From an idea to a world brand. In 1926, a young engineer by the name of Andreas Stihl set out to simplify the strenuous work in the woods where axes and cross-cut saws were the tools of the trade. Today, he is known as the “father of the chain saw” and the company that bears his name celebrates its 90th year in business.

Andreas Stihl, from the very beginning, believed that customer service must not end with the purchase; it had to be available throughout the product’s life. This meant working in close cooperation with servicing dealers who could provide technical expertise when required. Today, this philosophy remains a core foundation of the business. STIHL products are sold and serviced by more than 40,000 qualified retailers worldwide. Our products are not sold in a box or at a big-box retailer; they are set up, serviced and come with personalized instruction on their safe use. This is the added value that comes with every STIHL machine!

Many of Andreas Stihl’s patents have become standard features on all brands of chain saws today. With an expertise in two-cycle engine technology, the product line grew to include grass trimmers and brushcutters, hedge trimmers, handheld and backpack blowers, cement saws and many special application tools. The company has grown steadily throughout the century and today has revenues in excess of $4 billion Canadian dollars and employs more than 14,000 people throughout the world.

It was in the late 1960s when Andreas Stihl decided to set up wholly owned subsidiaries in the world’s largest markets, believing it was possible to sell more than the independent importers and achieve a greater share of the market. STIHL Limited, with a head office in London, Ontario, was established in 1981; hence, we celebrate an anniversary also, our 35th year in business.

Today, the STIHL name is recognized throughout the world. We have become, here in North America, the #1 selling brand of handheld outdoor power equipment.* This has been made possible by offering products of uncompromising quality, partnering exclusively with servicing dealers (the true experts in our business) and having the benefit of a customer base that has remained incredibly loyal over the years.

Thank you for your business!

SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE WITH PREMIUM QUALITY

IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCESTIHL 4-MIX™ engine High performance, low fuel consumption: The 1.4 kW STIHL 4-MIX™ engine combines the advantages of two-stroke and four-stroke engines - it’s fuel-efficient and smooth running, but is also incredibly powerful and delivers plenty of torque.

Long-life air filter systemStays clean, even when things get dirty: The long-life air filter system and a series of special components integrated into the carburetor work to reliably protect the engine, so it only requires infrequent cleaning.

GREAT HANDLINGMulti-function handleEverything at your fingertips: All the engine controls are integrated into the left handle, enabling the user to operate the earth auger with their fingers. Their hands stay in the working position while they operate the controls.

Vibration-dampening frameSteady as she goes: The vibration-dampening frame ensures a significant reduction in vibrations. This makes the tool less tiring to operate, particularly during long periods of drilling or large-scale planting projects.

Large support cushionAlways by your side: The large support cushion rests against the user’s body or leg during drilling, allowing the auger to be precisely and smoothly guided through the ground.

Versatile drilling toolsSTIHL offers a wide variety of drilling tools, so you’ll be well prepared for all kinds of jobs.

EFFECTIVE PROTECTIONSTIHL Quickstop® drill brakesSafety first: The STIHL Quickstop® drill brake with release lever immediately stops the auger if it becomes jammed in ground and the user activates the release lever with their thigh. It also acts as a reverse rotation lock – jammed auger bits can simply be removed manually.

PUSH ON THROUGH:

THE STIHL BT 130

Rules the earth: The STIHL BT 130 earth auger bores quickly and powerfully into the ground, thanks to its fuel-efficient 4-MIX™ engine. Equally as impressive are its vibration-dampening frame, multi-function handle, large comfort cushion and the unique

STIHL Quickstop® drill brake, all of which boost user comfort and make the tool easy to operate. The BT 130 is the ideal tool when drilling holes for fence posts, plants and point fondations.

THE BENEFITS OF THE BT 130

BT 130 AUGER

PLENTY OF POWER WITH EVERY TURN.

Those of us in the green infrastructure industry are in business not just to make money, but to consciously make our environment a more beautiful and healthy place to live. In going about our daily business we genuinely care about the services we provide. The demand for our services has increased considerably as more people find themselves with less time to do the activities they are willing to pay us to provide. For this reason, we must care about how creative, efficient and safely we conduct our work so our clients receive the best service we can provide.

One of the ways we can ensure top notch service is by caring about the quality of training and education that is provided to our staff. Not to care about this is really not an option, since failure to train and educate results in poor quality workmanship, increased risk of injury and erosion of profit margins. Sending crews and workers out to the jobsite without hazard awareness and hands on training is not only costly and dangerous, it is against the law.

