s second coming.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. In each of the following scriptures, identify the work of the Holy Spirit in relation to Christ: Matt.3:11; Luke 1:35; Luke 3:21-22; Rom.8:9,11

2. Explain how Jesus and the Holy Spirit are described in these texts? 1 Cor.15:45 (cf. John 5:21) and 1 Peter 1:11. See also 1 John 5:7

3. Relate the ministry of Jesus Christ to that of the Holy Spirit in the continuing redemption work in the contemporary Church. John 7:37-39; 15:26; 16:13-15; Rom. 8:26-27;

4. Jesus said, "...lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age". How does God maintain His presence in the life of the Christian today? 1 Corinthians 12:13; Gal.3:27

CONCLUSION: The work of Christ’s salvation continues through the Holy Spirit. Indeed the Holy Spirit is also referred to as “the Spirit of Jesus”; just as Jesus is referred to as the “quickening Spirit”. The Holy Spirit testifies of Jesus as well as glorifies Him. We see therefore that just as Christ is of the same essence with the Father, even so He is of the same essence with the Holy Spirit. It is the unfathomable mystery of the triune God!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: The Holy Spirit testifies of and glorifies Jesus Christ

MEMORY VERSE: 1Cor 15:45 “And so it is written, "The first man Adam became a living being." The last Adam became a life-giving spirit”.

STUDY 9

1st Sunday in Lent March 1, 2020

THEME: IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST

SUB-THEME: The Humanity of Christ (1)

TOPIC: His Historical Existence

TEXT: Luke 2:1-20

AIM: To acquaint us with the history of the humanity of Christ

INTRODUCTION: The humanity of Jesus is not a fabricated story. Scriptures have even recorded the names of kings who ruled at one point or the other before, during or after the birth of Jesus, including Herod, Pontius Pilate, Caesar Augustus and other Roman Governors. This study will help us appreciate and establish these historical facts.

STUDY GUIDES/QUESTIONS:

1. What do you understand by the term, “The humanity of Christ”?

2. What can we learn about the history of Jesus’ human existence on earth from the genealogy recorded in Matt. 1:1-17?

3. Read Luke 1:5; 2:1-4; 3:1-3; John 3:1, 18:33, and identify some of the historical figures at the time of the birth or death of Jesus Christ; pointing out how this can help our understanding of His historical existence.

4. What practical steps can we take as believers to preserve the essential information about our faith to future generations? Deuteronomy 6:6-7

CONCLUSION: As believers, it is important for us to understand the history of the humanity of Christ as it will help us to duly appreciate not just His sacrifice on our behalf, but also the truth of His human existence at a point in the history of our world.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Established history does not lie

MEMORY VERSE:Matthew 1:1 “The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham”.

STUDY 10

2nd Sunday in Lent March 8, 2020

THEME: IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST

SUB-THEME: The Humanity of Christ (2)

TOPIC: His Incarnation

TEXT: John 1:1-14

Aim: To help us understand that although He was God, Jesus Christ became human by the Holy Spirit in order to save sinful and lost humanity

INTRODUCTION: In Christian theology, the doctrine of the incarnation holds that Jesus is the living “divine Logos” (Word) and the “hypostasis” (individual existence of the dual nature of Christ as God and man). By taking on a human body and human nature, Jesus was made flesh and conceived in the womb of a woman. This affirms Jesus Christ as both fully God and fully human.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. What do you understand by the term “Incarnation”?

2. What do the following passages teach about the incarnation of Christ? Matt. 1:18; John 1:1-3, 14; 1Tim. 3:16

3. From the genealogical history of Christ in Matt. 1:1-17, discuss the sovereignty of God in the light of some personalities who were without a sterling reputation, but were among the ancestors of Christ. What lessons are there for us?

4. Discuss the benefits of the Incarnation of Christ to mankind in the light of the following passages

CONCLUSION: God became man in order to reach mankind with the Gospel of Salvation. He left His throne above to take our nature upon Him for our salvation and deliverance. May we learn to appreciate and glorify Him in all that we do.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: God’s Son became a man for the sake of sinful men.

MEMORY VERSE: John 1:14 “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth”.

STUDY 11

3rd Sunday in Lent March 15, 2020

THEME: IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST

SUB-THEME: The Humanity of Christ (3)

TOPIC: His Nativity

TEXTS: Matt. 2:1-12; John 7:42

AIM: To show the nativity of Christ as a further proof of His being a child having an earthly history.

INTRODUCTION: The nativity of Jesus Christ is the basis of our celebration of Christmas today. Two of the Gospels, Matthew and Luke give the account of His conception and birth. Even though the accounts differ, they both agree that Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, during the reign of King Herod; His mother was married to a man named Joseph who was descended from King David and was not His biological father, and that His birth was by a divine arrangement.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. In your own words, describe what you understand by the term “Christ’s Nativity.”

2. From the key text of this study, and Jerusalem Pilgrimage experiences (if any), how may you convince somebody about the nativity of Christ?

3. What do the following passages teach about the nativity of Christ? Micah 5:2; Matt. 2:1-6; 13-18 (John 7:42)

4. Discuss what we can learn from the nativity of Christ and how it can strengthen our faith. Phil 2:5-7.

CONCLUSION: The Scripture is so clear about the nativity of Christ. Names of cities and other details have been given for any doubter to see and believe. Let us build our confidence in this Man who left His throne above for the sake of our sinful and lost world.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Mysterious! ‘The Immortal’ was born by man.

MEMORY VERSE: John 7:42 “"Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, where David was?"

STUDY 12

4th Sunday in Lent (Mothering Sunday) March 22, 2020

THEME:IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST

SUB-THEME: The Humanity of Christ (4)

TOPIC: His Human Nature -1: Hunger

TEXTS: Mark 11:12-14, 20-24

AIMS: To show that Jesus lived as a normal human being in His incarnate state

INTRODUCTION: In His incarnation, Jesus Christ experienced all that every human being did (Heb. 4:15). Today’s text states very clearly that “when they came from Bethany, He was hungry” (Mark 11:12.) Again, our Lord was also desperately hungry of doing the will of His Father (John 4:31-35). His being hungry, just like all of us do, is a further proof that He was truly like every human being during His incarnation.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. How the reaction of Jesus to hunger in Mark 11:12-14 prove to us His humanity? Read again Mark 11:12-14, 20-24

2. Why do you think Jesus cursed the fig tree; and what spiritual message do you think He was conveying by doing so? Matt 3:10; 7:18-19; John 15:1-5.

3. Discuss the human nature of Christ in His hunger to do the will of God in John 4:31-38, and implications for us who are His followers today. See also Matt.5:6

CONCLUSION: Christ was hungry to show that He was a real human being while on earth. However, it must be noted that He did not allow His hunger to overshadow the hunger for God’s will in His life and mission on earth.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: To be hungry is real human nature and is not sinful.

