ClASSIC CHrIStMAS

While snow is not typically in the forecast in Metro Vancouver, Carrie Thachuk, owner of The Passionate Home, was able to bring the slopes to Aldergrove with her rustic take on a classic Christmas theme. Enlisting the skills of her local pickers, Carrie unearthed a pair of vintage skis and men’s figures skates. When layered behind fresh greenery, shiny baubles and a bright red lantern, this is a truly traditional take on the holiday season.

INduStrIAl WItH A tWISt

With a front door painted a beautiful, bold red, it didn’t take a lot of effort to re-work the entryway of Courtney Van Der Zalm’s Cloverdale home into a welcoming, festive oasis. Incorporating pieces from her Fort Langley store, Livingroom, Courtney combined traditional elements such as pinecones and greenery with industrial metal baskets to create a simple yet stylish theme. Layering in a jute market bag (exclusive to her store) put the finishing touch on this festal motif.

W hat do you get when you ask five design entrepreneurs

and bloggers to style the front entrance of their homes for the holidays? A wonderfully diverse illustration of the spirit of the season. From a rustic lodge theme complete with antlers and ski poles to the beautifully bright colours of a candy cane, each style is unique and easier to achieve than you may imagine.

ruStIC lodge (previous page)

Pam Ratzlaff and Laurel Edwards, the dynamic blogging duo behind the popular site, sugarplumsisters.com, transformed the front entry of Pam’s home in Abbotsford into a welcoming portico. By calling on the resources of Spruce Vintage Rentals, layering in a few of their own pieces, and adding in a DIY project or two, the pair have achieved a rustic luxe style that compliments their family-centred farm life perfectly.

The carpet was the jumping off point for this design by Jodi Bueckert of Simply Inspired Design. Challenged with creating a theme using pieces found only at HomeSense, Jodi chose a route that married colour with contemporary elements.

Juxtaposed against the dark, moody door, the pinks and blues in the carpet jump out and welcome visitors. A console table was repurposed for outdoors and features a classic vignette. Contrasting items were paired together; the simple wreath and a marble vase holding a collection of chestnuts along with a traditional nativity scene, create an unexpected and charming entrance.

FruitfulHOLIDAY

A

A traditional Colonial Williamsburg style of decorating for the holidays involves using fruit in swags, topiaries and wreaths, commonly referred to as a della Robbia.

Try dressing your mantels and front entryways with an apple topiary and bring this classic style to your home this holiday season.

To finish it off, take apart a small grape vine wreath and run the stems around your topiary.

Try making topiaries in different sizes or one with green apples and the other all red. The Christmas tree shape of these della Robbia’s look amazing displayed on a mantel. If you want to add a bit of sparkle, treat the evergreen bundles with a little glitter spray.

Create small bundles of evergreen material such

as holly, boxwood, cedar trimmings and magnolia

leaves using greens picks - small wooden

stakes with a wire found at craft stores. Stick these into the gaps

between the apples to fill out your topiary.

Secure a Styrofoam cone into a favourite pot and cover with moss using twine to hold it in place. Use bamboo skewers cut in 3” and 4” lengths to stick your apples into the cone, working in a spiral fashion from the base to the top of your form.

ARE WE CONDEMNING OUR CHILDREN TO A FUTURE OF PAIN, DYSFUNCTION AND SNORING OR SLEEP APNEA – A POTENTIAL LIFE THREATENING CONDITION?In the last several years, much information has come to light regarding the role of jaw orthopaedics in relationship to head and neck pain, upper airway obstruction (UAO), and damage to the teeth and cervical spine. Poor orthopaedic development of the jaws is something that occurs in early childhood and should be diagnosed no later than at eight years old.

crooked teeth, uneven open bite

deep bite, cannot see lower teeth

WHY ARE THERE SO MANY CROOKED TEETH? One of the most obvious, and common, signs of poor orthopaedic jaw development is crooked, or crowded teeth. Basically, the growth of the jaw has been restricted to less that the individual’s genetic potential.

According to Dr. D. H. Enlow, the father of growth research, it is breathing patterns and the function of the tongue that are critical in stimulating the appropriate amount of jaw growth so that there is enough room to fit all of the teeth in. Poor breathing patterns, like mouth breathing, leads to poor tongue posture. This leads to small, underdeveloped jaws, which in turn leads to crooked teeth.

Remember, the genetic code for the human being is not for us to have crooked teeth. It is the environmental influences of the industrialized world that are interfering with our breathing patterns and, thereby, our growth and development.

WHAT CAN BE DONE TO MAKE SURE MY CHILD IS DEVELOPING PROPERLY? The most important thing for a parent to do is observe. Have a look at your children’s teeth and jaws. Do they have crooked teeth or a bite issue such as over-bite or deep-bite? Is the posture correct or is there a forward head posture? And, most importantly is your child a mouth-breather, tooth grinder, or gasping for air when sleeping? Do they fall asleep during a short ride in the car? These are all signs that a major health problem may be developing.

If you have any concerns, see a dentist who is trained to recognize and treat these complicated developmental issues. Straightening the teeth alone is not enough to resolve pathological growth and development. Early intervention is the key to guiding healthy growth. For some of the more serious health risks, it is too late to wait for the teenage or adult years when all of the adult teeth are in place.

Dr. Hill offers complimentary consultations for the assessment of childhood growth and development.

squamish

No Toque Required

You know it. You’ve probably driven by on your way up the Sea to Sky corridor while

marveling at the beauty of the mountainous terrain that greets you. You may even think it's only for those toque-wearing, Stawamus Chief climbing folks. In my recent West Coast Wandering I turned off the highway to spend some time in Squamish, a community with a deep First Nations culture and rich with the best Mother Nature can offer.