We are very fortunate in Ontario and Canada for that matter, that we have excellent training institutions that support our parks, construction and landscape sector. Many of our colleges are offering certification courses, as do provincial associations like Landscape Ontario, International Society of Arboriculture and Ontario Parks Association, to name a few. These organizations are providing excellent training and mentorship, and truly care about skills development, thus raising the bar of professionalism in our industry.

Another major component of caring about what we do revolves around the equipment choices we make. There are many aspects that need to be considered when making wise equipment purchases.• Is it readily available and can it be serviced locally?• Has it been industry tested over time?• Does it meet or exceed performance and environmental emission standards?• Is it durable and user friendly?• Does it have all the required safety features?• Is it affordable and reliable?• Is a large part of the industry using this brand?

If the answer is yes to all the above then the manufacturer you have chosen cares about their product and there is a good chance you are making a very sound investment.

As we go about our business whether it be winter, spring, summer or fall, there are a number of government ministries that care about what we do. The Ministry of Environment cares about how we treat our green infrastructure so we don’t lose our forests, or pollute our lakes, ponds and rivers. And of course they care about the emissions from our equipment. The Ministry of Transportation cares about our trucks and trailers, ensuring they are loaded properly and maintained to an appropriate standard or else we find ourselves with hefty fines and suspensions. The Ministry of Health cares about how we protect ourselves from things like Lyme disease, which is carried by the black legged ticks, or West Nile carried by mosquitoes or Giant Hogweed whose sap can

cause severe burns. And of course let us not forget how much the Ministry of Labour cares about how we treat, train and prepare our workers for the tasks at hand. All these ministries care about our safety and our compliance with the law, which is in our best interest.

And last but not least, much of this caring about what we do is prompted by the fact that our clients (homeowners, businesses, churches, schools, cottage owners, farmers, hospitals, colleges, universities, cemeteries, sports complexes, golf courses and parks) all care about how their properties are maintained.

Once we take a serious look at all that we do, it becomes clear that there are many stakeholders who care about, and have an investment in how our services are delivered. What we should hope to achieve through our efforts on a daily basis is to make it so the lawyers and adjudicators, who also care, are not kept busy as a result of our activities.

We have reason to be excited about the future of our parks and open spaces given the fact that the current

provincial government, as well as large cities like Toronto, have identified within their strategic plans an acknowledgement of green infrastructure, which will open the door to a greater understanding and appreciation of what it takes to maintain one of our most valuable resources.

Thanks and congratulations to each of you who do your part to make our communities a much better place to live, and to the whole team at STIHL for continuing to see the value in providing durable, efficient, innovative and affordable tools so we can continue doing our jobs of Protecting Tomorrow Today®.

Until next time, take pride in what you do, and do it safely.

Are you confused? STIHL uses various acronyms and registered trademarks to identify models and technologies which can be somewhat confusing. Two of those technologies share a very similar name but are quite different in terms of design; the 2-MIX and 4-MIX™ engine.

2-MIX, also known as “stratified scavenging” or “stratified charge” is a relatively new technology that produces 20-30% less emissions by forcing the engine to burn “all of the fuel” or almost all the fuel as compared to older engines, which only burned “most of the fuel”. A stratified engine cleans up emissions by pushing out the spent exhaust gas produced in the combustion process with air as opposed to air/fuel/oil. The incoming charge from the carburetor is split into two zones; hence the name 2-MIX. One has air/fuel/oil in it and the other is strictly fresh air. We keep those two zones separate and create a layer of fresh air over top of the air/fuel/oil mixture to help in the scavenging process (the act of evacuating exhaust gases) out of the combustion chamber. In years past, we didn’t employ this technology and an air/fuel/oil mixture was used in the scavenging process resulting in unburnt fuel exiting the exhaust system.

The term 4-MIX™, actually refers to a four cycle engine which utilizes a valve train like many other conventional four cycle engines. The primary difference with our 4-MIX™ four cycle engine is the fact that we use mixed fuel to keep it lubricated, hence the name 4-MIX™. We lubricate our 4-MIX™ engines with a 50:1 mix of fuel and oil like our two cycle engines. The reason we do this is so we can operate this engine in any configuration without it starving for oil, like a conventional four cycle engine would. The other benefit to this design is that it is very fuel efficient and emissions friendly, boasting some of the lowest emissions figures in our entire product line-up.

Hopefully this clears up the confusion surrounding some of our model names and technologies. Regardless of which acronym or registered trademark being used by STIHL, know that it represents cutting edge technology and ensures that STIHL equipment remains an industry leader when it comes to design and performance.