MEMORY VERSE: Matthew 5:6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled”.

STUDY 13

5th Sunday in Lent March 29, 2020

THEME:IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST

SUB-THEME: The Humanity of Christ (5)

TOPIC: Human Nature -2: Tiredness

TEXTS: Mark 6:30-32; John 4:1-8

AIMS:

i. to show that in His incarnation, Jesus experienced tiredness; and

ii. that there is a time to work and a time to rest

INTRODUCTION: Tiredness is something every human tends to experience no matter how physically strong one might be. Our Lord Jesus got tired at some point in the course of His moving from one place to another, preaching the gospel. Jesus was conscious of His human nature and thus never overworked Himself as He sometimes took time off to rest. Our study today will help us appreciate this vital aspect of His human nature.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. What is tiredness? Discuss the factors that can predispose us to tiredness. 2 Sam 17:29

2. From our key texts, discuss the evidence that Christ was tired at some points in His earthly life and Ministry.

3. What can we learn from Jesus’ command to His disciples in Mark 6:31?

4. Discuss ways in which you can assist your local Pastor to have a relaxed mind and a healthy body so as to have a robust ministry.

CONCLUSION: The body is simply made up of flesh and blood, bone and tissues. When these are not properly serviced – just like the parts of a car, they will pack up. As a minister, learn to create a time of rest for yourself and as a parishioner, consider ways you can assist your minister to relax.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Whoever fails to rest will be laid to rest!

MEMORY VERSE: Mark 6:31 “And He said to them, "Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while." For there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat”.

STUDY 14

6th Sunday in Lent (Palm Sunday) April 5 2020

THEME:IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST

SUB-THEME: The Humanity of Christ (6)

TOPIC: His Passion and Agony

TEXT: Matthew 27:27-49

AIM: To acquaint us with our Lord’s passion and agony for man’s sake

INTRODUCTION: Today, being Palm Sunday, we focus attention on the passion and agony of Christ. The historical record and the reality of Jesus’ passion from Gethsemane to the Cross where He was crucified remain concrete fact that He actually suffered in the flesh. His suffering was never taken over by any celestial being but by Himself. A careful study of the agony and passion of Christ will help us appreciate His humanity the more.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. What do these two words – “Passion” and “Agony” mean to you?

2. Discuss the passion and agony of Christ from the following passages: Matthew 26:47-56; Mark 15:16-25, 33-37; Luke 22:39-44

3. How did Jesus handle His agony and passion, and how can we similarly handle ours when we experience them? Luke 23:33-34; Heb. 12:2

CONCLUSION: Jesus endured the Cross; bore the pains and agony in order to save mankind. He died for sins He did not commit. Let us not crucify Him a second time by living wayward and offensive lives. Moreover, Christ submitted fully to the will of God in His passion and agony through prayerful dependence, and the result was a resounding victory on the cross. We must learn from this example in our hour of trial to guarantee our victory as well.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Total submission guarantees absolute victory in the hour of trial

MEMORY VERSE: Luke 22:44 “And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground”.

Easter Sunday April 12, 2020

THEME: IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST

SUB-THEME: The Humanity of Christ (7)

TOPIC: His Death and Burial

TEXTS: Luke 23:44-66

AIMS:

i. to show that Jesus Christ died as a human being and

ii. that He rose from the dead unlike every other human being.

INTRODUCTION: Today, the Church celebrates the resurrection from the death of our Lord Jesus Christ. Like all humans, He actually died, having on His lips with the words of Psalm 31:5, “Into thy hands I commit my spirit”. By giving up the ghost, He breathed His last. In this study we shall examine the evidences of His death, as well as His burial, a precursor for His resurrection and the implications for the faith of the Church.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. From today’s texts, narrate the story of the death of Jesus Christ.

2. Identify from the following texts the evidences for the death and burial of Christ: Matt 27:50-56; Luke 23:50-56; John 19:31-36.

3. How do the passages about Christ’s death and burial prove to us that He was and is human?

4. What is the implication of His death, burial and resurrection for the faith we confess as Christians? 1 Cor.15:12-21

CONCLUSION: Medical science teaches that at death, water and blood separate because of the coagulation of blood. At the piercing of His body with the spear by one of the Roman soldiers, water and blood gushed out. Christ indeed died in the flesh, thus setting the stage for His glorious resurrection on Sunday morning which we celebrate today. This is a great mystery, the consummation of which will be at His second coming as we always confess at the celebration of the Holy Eucharist: “Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again”.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Mysterious!!‘The Immortal’ dies

MEMORY VERSE: 1 Cor. 15:3-4 “For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures”.

THEME: IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST

SUB-THEME: The Humanity of Christ (8)

TOPIC: Human Nature (4): He slept

TEXT: Mark 4:35-38

AIM: To show that in His humanity, Jesus Christ also experienced fatigue

INTRODUCTION: Like any human being, after the fatigues of a busy day of ministering under the hot sun, our Lord sank into sleep while crossing the Lake in spite of the raging tempest. However, since He is the Lord over any physical and spiritual storm, He was comfortable in His sleep. He commanded the winds and the storm to be still and they all went quiet.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. From the text, what factor(s) could have made Christ to have fallen asleep although the disciples were awake?

2. In the light of the declaration by the Psalmist in Psalm 121:4, how would you explain the sleep of Jesus in Mark 4:35-38?

3. Discuss what should be our attitude when facing the storms of life, and Christ seems to be ‘sleeping’ in spite of our challenging situation? Mark 4:38; Prov.24:10; Heb.10:35-39

CONCLUSION: In His humanity, Jesus felt the way every other human felt, He slept; yet in His divine nature, He nether sleeps nor slumber. In the midst of the storms of life, we should trust Him, no matter how it takes.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Christ both divine and human, slept in the boat! .

MEMORY VERSE: Mark 5:38 “But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?"

THEME: IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST

SUB-THEME: The Humanity of Christ 9

TOPIC: Human Nature (5): Compassionate

TEXT: Mark 6:34

AIM: To teach us the compassionate nature of Christ and its implications for Christians.

INTRODUCTION: The word compassion is defined as “being sympathetic, having pity and concern for the suffering or misfortunes of others.” The Scripture shows us in many places how compassionate Christ is. At the sight of the multitude that had followed Him in the course of His earthly ministry, He was always desirous to meet both the physical and spiritual needs of the helpless and hopeless people.