In exploring the region, I am the first to admit I won’t be climbing the Chief any time soon. So what does this lovely town have to offer if you don’t fall into the avid outdoorsman category? With the recent opening of the Sea to Sky Gondola, visitors can take the 10 minute ride 885 metres above sea level to marvel at the beauty of the Howe Sound. While there was no snow during our stay, visitors are invited to snowshoe the trails or walk the Sky Pilot suspension bridge through the season — some terrific options for families with access to eight different trails accessible to a range of ability. My favourite part — Sea to Sky Gondola allows dogs to hike up with their humans and ride down in the gondola with their Buster the Dog pass. Be sure to read up on their policy and download the pass from their website.

From the gondola we went to explore the shops in downtown and spent some time poking about the independent businesses that make up part of the fabric of Squamish. Be sure to check out the new XOCO Westcoast Chocolate for decadent treats and Stock Home Design at Studio 101 for a peek at their local artwork and décor pieces.

While wandering the shops, the outdoors continued to beckon. We joined Paula from Squamish Adventure to head off to visit Cowboy Jim at his rustic ranch, Diamond Head Outfitters. Offering year-round horseback riding, this isn’t your typical nose-to-tail trail riding experience. Jim and his guides tailor each experience to the needs and comfort of their guests. His connection to the Squamish Valley and his horses was evident and I look forward to returning to experience the Valley through his eyes.

The Squamish/Brakendale area has one of North America’s largest populations of wintering bald eagles and there are many

ways to observe them. From November to January, volunteers through the Squamish Eagle Watch Interpreter Program are available to visitors at Eagle Run Park (off Government Street) to share prime viewing spots and information about the majestic birds. If you would rather float than stroll to watch the eagles, be sure to check out Sunwolf’s float tour.

After all that fresh air we were thirsty and hungry. Here are my picks for the foodies:

Be sure to bundle up and hit Fergies for breakfast. You can hear the Cheakamus River as you sit under the heaters to enjoy your bottomless morning coffee. Don’t let the location fool you, for lunch or dinner be sure to check out Pepe and Gringo’s — seriously, some of the best food in town and known to the locals as the place to go for butter chicken.

Also worth a stop, Howe Sound Brewing. Take time to enjoy a bite in their pub

where they have been brewing beer in their traditional brewery setup at the end of Cleveland Avenue since 1996. With a diverse and seasonal line-up, their award winning ales are best enjoyed in their natural habitat. I think I enjoyed the story behind each label almost as much as the beer I tasted.

While the trip is not much more than 90 minutes, making a day trip easy, the options for where to stay in Squamish are plenty. Executive Suites offer great views, private balconies, in-suite laundry facilities, in-suite kitchens, complimentary wifi and terrific staff. If you are looking for something a little more cabin-like and within walking distance from a great breakfast, Sunwolf offers river-side cabins and cottages nestled in the trees on their scenic acreage.

I love the west coast. We live in a beautiful part of the world and Squamish is worth more than just a quick glance.

Here are some tips for your next trip to the Howe Sound fjord:

• Toques optional. Quintessentially Canadian, I would suggest you pack comfortable walking shoes and waterproof layers. Even if you aren’t an outdoorsy person, it is hard to ignore the calling of Mother Nature.

• Eat where the locals eat. We enjoyed great food at a number of spots including Zephyers and the Water Shed Grill.

• Take a chance. Try something different. From horseback riding to flying. If you would rather take in the sights from the air, Sea to Sky Air offer daily scenic tours of the area; truly providing a bird’s eye view.

• Check out Squamish Adventure. If you aren’t quite sure where to start the team at Squamish Adventure will help. They also have a great app with loads of local information, maps, and recommendations.

When our owner, Maureen Spahr’s, grandson developed psoriasis as a toddler, she knew she needed to do something to help him and others suffering from mild to severe skin conditions and body image concerns.

In an industry that is not currently regulated and has no requirements for technicians to be trained or licensed, Maureen set out to be different. After doing a year of extensive research

about the industry and machine options, she completed a six month intensive training course to earn her

certification as an Advanced Dermal Skin Care and Medical Laser Technician as well as a Laser

Safety Officer. Her training took place at the only accredited Laser School in Canada where they

have pioneered cosmetic training across the country. “Just because there is a certificate on a technician’s wall doesn’t mean they were properly trained. Be sure to ask if they were

certified by a Laser School or by the company selling them the machine,” notes Maureen.

Advanced training is not the only thing that sets us apart. Determined to be approachable for more

people, Maureen selected platforms (machine/programs) that offer maximum results at a fraction

of the cost typically associated with these treatments. Added to that is our equal payment plan where your customized treatment package can be paid for over a period of several months, allowing you to get the results you desire without the crippling cost.

Our clinic offers treatments for men, women and teens for a variety of concerns including:

love cocktail parties! It’s so much fun getting dressed up and having your

besties over for elegant appetizers, fun cocktails, and champagne, celebrating the holidays together. Between choosing the right outfit and decorating your space, you could easily get overwhelmed with too many complicated dishes. Why not make something simple, yet glittery and pretty, to serve at your next soirée?

These Sparkling Cranberry appetizers are beautiful, elegant, and tasty. The cranberries pop with sugar-coated tartness, enveloped by creamy brie. A basil leaf adds just a touch of savoury spiciness to balance the sweetness, and the tiny hint of raspberry jam holds it all together. Serve these with a glass of pink bubbles to complete the sparkle effect!