After just one charge, the STIHL AR 900 backpack battery gives the blower enough power to work for long periods of time and the belt system ensures comfort. The robust housing gives it a particularly long service life. Electricut is an electric lawn care business in its first official year of operation. Executing the idea for this all-electric lawn care company wouldn’t be possible without STIHL’s line of commercial battery-powered products. The lawn care/landscaping business tends to be very demanding on both the operator and the equipment and after using STIHL’s battery-powered products for a full season, I can confidently say that they are up to the task to get the job done.

Having previously worked with many different types of small engines on trimmers, blowers, lawn mowers, etc., it truly is a world of difference being able to just stick in a battery, push a button and go. No messing around with pull cords, mixed gas, spills, starters, filters, the list goes on.

To those who worry about running out of charge, with the AR 900 backpack battery, I have yet to run out of charge in a day. Just don’t forget to charge at night!

The best thing about electric equipment is that they are clean, quiet and are very efficient. With no gas or oil (except chain saw bar oil), I can safely and cleanly transport the equipment in the cab of my truck if necessary. Not only that, but the equipment can be positioned any which way to make it fit without worrying about anything leaking out all over the place.

This past summer, I was at a job on an embankment leading down to Lake Huron. Many of the residents along the lake like to have their banks trimmed to allow them a view of the water. Using both the battery-powered chain saw (MSA 200) and the pole pruner (HTA 85), I was easily able to take instructions from the homeowner of where and what to cut without having to constantly shut off loud, idling saws. This made it quick and easy to communicate exactly what the customer wanted and allowed a higher level of service. Situations such as this have arisen many times throughout the season.

It is no secret that electric motors are hugely more efficient than their combustion engine counterparts, and when idling, electric motors are literally infinitely more efficient. Think of how much energy is wasted with idling equipment. Why not only use the energy when it is needed? Electric equipment allows this to be a reality.

With heavy investment in battery technology from companies like STIHL, among many others, I think we are currently witnessing a tipping point of the price/performance ratio between gasoline vs. battery-powered products. As batteries continue to get smaller and more energy dense, and the war on fossil fuels wages, it would seem battery- electric equipment has nowhere to go but up!

Hall’s Masonry & Forming by Dylan HallI am a masonry contractor and have many different STIHL cut-off saws. We bought a few of the TSA 230s and have found them really helpful to our fleet. They are great for indoor work and are extremely lightweight, and great for all kinds of usage. We use them right up on the scaffolding. The fast charging system ensures that you always have a battery charged up, as it only takes 30 minutes to fully charge. Another benefit is you don’t have employees pulling out the pull cords, putting the wrong gas in, and you’re not running out of gas or oil. We will be purchasing more of these saws in the future, as they are the future of cut-off saws. I fully recommend this product.www.hallsmasonaryandforming.com

Have you been frustrated by trying to cut with a dull chain?

Have you sharpened a chain and been unsatisfied with the results?

This short article will serve as a guide to help you sharpen your own chains so they cut like they did when they were new. It is possible to make an old dulled chain perform as well as it did when it was brand new. In order to sharpen a chain two files are needed; a flat file and a round file. A chain saw cuts by chiseling wood out of a kerf created by the left and right hand side plate cutters. When a saw stops cutting well, it is because these cutter parts of the tooth have become dulled or blunted and need sharpening. A guide is also an important and necessary sharpening component. File guides simply help ensure that we are getting the filing angles set by the manufacturer back to their original after being dulled or blunted.

The first thing to consider in keeping your chain sharp is prevention. When someone dulls a chain it is often from cutting into the ground, known as ‘grounding’ the saw. Keep your saw chain away from abrasive materials like sand, asphalt, gravel, concrete, nails, metal, tin, drywall or charcoal. A chain saw chain will keep its edge for many cuts, days or even weeks if you are only cutting wood that is free from abrasives.

It is best to hold your chain saw firmly with both hands at all times and use your chain brake when not cutting and during starts. Use good posture and stay in a strong upright stance, when cutting low to the ground, remember to bend at your knees rather than bending over at your waist and straining your back. By using both hands and maintaining good posture and positioning you can avoid accidentally ‘grounding’ your saw. Finally, wear all necessary personal protective equipment; this includes safety glasses, chaps, helmet, gloves and work boots.