STUDY GUIDES

1. From the following passages, discuss the compassionate nature of Christ: Matt 9:35-38; Mark 6:34; Luke 9:11-17

2. What comfort should or can we draw from the compassion of Christ, in the midst of our lives challenges? Heb. 4:15; 1Pet. 5:7

3. What does the parable of the Good Samaritan teach us about compassion as believers? Luke 10:25-37

4. Discuss the ways we can practice compassion today as believers in Christ

CONCLUSION: Our Lord is indeed a compassionate God. While on earth, He did not take care of only the spiritual needs of people around Him, but their physical needs as well. Let us learn to follow His example.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Being born again is not only measured by manifestation of spiritual gifts.

MEMORY VERSE: Heb 4:15 “For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin”.

SUB-THEME: Attributes of Jesus Christ (1)

TOPIC: The Word of God

TEXTS:Genesis 1:1-3, 6, 9; John 1:1-3; John 14:8-9.

AIMS:

i. to expound the reality of the word spoken in creation,

ii. to expose the fact that the spoken word cannot be dissociated from the speaker and

iii. that the relationship between God and the word will remain an eternal mystery.

INTRODUCTION: The account of the creation of the world has been stated in Genesis 1: the world was created by the spoken word of God (note the repeating phrase in Genesis 1, “Then God said...”). The Word possessed life and the life was the light (The first to be created) of the world. Jesus is the Word of God in John 1:1- 3 who made all things that were created to come into existence?

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. State how God created the world in Gen. 1:1-3, 6 &9. Is it possible to dissociate the word spoken from the speaker of the word? If not, explain further.

2. The Word of God possesses life and the life is the light of the world. John 1:3. Explain this statement of fact with reference to John11:25; John 8:12; 9:5; 1Cor 15:20.

3. The first thing to be created is light. Justify this with the first born of creation in Col. 1:12-17. Who then can you say is “the Light and the first born of creation”?

4. How is Jesus manifesting in our generation as the Word of God? Mark 16:17;John 14:12-14

CONCLUSION: There are mysteries concerning the divine nature and to the relationship between God the Father and the Son. They are too deep for human explanation; we have to wait for eternity to solve them. However, this is clear: that God creates and speaks to man through ‘the Word’. As we clothe our thoughts in words, God reveals his will by the Word, and when that Word is clothed in flesh, as the Saviour of mankind, we recognize Him as Jesus Christ.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Since a person and his or her word is one, so is God and His word.

MEMORY VERSE:John14: 9 Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me… He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, 'Show us the Father'?

SUB-THEME: Attributes of Jesus Christ (2)

TOPIC: The Life

TEXTS:1John 5:10-13.John. 1:4; 14:6

AIMS:

i. to explain the biblical concept of life,

ii. to expose Jesus Christ as the divine life and

iii. to teach the importance of eternal life to mankind.

INTRODUCTION:

The divine attribute of life in biblical context describes it as the ability to provide life, even eternal life. This kind of life can only be given by one who is Himself eternal. “In him was life, and that life was the light of men” (John. 1:4). On earth we have a life to live after which death opens the gate to eternity that is, to enter into either eternal condemnation or eternal life. How then can we inherit eternal life?

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. Explain the word “Life” from the Biblical perspective? Gen 2:7; Gen 47:9; Job 27:3.

2. Differentiate between the life we live on earth and that we will live in eternity? John 11:21-25

3. How can we prove that Jesus is the life. John 11:25, Matt 28:1-6; Acts 1:9-11; Rev 1:17-18

4. Mention some points of the importance of eternal life to mankind. John 5:24; Rev 2:11; 20:6; 21:1-8. How can we inherit eternal life? John 3;16; 20:31

CONCLUSION: Hell is as real as the eternal or second death of all ungodly people on earth. To escape this eternal sorrow, acceptance of Jesus as the Lord and Saviour of all mankind is the only option because eternal life with God can only be received through Him.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: No Christ, no eternal life.

MEMORY VERSE: 1John 5: 11 “And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son”.

5th Sunday after Easter May 17, 2020

THEME: IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST

SUB-THEME: Attributes of Jesus Christ (3)

TOPIC: Self-existence

TEXTS:John. 5:26; Hebrews 7:16

AIMS:

i. to show Jesus Christ as one with God the Father in creating all things and

ii. to teach that Christ was never created like all other creatures on earth and in heaven.

INTRODUCTION:

God is the source of all life. He is therefore called the living God, in opposition to idols which have no life. This means that life in God or God’s existence is not derived from any other being. All other creatures were created and derive their life and existence from Him. (Gen 2:7; Psalm 104:29; 30:1-12) But God is not created. He always exists; as He was, so He is and shall unchangeably always be (Psalm 90:2). The text today exposes to us the fact that Christ shares the same attribute with God, not being created but like God, exists by Himself and is one with the Father and the Holy Spirit in Trinity.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. Like Psalm 14:1, some atheists have been striving to prove that there is no God. In your own thinking, who is behind the roaring oceans, (Psalm 46:3) who set the rising and setting of the sun (Isa 45:6); who created the million stars with the smallest bigger than the earth? (Psalm 147:1, 4, 5). When were they formed and when will they expire like man-made products?

2. Gen 1 &2 and John 1:1-3 reveal the creation of all things in heaven and on earth by God through His word, Jesus Christ. In your own thinking, can/should we ask who created God? Psalm 90:1-2; Proverb 8:25-26.

3. From the previous two questions, how can you explain the fact that Jesus Christ is self-existent? John 5:26.

4. How do some religions perceive Jesus Christ today? Ref: Isa 49:7; Mark 6:3.

CONCLUSION: The only Being who was never created but who created all things is God. Though the fool says there is no God; let that kind of person prove the age of this world, who created it and when it will expire. Therefore, since Jesus Christ is one in nature and attributes with God, He was never created. He is without beginning and end. He is the self-sufficient and self-existent One.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Jesus Christ: begotten not made.

MEMORY VERSE: John 5:26 “For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself”.

TOPIC: Immutability (Hebrews 13:8).

TEXT:Revelation 1:1-6; Hebrews 13:8

AIMS:

i. to explain the fact that Jesus Christ does not change in nature or existence and

ii. to reveal that the different manifestations of Christ as man and God, do not change his eternal attributes.

INTRODUCTION: “Immutability” means that somebody/something is unchangeable. While a finite being can and does change, a necessary infinite being does not. Our texts today reveals that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever and after His eternal attribute as Ancient of Days, He never changes in forms or attributes.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. In your own understanding, define the word ‘Immutability’ and relate it to Jesus Christ? Hebrews 13:8.

2. With reference to John 1:1-3, 14, explain the fact that the same Word of God at creation was incarnated as man on earth.

3. How can you differentiate Christ from other creatures including human beings in terms of nature and time? John 8:58 Rev 1:4-5.

4. How can you differentiate The Lord Jesus Christ from any self-acclaimed Jesus or messiah of our generation? Acts 5:34-39.

CONCLUSION: As the only begotten Son of God the Father, Jesus Christ is the same with the Father at creation, He was incarnated in human form to die for our sins and has ascended into heaven to continue His eternal reign as the King of kings with God the father.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Jesus Christ is the same in the beginning, now and forever!

TOPIC:The Way and the Truth

TEXTS:Isaiah 35:8; John. 14:6; Revelation. 3:7 Titus 1:1-2

AIMS:

i. to show the superiority of the true grace in Christ,

ii. to justify Christ’s mission as the truth above the laws of Moses and

iii. to reveal the Truth of Christ as the only way to salvation

INTRODUCTION: When Prophet Isaiah prophesied concerning a highway in Isaiah 35:4-8 he was referring to the coming Messiah through whom alone they and all others can have access to God by obeying His instructions, imitating His example, and depending on His merits. He is the leader in the road, the guide to the wanderers, the teacher of the ignorant, and the example to all.

Titus 1:2 connotes that God cannot lie. It is not that God chooses not to lie, but that He cannot; because it goes against his nature. To claim that God is truth means that God’s essence is sheer truth and possesses no falsehood. John 14:6 proves that Jesus holds this attribute, therefore, He is Truth personified. (Rev 3:7)

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. How do you understand Jesus Christ to be The way and the Truth? Matt 1:21; Acts 4:12; 10:43

2. According to Peter’s confession in John 6:68, how can you present Jesus Christ as the only way and Truth to salvation? John 3;17;Jn 10:11-13; 17-18; Tit 2:13-14; 1Jn 2:1.

3. How can you prove the superiority of Jesus Christ above all who may profess to be the way to salvation? Deut 4:4; John 1:17; 1Tim 2:5-6; Acts 5:34-39.

4. From your experience, explain how some preachers either with the Bible or otherwise are claiming to be the way to salvation in our generation. How can Christians overcome of these false saviours? Luke 21:8; Eph 5:5-8

CONCLUSION: The Old Testament attests to God showing His will and commands through His prophets and priests. However, in the New Testament, He has revealed Himself finally and Supremely in Jesus Christ as the Only True way by which we can enter into His kingdom.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Jesus Christ: The only key to eternal life.

TOPIC: Love

TEXTS:John 15:13; Ephesians 5:2; 1John 3:16;

AIMS:

i. to explain or show the nature of the love of Christ for mankind and

ii. to teach how Christians should appraise the love of Christ.

INTRODUCTION: God by nature is Omni-benevolent; that is to say, He is a loving God. In God, there is no hate, as He Himself is absolute love. The peak of God’s love for mankind is in sending His only begotten Son to die for the sins of the world(John 3:16). However, it is one thing to send, it is another thing for the one sent to fulfil the mission. The love of Christ for the whole world is therefore, manifested in obeying God to laying down His glory in heaven and humbly coming to the world in human form to redeem it from sin. The question before us today is, should the love of Christ to die for our sins be in vain for anybody?

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. How did God show His love for mankind in Gen 1:26; 9:9-11; Rom 5:8; 1John 4:9?

2. From these passages: John 15;13; Rom 15:3; Phil 2:5-8; Heb 1:3; 2:14 explain how Jesus Christ demonstrated His love for mankind.

3. What is the vital difference between the teachings of Christ and other world religions? John14:15, 23, 27; 15:12-13; Rom 12:9; 1Jn 4:7.

4. How should Christians respond to the love of Christ? Matt 12:50; John 15:12, 14

CONCLUSION: The maximum price anyone can pay for another is to die for the sake of that person. This has never done, and if it has ever done, it has been by the wishes and consent of the victim. Therefore, the obedience, life and death of Christ on the cross have clearly revealed to us one who possesses true and unequal love.

TOPIC: Holiness

TEXTS: Luke 1: 35; John 4:34; 1Peter 2:21-22.

AIM: To understand the source of holiness and its manifestation through Christ to man

INTRODUCTION:

Holiness is an attribute of God and the ordained code for Christian living. It is purity, moral and ethical wholeness or perfection. Being one with God, Jesus was the personification of holiness and He reinforced God’s demands for holiness by insisting that His disciples have a higher quality and degree of righteousness than that of the Pharisees and the Scribes (Matt. 5: 20). How then can we learn from the obedience of Christ and apply the same as His followers of Christ in order to make a difference in the world?

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. Who is the source of holiness and how do we as believers show it to the World?

Lev. 19: 2; Luke 1: 35; 2Cor. 5: 21; Heb. 7: 26-27

2. How did Jesus demonstrate His holiness while He was physically on earth?

Matt. 4: 4-11; John 4:34; 5:20; 1 Pet. 2: 21-22

3. From your social experience, mention some of the ways ‘Christians’ display unholy behaviour and attitudes.

4. With reference to 1 Pet. 1: 15-16 how should the Christians stay away from unholy practices? 1Cor 5:9; 6:14-18; 10:21; 2 Tim. 4: 2-5.

CONCLUSION: To be pure means to be single-minded like a shining light (Eph. 5: 8)-free from the civil war of a divided self, being free from falsehood, hypocrisy, or pretence. Christians are called upon to obey God’s word in its totality by living pure lives that set standards above the ungodly world’s standards.

i. to establish the pre-existence of Jesus with the Triune God and

ii. to reveal Jesus as the only way for man’s eternity with God

INTRODUCTION: God is eternal. He has no beginning and no end. The Messiah holds the same eternal attribute. Prophet Micah said of the coming Messiah that “Bethlehem Ephrathah, you are small among the clans of Judah; one will come from you to be ruler over Israel for me. His origin is from antiquity, from ancient times” (Micah 5:2) and the reign of His kingdom, there will be no end. (Isa 9:6-7)

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS

1. How do the following Scriptures testify to the existence of the triune God from eternity? Gen. 1: 1, 26; Matt 3:16-17; John 1: 1-4;

2. What are the convincing evidences of Jesus’ eternal existence? Isa 9:6-7; Dan 2:44; Micah 5:2; Matt. 2:1-2, 5-6;1 John 5:20.

3. How does a believer walk on the path of eternal life? 1Cor 15:58; Eph. 4: 4-5, 22-24; 2 Peter 3:17

4. How can we convince unbelievers that Jesus Christ is the only way to eternal life?

CONCLUSION:

Being one with God from eternity, Jesus took on the human body and nature in order to redeem mankind. Therefore, only He who has eternal qualities can guarantee eternal benefits to anyone who believes in Him.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Only the one who rules over death can give eternal life.