A good B.C. logger friend of mine and Arboriculture instructor always tells our students; “sharpen your chain to keep it sharp, not to make it sharp”. What Kyle means is that it is much easier to sharpen a chain that is only slightly damaged or dull, than to sharpen one that has been continually run after being initially dulled. When a chain saw is operated dull and forced to cut, it causes more wear and deteriorates other parts of the saw as well. It is generally quite obvious or noticeable when your chain is getting dull. When you notice this happening then it is time to stop and sharpen.

The biggest mistake I see made by people sharpening chain is not using guides. Anyone can sharpen a chain very well if they use a quality guide. Your local STIHL

Dealer has a selection of guides. There is one model in particular that I have found makes sharpening fast and easy. This sharpener requires no power source and has simple instructions etched right into the handles so you’ll never lose them. In addition, the guide itself acts as a storage case and protects your files from damage when not in use.

Ask for the STIHL 2-in-1 File Holder. This new system allows you to sharpen your cutters and set the depth gauge with every stroke which saves you time. It works so well, many professionals are switching over to the STIHL 2-in-1 File Holder. It is important to ask your dealer which size of file you need for your saw chain. They will give you the help you need to ensure you have the correct sized sharpening system.

A well sharpened chain saw cutter has three areas that require attention when sharpening: 1) top plate chisel, 2) side plate cutter and 3) depth gauge chisel height. How much is chiseled is controlled by the depth gauge. When these angles and heights are filed to manufactured specifications until sharp, then your chain will cut like new regardless of how old it is.

Sharpening a chain with the STIHL 2-in-1 File Holder is simple. Hold the guide flat (no angle necessary). This ensures the depth gauge flat file will work properly. Next match the angle of the guide with your bar as illustrated, this ensures you are at the correct top plate angle. Then to sharpen the cutters, push the round file through the gullet of the cutter, while simultaneously dressing the depth gauge with the flat file.

Remember these files work only on the push stroke; never draw the files back with pressure as this will dull your files. Always file on the push stroke and only use moderate pressure; an old friend of mine always says;

“chain saw filing is not a muscle sport, let the file do the work”.

The guide helps you ensure the angles are correct and then all you need to do is know when it is sharp. Sharp cutters will show no glare or glint on their leading edges. If there is shine or glare visible, it means that the leading edge is bent or blunted and therefore still dull. When sharp, they will be straight until they reveal no glare or reflection off of bent edges.

There are many myths, legends and facts that go around about sharpening chain, and I cannot dispel or speak to them all in this short article. I have been a professional arborist for 30 years and have been professionally training people in the safe use of chain saws, their maintenance and care for over 20 years. When it comes to sharpening, I come back to the same conclusions over and over, and my best guidance when it comes to sharpening chains is to use a file guide.

LawnGrips® Pro Shoes and Pro 8 BootsTired of lugging heavy work boots around all day? Get your feet into a pair of STIHL’s CSA Green Patch certified LawnGrips® and feel the difference comfort can make! Durable leather uppers with waterproof Butyl rubber outsoles will keep your feet warm and dry. The patented sole is designed to provide maximum traction on slopes and wet turf.

STIHL PRO TIP:LawnGrips® – Great On Wet Turf…Keep Them Waterproof! When you’re out in the early morning dew every day, your feet can end up wet and uncomfortable. Factory waterproofing treatments wear away fairly quickly and as your boots get broken in, tiny cracks in the leather can begin to absorb moisture. Here are a few tips to condition the leather on your boots and keep your feet dry:

Silicon and wax treatments can be water-based, so for best results, apply to damp leather. The water in the pores will actually help the waterproofing agents absorb into the leather as it dries.

Waxes are a popular and quality treatment, but can darken the leather. These products work best when applied in a thin, even layer with your fingers. Leather may be sealed so effectively that breathability may be compromised, so consider this when choosing.

Silicon products should be applied to new, unworn boots, shouldn’t darken or discolour leather or fabric and will allow for better breathability than wax, but may not keep the water out quite as well. Wax-based treatments which contain silicon will offer excellent waterproofing and durability, but will discolour the leather.

Fluorochemical treatments are non-aerosol pump sprays which work well on all types of materials, especially suede and synthetic fabrics. These products added to silicon treatments provide great durability and won’t discolour the boot material, but make sure to reapply often, to clean, dry boots.

So this spring when you’re getting ready to break those new boots in, be sure to think about the best waterproofing product for you!