TOPIC: Omnipresence

TEXTS: Psalm 139:1-16; Matthew 28: 20; Ephesians 1: 22-23

AIMS:

i. to understand the scope and the nature of God’s active presence

ii. to understand the divine attribute of omnipresence in Jesus’ eternal state and

iii. how to obtain or lose the relational presence of God

INTRODUCTION:

“Omnipresence” is a theological term that refers to the unlimited nature of God or His ability to be everywhere at all times. The active presence of God, both in places and in relationships (1 Cor. 6: 19-20), is one of the chief presuppositions running through the Scripture. The Triune God is present everywhere, and there is no place without God and no place beyond Him (2 Chr. 6: 18). Jesus laid aside His Omni-presence during his time on earth, but that did not limit Him in meeting some challenging situations in the lives of His disciples (John 11: 21, 38-44). He has taken up that again divine attribute of omnipresence now in His eternal state.

STUDY GUIDE/GUESTIONS:

1. From Psalm 139:7-13, preset Three (3) different ways you can prove the Omni-presence of God.

2. How do people define the limit of God’s presence? Gen 4:3-10; Jer. 23: 23-27.

3. How can you explain the Omnipresence of Jesus Christ to an unbeliever? John 5:17, 30; 8:28; Heb. 1: 1-3.

4. How Jesus did promise His omnipresence to all believers in His name? Matt. 28: 20; John 14: 18-20; 26-27 and how is this manifesting in the believers’ lives? Acts 2:1-4; 42-43, 47; Rom 14:18.

CONCLUSION: God is neither limited to nor dependent upon any place or anyone as His universal presence encompasses all creation. Jesus reveals what God’s presence is like and His passion that was and is to have a relationship with everyone who willingly allows Him to manifest His presence to him/her.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Christ’s Omni-presence is vitally experienced by only genuine believers.

TEXTS:Matthew 9:4-5; John 2: 24-25

AIMS:

i. to discover the mysteries and magnitude of the knowledge of Jesus and

ii. to experience the acknowledgment of Jesus’ omniscience by His followers.

INTRODUCTION:

Omniscience is a theological term that refers to God’s superior universal knowledge and wisdom. God knows everything from eternity past to eternity future simultaneously without consulting anyone for knowledge or understanding. (Psalm. 139: 1-6) The Texts today reveal Jesus Christ as omniscient. This study shall further show how the disciples acknowledged the omniscience of Jesus Christ.

STUDY GUIDE:

1. Explain the word “Omni-science” and what we mean when we say God is Omniscient? Psalm. 139: 1-6; 147: 4-5; Isa. 40:26; Matt. 10: 30?

2. How did Jesus manifest the omniscience of God on earth? Matt 9:4-5; Mark 2:8; John 2:24-25; 6:64.

3. What are the mysteries and magnitude of the omniscience of Jesus? John 4: 16-19, 28-29; 10: 14-16.

4. In what ways did the early Apostles acknowledge the omniscience of Jesus Christ? John 16:30; Acts 1: 24-25; 1 Cor. 4: 5.

CONCLUSION: No human being on earth had ever displayed the omniscience of God as our Lord Jesus Christ who knows all things from the beginning of the age till the end of the age. To Him we should commit our souls and spirits.

AIMS:

i. to learn that Jesus share the same all powerful nature with God and

ii. to shows Jesus’ empowerment of His followers.

INTRODUCTION:

“Omnipotence” is a theological term that refers to the all-encompassing power of God. It describes God as having virtually unlimited authority or influence. From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible reveals Jesus Christ as sharing omnipotence with God. Our study shall further expose the universal omnipotence of our Lord Jesus Christ.

He reveals in the Bible that He is all-powerful and in the final sense is the ruler of nature, history and nations as nations are as a drop in a bucket and counted as small dust on the balance (Isa. 40: 15). He is the all-powerful Lord who has created all things and sustains them by the Word of His power (Gen. 1:1-3; Heb. 1: 3). Yet He has so fashioned human beings that He graciously appeals to them to return to Him in obedience because He holds them responsible for their thoughts and actions.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. Describe the oneness of God’s omnipotence with Jesus Christ in John 1:1-4; Phil 2:9-11; Heb 1:3; compare Gen 1:3; Psalm 3:6.

2. What are some of the different situations in which Jesus demonstrated His omnipotence in His earthly ministry? Acts 10: 38; John 2: 7-9; Mark 5:1-13; Luke 8:43-44

3. How has Jesus empowered His disciples and the Christians in our generation for the continuation of His ministry? Luke 9: 1-2; Matt 28;18; Mark 16:17-18; Acts 1: 8; 19:13-17.

4. What can possibly limit the operations of Christ’ omnipotence in our Christian lives? Isa. 59: 1-2; Matt. 13:58; 17: 14-20.

CONCLUSION: The omnipotence of Jesus Christ was totally manifested in His conquering of death in order to open the gate of salvation to all who believe in Him. The climax of His omnipotence is in judging the whole world; both great and small.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: No one can be more powerful than Jesus Christ the conqueror of death

THEME: IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST

SUB-THEME: The Divinity of Christ (1)

TOPIC: His Conception

TEXTS: Matthew 1:18-25; Luke 1:26-35

AIMS:

i. to discover some prophecies concerning Christ’s unique conception that is different from natural conception

ii. to learn from the chastity of the Virgin Mary and

iii. to teach the importance of chastity to the Christian family

INTRODUCTION:

A virgin is someone who has never engaged in sexual intercourse. The conception of Jesus describes how the Saviour was conceived in the womb of the young Virgin Mary through the miraculous work of the Holy Spirit and without Mary having sexual intercourse with any man. God chose this mystery, which is beyond human understanding to bring His Son into the world (Matt.1: 18; Luke 1:34-35).

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. What are some biblical evidences of the Virgin’s conception of Jesus Christ? Isaiah 7:14;

2. Differentiate between natural human conception and the divine conception of Jesus Christ. Gen 4:1, 17, 25; 16: 4; Matt. 1: 18-19, 24-25; Luke 1:26-35.

3. What does the Bible teaches about chastity of men and virgins? Deut 22:20-29; Acts 15:20; 21:25; 1Cor 6:18; 7:2 1Thess 4:3.

4. What lessons Christians draw from Mary’s state at the visit of the Angel? Isaiah 1:16; 2Tim 2:20-21; Jam 4:8;

5. What are the consequences of sexual immorality? Eph 5:5; Jude 1:7; Rev 2:22; 21:8.

CONCLUSION: The supernatural conception of our Lord Jesus Christ is a proof of His pureness and holiness from human inheritance of Adam’s sinful nature. He has to come through a woman who has had no sexual intercourse with any man; to come to the world and fulfil the work of redemption.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Christ’s mysterious birth by a woman was without a man’s seed.

MEMORY VERSE: Matthew 1:23 "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us."

THEME: IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST

SUB-THEME:Divine nature of Christ (2)

TOPIC:His Nativity

TEXTS:Isaiah 7:14; Luke 2:1-18; Matthew 2:9-12

AIMS:

i. to identify the difference between the birth of Christ and human birth and

ii. to expose the significance of Christ’s birth to the whole world.

INTRODUCTION: Beginning from the prophecy of Isaiah, the birth of a child by a virgin had been a mystery to generations. Not only was the child be born of a virgin, but he would be Immanuel, (God dwelling among His people). The visit of Angel Gabriel and the various happenings at His birth exposed a clear difference between the customary manner of human birth and that of ‘God with man’.

Today’s studies will x-ray some of these differences and the importance of Christ’s birth to the whole world.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. Based on today’s texts, describe some of the uncommon things that differentiate Jesus’ birth from human birth.

2. How can you differentiate the annunciation of Jesus Christ to Virgin Mary with that of human conception? Gen 4:1; 1Sam 1:19; Luke 1:30-34

3. How does the angel’s visit to the shepherds (Luke 2:8-11) confirm the birth of the Messiah? Isa 9:6; Luke 1:41-44;John 12:34

4. The birth of Christ heralded joy and peace to the earth (Luke 2:8-14). Justify this with evidence from following Bible passages. Luke 4:18-19; John 14:27; Rom 5:1; Eph 2:14.

5. From your personal understanding, how can you explain the phrase “life without Christ is in crisis”

CONCLUSION: God fulfils all his promises to the world, the highest and greatest of which is Jesus Christ, born of a virgin for our redemption. Those who receive him have eternal peace and whoever rejects Him will end up with in eternal condemnation.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: With Christ is peace, without Christ is crisis.

MEMORY VERSE: Isaiah 9:6 “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace”.

THEME: IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST

SUB-THEME: The Divinity of Christ (3)

TOPIC:His Resurrection

TEXTS: Matthew 28:1-20; Acts 4:8-11

AIMS:

i. to establish the truth or veracity of Jesus’ resurrection

ii. to expose the earliest failed plot to pervert the fact of Jesus’ resurrection and

iii. to teach the significance of Christ’s resurrection to all Christians.

INTRODUCTION: The Resurrection of Jesus is the greatest supernatural event of all time. Cornelius à Lapide dares to say: "The earth, which trembled with sorrow at the Death of Christ were leaped for joy at His Resurrection." The Angel of the Lord announced the Incarnation of the Son of God and also His Resurrection from the grave. The variations in the records of Christ’s resurrection strengthen the independent witness to the essential fact that Jesus rose from the grave. However, we shall study more about whether the resurrection of Christ has any great importance to Christianity as well as whether an attempt to pervert the truth of resurrection was able to survive the test of time.

STUDY GUIDES/QUESTIONS:

1. Compare 1Cor 13:1 with the various record of Jesus’ resurrection in Matt. 28:1-6; Mark 16:1-7; Luke 24:1-6 and John 20:1-17, and justify the truth of His resurrection?

2. Narrate the earliest plot to deny the truth of Christ’s resurrection. Matt 28:11-15. Acts 3:26; 4:1-3, 15-18; 5:27-33.

3. What is the significance of Christ’s resurrection to the world? ; 1 Cor. 15:54-55; Col 2:15; 2Tim 1:10

4. How successful were the attempts to stop the proclamation of the risen Lord Jesus Christ? Acts 4:4; 5:34-42; 9:1-6; 17-22. Compare those with the contemporary persecutions.

CONCLUSION: The fact of Christ’s birth, life, death and resurrection had been threatened over the years, yet had never succeeded in preventing the truth therein. Upon these facts is the Church of Christ founded and the gate of hell and falsehood shall never prevail against it.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Christ has died, Christ is reason, Christ will come again.

MEMORY VERSE:Acts 4: 10 "Let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole”.

THEME: IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST

SUB-THEME: The Divinity of Christ (4)

TOPIC: His Ascension

TEXTS:John 3:13; Acts 1:1-11.

AIMS:

i. to teach about the ascension of Jesus Christ,

ii. to confirm Jesus Christ as the only one who died, resurrected and ascended into heaven and

iii. to explain more on the purpose of His ascension.

INTRODUCTION: At the beginning of his treatise, Saint Luke addressed Theophilus as ‘most excellent’. Luke 1:3. Theophilus might have been a Roman official who had already embraced the Christian faith or was even simply a Christian middle-class Roman citizen who gave Luke the opportunity to write a complete account of Jesus and the early Church. However, Luke’s account was to prove to the Roman government through this eminent Roman politician that the works of Jesus Christ and those of His disciples were never a subterfuge to the Roman Government. The record by Saint Luke proves beyond any doubt the authenticity of Jesus Christ’s ascension into heaven. Moreover, other Biblical passages have similarity narrated the purpose of Christ’s ascension into heaven.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. From biblical and life’s experience mention someone apart from Jesus Christ, who was dead, buried, resurrected and ascended into heaven. John 3:13

2. Who is the only person who can ascend into the heavens? Prov. 30:4; John 3:13; 6:33, 38, 62.

3. Why did Jesus Christ ascend to heaven? Rom 8:34; Eph 4:8; Col 2:15; Heb 9:24-25.

4. From today’s study, how important is Christ’s ascension to you? John 14:2-3; 26-27; 16:7; Rom 8:24; 1Jn 2:1

CONCLUSION: Only the one who descended from heaven can ascend into heaven. The ascension of Jesus Christ forever remains one of the mysterious supernatural event that signifies Him as the Lord of lords and King of kings.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Only He who descended to defeat death is able to ascend to reign forever.

MEMORY VERSE: John 3:13 "No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven”.

THEME:IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST

SUB THEME:The Supremacy of Jesus Christ over Biblical heroes (1)

TOPIC: Jesus and Adam

TEXTS:Genesis 3:15-19; 1Corinthians 15: 20-26

AIMS:

i. to identify the similarity (ies) between Jesus Christ and Adam (if any)

ii. to understand the supremacy of Jesus Christ over Adam

iii. to outline the consequences of the role of Adam on mankind

iv. to discuss the victory of Jesus Christ over all

INTRODUCTION:

Through the fall of Adam, the whole of mankind was subjected to death Gen 3:19. The sentence which went forth against Adam was against all of Adam’s descendants, and as it affected all, so it involved all in the certainty of death.

However, through Christ and by virtue of His death and resurrection, the sceptre of death has been broken, and its dominion destroyed, because ALL shall be raised up from the dead and be made alive eternally in Christ’s kingdom 1Cor 15:20-26, Rom 5:12-19

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. What is your understanding of the man Adam? Gen 1:26-27; Gen 3:9-13.