“Maintaining a golf course for a living is extremely hard on footwear. Having owned several pairs of LawnGrips® and knowing how tough they are, this past season, I put a pair to the test. I purchased a new pair at the start of the season and wore them every day that I worked from the start of April until early December. In that time frame, I averaged 16,000 steps per day, which is about 12 km. This means in one golf season I covered roughly 2,700 km which is the same as walking from Toronto to Regina. The comfort, performance, durability and safety these boots provide, make them my work boot of choice as a professional in the turf management industry.”Paul Sullivan 2nd Assistant SuperintendentMississaugua Golf & Country Club www.mississauguagolf.com

These feel comfortable.” These were the first words out of my mouth when I tried on the NEW ADVANCE Plus pants. One thing I noticed about these pants is that I didn’t notice them! I’ve worn lots of chain saw pants that have you squirming to get out of them by the end of the day, but not these ones.Being a business owner, my daily duties vary greatly throughout the day; from babysitter and chauffeur for my daughter, to climbing arborist, to meetings with clients and doing quotes… the list goes on. If you’re like me, your day doesn’t end at 4 or 5 pm…I’ve often found myself going straight from work to the grocery store, picking up my daughter from school and even cooking dinner…still wearing these pants! The ADVANCE Plus pants are a huge step up over the mainstream variety of chain saw pants. I do not own a small engine repair shop, a rental business or a landscape maintenance company. I have never worked for STIHL or a logging company and my only yard tool has been a homeowner’s trimmer (now a FS 40 C). However, I have been associated with STIHL power equipment for thirty years and trust STIHL products and its people. Trust is defined as firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something: relationships are built on trust and commitment.

THE REST OF THE STORY:I started this affair in 1986 when a friend suggested a wilderness hike: an introduction to one of the finest walks in the west – The Great Divide Trail (GDT).

The Great Divide Trail wanders from Waterton Lakes through four other National Parks, six Provincial Parks and three Wilderness Areas to Kakwa Lake Provincial Park, 1,200 km to the north. During the next five years we extended our treks over the mountains into BC, up to Banff National Park, over to Rockwall Trail (Yoho National Park) to Field, always following the great divide. These hikes would be two to ten days long, averaging three to four miles per hour depending on the terrain and weather. We visited remote campsites, gazed at mighty mountain ranges and enjoyed many babbling brooks and streams. In 1995 returning to the trail I had enjoyed eight or nine years earlier, we were profoundly stricken by its sad condition. Logging, dirt bikes, quads and over-growth had made parts of the trail almost impassable. As we surveyed the devastation we knew that someone had to help this faithful route come back to life, and the commitment was made. I felt that I had to give something back to The Great Divide Trail which had given me so much pleasure.

My hiking partner and I contacted the original GDT organization members and our many camping and outdoor friends. With the help of the Alberta Wilderness Association (AWA), and with STIHL Canada’s assistance, we mounted a rescue for a portion of the failing trail. That first year a team of eight volunteers, using pack-horses to haul supplies (STIHL FS 480 and FS 550 brushcutters and MS 440 chain saw) into the upper Cataract Creek area, constructed a log bridge, cleaned, realigned and marked the GDT for 4 km each side of the creek. That long weekend was a great success and great fun. With all goals accomplished, we struck camp knowing how much a band of well-fed, well-equipped, committed volunteers could achieve. The following year another restoration trip was organized. We continued rebuilding the trail as needed from the north end point from the year before.

As we planned our sojourns each year, STIHL was always there with volunteered tools and sound advice. Some years, inevitable environmental challenges such as closures due to forest fires, floods or hazardous dry conditions kept us from our entry or necessitated postponement.

2009 was a very successful year. With three STIHL chain saws, two brushcutters and a group of ten volunteers aged eleven to seventy hailing from Alberta and British Columbia, we accomplished a remarkable amount of trail work. Not all of us were experienced trail builders or even backwoods campers, but everyone was pumped. The goal was to reconstruct the log bridge over the Oldman River, then realign and clean the trail on both sides as far as possible in a three-day window; quite a challenge. The work was completed with such enthusiasm, commitment, superb supervision and mutual co-operation, that we were able to ramble beyond the work area on our last day in camp. Everyone contributed their knowledge to the project. Some rediscovered forgotten skills or acquired new ones. Around the evening campfires, we discussed possible dates and projects for the next year.

The GDT rebuilding was planned for the 2013 summer and as you know Mother Nature had a say in the course of things. The floods washed away all our plans. The 2014 trip into the Hidden Creek area, with 20 folks and rebuilt 40 km of trail, was a complete success. This led to the 2015 rebuild and our first clean up of a GDT in British Columbia. Again, the STIHL brushcutters and chain saws made short work in clearing 2.5 km of alder bush covered trail.

Over the years the number of volunteers and friends has grown, as have industry supporters. STIHL and Joe Antonishin, Technical Services & Training Manager for Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba & Nunavut, have been unwavering in their support. We keep in touch by email, and everyone participates with suggestions, timing, contribution of tools, equipment and the introduction of new outdoor enthusiasts into this incredibly important area of trail sustainability.

The Friends of the Great Divide Trail has evolved and is now the Great Divide Trail Association, a registered not-for-profit organization. We have never been without a proper running chain saw or brushcutter. STIHL is a committed and trusted friend of the Great Divide Trail and little could have been accomplished without their contribution and support.

The long-life air filter system with air routing and HD2 round filter enables a long filter life. The filter reliably protects the engine from fine particles and is easy to clean. With so much hassle taken off your hands, you can focus entirely on what’s important: your work.

BENEFITSLong-life Air Filter System with Air Routing and HD2 Round FilterThe MS 362 C-M chain saw offers outstandingly long filter life. Coarse dirt particles are removed by the air routing, lightening the load on the actual filter. The filter is made of polyethylene and its pores are up to 70% finer than conventional filters. That means it can stop even the most minute particles of dust. It can be attached and detached without tools for easy cleaning. For stubborn grime, a thorough wash with warm soapy water will cleanse the filter.

STIHL 2-MIX EngineThe efficient STIHL 2-stroke stratified scavenging engine optimizes fuel utilization and allows for high torque over a wide RPM range. With up to 70% lower exhaust emissions and fuel consumption that features up to 20% improved fuel efficiency, this chain saw has plenty of power and performs well.

STIHL ElastoStart™ and Decompression ValveIn conjunction with ElastoStart™, the decompression valve reduces the tractive force on the starter cord, making it easier to start the engine. This is due to the fact that the decompression valve reduces the compression when the tool is started.

Professional Anti-vibration SystemThe anti-vibration system reduces vibrations and oscillations with a system of buffers, as well as special springs between the engine block and the handles – for less tiring, more precise operation.

Quick LocksThe cover can be quickly and easily removed by opening three quick locks. That way you can clean and service the air filter, spark plugs and cylinder fins.

Captive NutIt’s impossible to lose the captive nuts when you’re swapping cutting attachments, as they are attached to the sprocket cover itself.

For the past 15 years, the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in St. Marys, ON, and STIHL have formed a partnership that has helped transform the Hall’s 32-acre site into one of the country’s most picturesque baseball settings.

“We host more than 900 events on our site every year and we’re often told that our baseball fields are some of the most beautiful in Canada and one of the reasons for this is the support we’ve received from STIHL,” said Scott Crawford, the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame’s director of operations.

Over the years, STIHL has donated grass trimmers, a chain saw and safety clothing to the Hall and has provided discounts on other equipment. STIHL has also loaned the Hall of Fame its tents for different events, advertised in the induction program, purchased field signage and supported the annual Celebrity Golf Classic and London Salutes Canadian Baseball fundraising breakfast.

The Hall of Fame and STIHL began their partnership over a decade ago when then Hall president Tom Valcke reconnected with long-time friend and STIHL Canada president, Greg Quigg.

Founded by Bruce Prentice in Toronto in 1983, the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame was awarded to St. Marys when the quaint Southwestern, ON, community beat out 12 other towns and cities that were bidding to host the museum after it had closed in 1989.

The Hall’s board was looking for a smaller town for the museum and St. Marys not only fit that bill, but it also owned a rich baseball history. The first documented baseball game in North America was played in nearby Beachville on June 4,

1838 and the written account of this contest was supplied by former St. Marys mayor Dr. Adam Ford. The town was also home to the St. Marys Wood Working Specialty Co., one of the country’s most prominent batmakers from the late 1800s to 1933.

The Canadian ball hall officially reopened in St. Marys on June 4, 1998 – 160 years to the day of the historic Beachville game. That same year, the Hall also cut the ribbon on its first diamond, which was named St. Marys Cement Plant Field in honour of the local company that donated the 32 acres of land for the site.

The Hall followed that up four years later with a second diamond that was named Rotary Field, in recognition of the support provided by the local service club, as well as a third ball field. In 2014, King Field – a fourth diamond that was named after the King family who helped fund the project – was unveiled.

Today, the Hall’s 32-acre site attracts thousands of visitors each year and there are now 111 inductees honoured in the museum, including Canadian legends like Fergie Jenkins and Larry Walker and Toronto Blue Jays and Montreal Expos greats like Roberto Alomar and Gary Carter.