2. In what ways is Jesus different from, and superior to Adam Rom 5:12-19; 1Cor 15:20-26; Phil 2:8?

3. Discuss the effects of Adam’s disobedience and Jesus Christ’s obedience on mankind Gen 2:17; Gen 3:16-19; Rom 5:18-19; 1Cor 15:21-23; Rom 6:23; Eph 2:5-8.

CONCLUSION

We were all connected with Adam, the father of the human race, in death as the ultimate price of his disobedience. However, we are more connected by grace of salvation with Jesus Christ who obeyed even unto death to give us victory, even over death. Christians are therefore enjoined to forsake sinful living which is the height of disobedience to God.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Death came through Adam, but eternal life came through Jesus Christ.

MEMORY VERSE: Romans 5:17 “For if by the one man's offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ”.

SUB THEME: The Supremacy of Jesus Christ over Biblical heroes (2)

TOPIC: Jesus and Noah

TEXTS:Genesis 6:9-22; 1Peter 3:18-20,

AIMS:

i. to identify the similarities/differences between Jesus Christ and Noah.

ii. to understand the supremacy of Jesus Christ over Noah and

iii. understand the role of Jesus Christ and Noah in saving mankind

INTRODUCTION: When the destruction of the world loomed in the times of Noah, God favoured Noah for he was a just and perfect man living in an immoral generation Gen 6:8-9. God commanded him to build an ark for the salvation of mankind. The ark of Noah saved only eight people who were members of his household including Noah himself- Gen 7:7; Heb. 11:7. “God’s desire is to save us all; not just eight people; He gave the gift of Jesus Christ to save the world, and by His blood, draw the world back to eternal life with God -Jn 3:16.” Jesus described His second coming to be like in the days of Noah- Matt. 24:37-39.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. Discuss the reasons for the destruction of the world in Noah’s time- Gen 6:1-7

2. Jesus described His second coming to be like it was in the days of Noah-Discuss Matt. 24:37-39, 44; Luke 17:26-27.

3. Compare and contrast the work of salvation of Jesus Christ and that of Noah-Gen 7:1-7; Matt 26:28; Eph. 2:12-16; 1Pet 3:20.

4. God was grieved by what he saw in Noah’s days- Gen 6:6, in what ways do we grieve God today?- Eph. 4:17-32

CONCLUSION: As God made a covenant with Noah, so He has made a covenant with us through Jesus Christ; that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. God will never break His promises. Therefore, let us be careful about His second coming unlike the people of Noah’s time, we should daily continue to live in the hope of His second coming.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Noah’s Ark was for temporary salvation; Jesus is the way to eternal salvation

MEMORY VERSE:John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life”.

THEME:IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST

SUB THEME:The Supremacy of Jesus Christ over Biblical heroes (3)

TOPIC: Jesus and Abraham

TEXTS:Exodus 3:14, John 8:51-59

AIMS:

i. to identify the similarity(s) between Jesus Christ and Abraham

ii. to understand the supremacy of Jesus Christ over Abraham and

iii. to identify the benefits in obeying to God

INTRODUCTION: The claim of Jesus (John 8:53-59) is very revealing and multifaceted: first, that He pre-existed His human birth and was actually alive and present (as God) before Abraham; Second, that His title was ‘I AM’- which was the same title God gave himself and denotes continued existence without respect to time, as long as he is concerned.

The objection of the Jews (John 8:57) was that he was a young man- ‘’not yet fifty’’, and could not, therefore, have seen Abraham; Jesus replied that he existed before Abraham (John 8:56, 58).

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. Compare the obedience of Jesus Christ to Abraham’s-Phil 2:5-11, Gen 12:1-4, 22:9-10

2. In what ways did God, by the obedience of Jesus and Abraham, blessed mankind? Gen 12:3, John 14:6-7

3. How can you prove the supremacy of Jesus Christ over Abraham?

4. Is it possible for Christians today to practice total obedience to God just as Jesus and Abraham did?

CONCLUSION

The affirmation in John 1:1 that Jesus the Word was in the beginning with God, and was God proves that while He was a man, He had existed eternally before Abraham and was therefore superior to Abraham. Moreover, Abraham died as a father of the blessed nation, Jesus died to redeem the whole world from their sins and to reign eternally as the King of kings and Lord of lords even over Abraham.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: While Abraham died as a father of a nation, Jesus reigns eternally as the Saviour.

MEMORY VERSE: John 8:56 "Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad."

THEME:IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST

SUB THEME: The Supremacy of Jesus Christ over Biblical heroes (4)

TOPIC: Jesus and Moses

TEXTS: John 1:17; Hebrews 3: 1-11,

AIMS:

i. to examine how God, through Jesus and Moses, delivered mankind from bondage and

ii. to understand the supremacy of Jesus Christ over Moses

INTRODUCTION: Moses was a Prophet, lawgiver and the emancipator of Israel from their taskmasters, and a worker of miracles. Moses had the unique privilege of speaking to God ‘’face to face, as one speaks to a friend’’- Exod. 33:11. Jesus Christ fulfilled the Law, (Matt 5:17) performed various miracles and emancipated us from sin and death- Rom 8:2,

However, ‘’Jesus has been found worthy of greater honour than Moses.’’ (Hebrews 3:3). A greater honour than Moses means: While Moses was angry at his persecutors, Jesus prayed for His executors.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. Read John 6:30-31, 48-50, and compare Moses’ work of salvation of Israel to Jesus’ works of mankind’s redemption.

2. What is the significant of the works of Moses and Jesus on God’s people?

3. For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ- John 1:17; 7:19 Discuss.

4. How will you justify that Jesus Christ in Phil 2:5-11 is superior to Moses in Num 20:7-8,11-12? -Heb 3:3-6; 7:25-28.

CONCLUSION:

By the hand of God, Moses led Israel out of Egypt to the Promised Land, though he himself did not enter it. Jesus came by grace and power as the propitiation for our sins. He is not only the way to eternal life but reigns eternally as the King of kings.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: The eternal King is greater than any mortal leader.

MEMORY VERSE:John 1:17 “For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ”.

SUB THEME 6: The Supremacy of Jesus Christ over Biblical heroes (5)

TOPIC: Jesus and Joshua

TEXTS: Hebrews 4: 1-11

AIMS:

i. to identify the relationship between Jesus Christ and Joshua and

ii. to justify the supremacy of Jesus Christ over Joshua

iii. to discuss further on the promised land through Joshua and eternal life through Jesus Christ

INTRODUCTION: The word ‘Yeh-hoshua’ (Hebrew) and ‘lesous’ (Greek) share the same meaning i.e. “Jehovah is salvation’ but the context of their usage is quite different. Joshua was the successor of Moses in the quest to take the people of God (Israelite) to the Promised Land (Josh. 1:1-7) while Jesus Christ offered himself as a sacrifice for the redemption of the world from sin and eternal damnation (John 3: 16, Matt. 1:20-21). This study will further prove the supremacy of Jesus Christ over Joshua.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. Personally to you, who are Joshua and Jesus? State the similarity between their missions. Deut. 3:27-28; John 3:16; Rom. 5:1-2.

2. Compare the rest given by Joshua to that in Jesus Christ. Josh 23:1; Judges 1:1; Matt 11:27-30; John 14:27-28.

3. Highlight the supremacy of Jesus over Joshua during challenging situations. Josh 7:1, 24-26; Josh 24:29-30; Luke 23:33-34, 39-43; Luke 24:5-7

4. “So, I swore in my anger, they will not enter my rest” (Psalm 95:11). What are the factors that led to this statement? Num 14:20-23; Num 32:6-11. How can we avoid such comment from God? – .

CONCLUSION: Joshua settled the Israelites in Canaan as their resting place. This rest in Canaan wasn’t real; Israel had unending problems with the Canaanites. However, Jesus has a rest for all who have faith in him, an eternal rest with no more weeping, no sorrow and hardship; but endless joy in the presence of God.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT:Seek to inherit eternal life because all earth’s rest is only temporal.

MEMORY VERSE:Hebrews 4:11 “Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience”.

SUB –THEME 6: The Supremacy of Jesus Christ over Biblical heroes (6)

TOPIC: Jesus and David

TEXTS: Psalm 45:6-8; 103:19; Isaiah 9:6-7; 11:1-5.

AIMS:

i. to open up the confession of King David concerning the coming Messiah and

ii. to explain further the supremacy of Jesus kingship over that of David.

INTRODUCTION: David was king over Israel. However, he wrote of a kingdom of justice which sets forth the everlasting kingdom of Christ. (Psalm 45:6-7). The Messiah is twice called “God” and that He has been anointed by God over His “companions”. David also wrote in Psalm 102:25-27 and 103:19-presenting the future Christ in prophetic terms. These were corroborated in Revelation 11:15 and 12:10 concerning the everlasting kingdom of God and of His Christ which takes pre-eminence over the temporal earthly kingdoms.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. From 1Sam 7:10-13 and Isa 9:6-7 Explain why Jesus Christ should be born from the tribe of Judah.

2. Compare Psalm 45:6-7 with Phil 2:8-10 and confirm the supremacy of Jesus Christ over King David.

3. How are some worldly rulers mocking the King of kings? Dan 3:15; Acts 12:20-23.

4. Why is the kingdom of Christ superior to that of King David? 2Sam 7:12; 1Kings 2:1-2,10; Rev 11:15; 12:10.

CONCLUSION

It was mandatory for the Messiah to be born of a woman, therefore, God fulfilled the promise He made to King David and through Isaiah the prophet, and He sent Jesus Christ to the world through the tribe of Judah. His revelation of an anointed ruler of the heavenly Kingdom confirmed that even while on earth King, David was inspired to see a Messiah enthroned in heaven by the Lord Almighty.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Earthly thrones will expire but Jesus’ throne is from everlasting to everlasting.

MEMORY VERSE: Rev 11:15 “The seventh angel sounded, and great voices in heaven followed, saying, "The kingdom of the world has become the Kingdom of our Lord, and of his Christ. He will reign forever and ever!"

TOPIC: Jesus and the Prophets

TEXT:Genesis 49:10; John 1:45; Hebrews 1: 1- 13

AIMS:

i. to bring out various prophetic pointers to Jesus Christ as the Messiah and eternal righteous King and

ii. to show the supremacy of Jesus over the prophets

INTRODUCTION: The ministry of the prophets and that of Jesus seem so similar because thay has a link with God. The prophets were the mouth piece of God in the Old Testament; though every message sent through them pointed to the coming of the Messiah.

This study shows further on the progressive revelation of God’s word from the Old Testament to the New about the supremacy of Jesus to the Old Testament prophets.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. What were the prophets saying about Jesus Christ from the following Bible passages and how did they manifest?

a. Isa 7:14; 9:6; Matt 1:23; Rev 3:7

b. Gen 48:10; Psalm 45:6-8; Luke 1:30-33; Heb 1:8

c. Ps 68:18; Acts 1:9; Rev 19:19-20

d. Isa 9:2; 60:3; Luke 2:29-32; John 8:12; Rev 21:23-24.

e. Jer. 23:5; Micah 5:2; Matt 2:4-6; Rev 17:14; 19:16.

2. From the above, how can you confirm Jesus Christ as superior to the Prophets? Rev 5:1; 20:13-15.

CONCLUSION: While the Old Testament prophecies revealed the Messiah, Son of God as appointed by the Father to be our king and Lord, by whom also he made all things; the New Testament fulfilled the prophecies and the Apocalypse (Revelation) revealed the final judgment and eternal kingship by the Son of God as revealed by the prophets.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Prophesies have pointed at Jesus Christ as the Messiah and eternal, righteous King.

SUB THEME 6: The Supremacy of Jesus Christ over Biblical heroes (8)

TOPIC: Jesus and John the Baptist

TEXT: Matthew 3: 1-17.

AIMS:

i. to understand the ministry of John the Baptist and

ii. to highlight the supremacy and uniqueness of Jesus over John the Baptist

INTRODUCTION: John the Baptist fulfilled the prophecy of a forerunner to the Messiah. And John’s ministry was well recognized and respected by the people. They went as far as the wilderness to listen to his preaching of repentance. However, John the Baptist did not take to himself the glory that belonged to Jesus. He confessed …“the one coming after me is mightier than I …” (Matt. 3:11). Did this confession prove the supremacy of Jesus over him? This study will teach more about it.

STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

1. In your own word, explain the prophecy that brought John the Baptist into lime light. (Isaiah 40: 1 – 5; Malachi 3:1)

2. How John did describe the superiority of Jesus Christ over himself? Luke 3:15-17; Matt 3:13-14.

3. What divine qualities distinguish John the Baptist from Jesus? Matt. 3:11-12; 16-17.

4. As a people called by God to serve, what can we learn from the response of John the Baptist to the person and mission of Jesus Christ? (Gal. 6: 3; Rom. 12: 1-3; 1 Peter 5: 5-6; Phil. 2: 5-11).

CONCLUSION:

As John the Baptist fulfilled the prophecy of a forerunner, he did not take the glory to himself. He pointed people to the Messiah and not to himself. As believers endowed with many different gifts and talents, let us use them to the glory of God and as pointer to Jesus Christ, the Lord of lords and King of kings.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: An Anti-Christ presents himself as Christ but the Christians present Christ as the Saviour.