The Hall has plans to build a new 7,000-square-foot, state-of- the-art museum with a pavilion and walking trails and it’s partnerships with respected businesses like STIHL that will help bring these plans to fruition.

“I greatly value our relationship with STIHL,” said Crawford. “They’re an outstanding company and I look forward to continuing our partnership with them in the future.”

WHAT’S BEHIND THE STIHL BRAND?STIHL BEGAN WITH A MAN AND A VISION.In 1926, Andreas Stihl established the A. STIHL factory in Cannstatt, near Stuttgart. He developed the world’s first one-man petrol chain saw.

VISIONSTIHL has a clear mission. Andreas Stihl’s goals and mission are as valid today as they were 90 years ago: to make people’s work easier and to never stop innovating.

TO MAKE PEOPLE’S WORK IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS EASIERThat idea is the principle and guiding force behind the company to this day. It also contains the roots of STIHL’s social and ecological conscience. STIHL products not only make a significant contribution to the preservation, cultivation and maintenance of the great outdoors. STIHL is also the world leader in the development of environmentally friendly engine technologies. Humane working conditions and environmentally sound manufacturing processes round out the picture.

MISSIONAndreas Stihl was a steam engine expert and he witnessed how such machines made work in sawmills difficult and cumbersome, as workers had to haul heavy tree trunks to the sawing stations. It was at this time that Andreas Stihl had the idea of developing a portable chain saw that would “bring the saw to the tree”.

To this day, STIHL prides itself on a deep understanding of people‘s needs and what they require of their work tools: through long-term observation and intensive investigation of work processes. Based on our research, we develop innovative ideas and solutions that are then continually enhanced and constantly improved. Product development is not the only area where we pursue this mission. It’s even more crucial when it comes to the daily workflows and business activities of all STIHL’s employees.

This brand essence model depicts the fundamentals of the STIHL brand in every aspect. It provides clear answers to questions about the brand’s character, capabilities and profile. The brand essence is the basis for a relevant, consistent, unique, forward looking and internationally viable brand positioning.

VALUES AND CHARACTER» Things are only worth what one makes them worth. « Jean-Baptiste Molière

Professional. Professionalism means getting the best results by relying on experience and passion to face challenges effectively and efficiently.

Not for everyone. STIHL is a brand for demanding and quality-conscious consumers. STIHL purposefully avoids catering to market segments that are strictly guided by price.

Reliable and loyal. Every one of our products is proof of our reliability. We also see ourselves as our customers’ dependable and loyal partners.

Down-to-earth yet cosmopolitan. STIHL respects its German roots and exercises an ideal balance of regional and global engagement.

Sophisticated and innovative. STIHL’s engineers develop advanced procedures, technologies and products with inventiveness and imagination. Every STIHL innovation is perfected down to the finest detail and is only introduced onto the market after a long series of tests and improvements.

ATTRIBUTES AND CAPABILITIES» Nothing worthwhile was ever achieved by one who did not set out to achieve the extraordinary. «Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach

World market leader. As the world‘s leading manufacturer of chain saws and power tools, we take on the challenges of the world market. Instead of seeking short-term success, we focus on our customers and endeavour to uphold our values.

Uncompromising professional quality. At STIHL, uncompromising quality means: understanding the customer and consistently meeting their requirements. STIHL products and processes set the standards in their field.

German engineering excellence. Thoroughness and the pursuit of perfection have characterized STIHL ever since the company was first established. STIHL manufacturers operate worldwide according to the same high standards that also apply to matters of environmental protection and work safety.

User-friendly products. At STIHL, the user is always a top priority. Every STIHL product is developed and examined with one aim in mind – to offer the greatest degree of safety, ergonomic comfort and environmental-friendliness possible. Only technology that has proven its worth in practical tests is awarded the STIHL name.

Sustainable partnerships. We regard our specialist dealers as partners who fulfil an integral role in our business processes. The long-term bonds that ensue from these partnerships help us to constantly improve our business.

Personal advice and expert service. Only a specialist dealer can satisfy STIHL‘s high standards of quality. They are the only retailers guaranteed to provide professional service and personal advice, including instruction on the proper usage of STIHL products.

STIHL takes environmental impact very seriously. The emission levelsproduced by all STIHL engines not only meet the limits required by law, they are significantly below the target limit. To meet the stringent EU and US exhaust emission standards, STIHL has invested more than €500 million in engine development over the past 10 years. During this time period new and sophisticated engine technologies were developed to significantly reduce the fuel consumption and emissions of our power equipment.

STIHL Germany and our US plant in Virginia Beach have been subjected to a selective enforcement audit (SEA) by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). All of the engines that were tested were below the required limits and easily passed their tests.

STIHL products perform as well in the field as they do in laboratory tests. In other words, our engines produce the same exhaust emissions on the test bench as they do in practical operation.

Testing in Europe is equally strenuous and STIHL outperforms competitors there as well. For example, the DUH (Deutsche Umwelthilfe) survey shows that the exhaust emissions of some manufacturers were often times higher than the prescribed limits. In these tests, however, STIHL products were again well within the exhaust emission limits.

It goes without saying that STIHL absolutely rejects the use of “defeat devices” and “cycle beating” software. Defeat devices are programs or any apparatus which cause emissions related parameters to be disabled, bypassed or modified. Cycle Beating software detects test cycles and employs special engine mapping to comply with emissions limits. These types of technologies not only harm the environment, they significantly contribute to a loss of confidence in modern emissions reducing technologies and need to be strenuously policed and penalties enforced.

The foundation of STIHL’s success is built upon the need to improve. STIHL is committed to investing capital in new technologies to not only improve performance, but create products that reduce our carbon footprint and offer our customers a better choice for years to come.

STIHL CRAZY AFTER ALL THESE YEARS...

Riddle: Why did the gardener quit?

Answer: Because his celery wasn’t high enough.

On the surface, they seem like such innocent words.

Harmless, even.

And you think: “Even if this comes to pass, it’ll be okay.”

And you will be wrong.

So wrong.

Wrong like: “Iraq possesses weapons of mass destruction”- wrong.

Like: “Don’t listen to the polls. Alberta will never vote NDP.”- wrong.

Or: “Charlie Sheen would be a great babysitter!”- wrong.

Or: “That Trudeau kid will never amount to nothing.”- wrong.

Or: “Forget the stock market. It’s rigged. This right here? This Beanie Baby? Gonna be worth $5,000 easy in five years.”- wrong.

So here goes.

The following sentence should fill you with more fear than any of the above: “Honey…I think it’s time we renovated the kitchen.”

Now, if you were watching a movie instead of reading words on a page, I would have punctuated that last sentence with a bolt of lightning outside the house so close that it rattled the dishes in the cupboards.

And probably added, just after the thunder dies off, a big old cathedral-style organ playing one of those really spooky horror movie chords.

Bum-bum-bum-bummmmm!

In the old black-and-white horror movies, what that chord means is that Frankenstein is about to lurch onto the screen.

And strangle somebody.

And as soon as my wife said those words, I had a feeling. I had a feeling that a monster had been unleashed.

I was not wrong.

We live in a 1970s-era, one-storey bungalow. And the kitchen cupboards were original. Which means the finish was dark cherry.

Kinda like coffins.

And the fittings were old, distressed brass.

Also, kinda like coffins.

Which was appropriate because our kitchen, despite the giant floor-to-ceiling windows at one end, was where light went to die.

At first, the plan was to reface the cabinets with something lighter and brighter, so that on a gloomy winter morn, when you stumbled into the kitchen, your eyes didn’t linger on the knife rack and your mind didn’t think dark, self-destructive thoughts. (Did I mention I may have Seasonal Affective Disorder? Which has the best acronym ever? SAD?)

But the cabinet guy says: “You know, for an extra two grand I can give you all brand-new cabinets.”

And my wife said, “Well, maybe we should run the cabinets the length of the room.”

And the cabinet guy says, “Well, you’ll need new countertops then. Nobody does formica anymore. I think you better get a contractor.”

And with the contractor came the tile guy, the flooring guy, the plumber, the ceiling guys, two of the contactors eight sons who were the carpenter guys, the team of electricians, the building inspectors, and eight men named “Bob” whose function I never discerned and who may have just been homeless guys roaming the alleys who were drawn by the noise in search of discarded copper wire or something.

It was supposed to take a month.

It took nearly three.

There was so much dust generated in that room that it was sealed off behind plastic sheeting like a makeshift lab in a zombie apocalypse movie. And my wife is so violently allergic to dust that we couldn’t turn on the furnace, because it would simply spray the dust around the house.

So I was freezing and trying to feed a family of three — plus my son’s girlfriend who turns up at mealtimes with astonishing regularity — on a two-burner hotplate in the living room.

But it ended. And we have a nice new kitchen now.

Months have passed. Yesterday, I found my wife in the basement rec room. Lips pursed. Thinking. Sketching on a little pad.

There’s never a good lightning bolt or a clap of thunder around when you need one, is there?
