Global Support Services and Risk Management & Insurance

Co-Host International Security Seminar

On December 2nd, the Levy Conference Center at Penn’s Law School was standing room only for the OSAC Col-

lege & University Health, Safety & Security Seminar. The seminar was hosted by Global Support Services and

the Office of Risk Management & Insurance in partnership with OSAC. OSAC - the Overseas Security and Ad-

visory Council - is a division of Diplomatic Security at the U.S. Department of State which promotes internation-

al security cooperation between American private-sector interests and the U.S. Department of State. Penn is an

active member of OSAC, which has proven a valuable resource when assessing high risk travel and responding to

international incidents that involve Penn travelers abroad.

Jaime Molyneux, Director of International Risk Management, led the event planning committee in developing the

content rich programming and also served as the event’s MC. The theme of the two-day seminar was travel secu-

rity in the Middle East and North Africa with a focus on Egypt. Guest speakers from Diplomatic Security, Con-

sular Affairs, three private security firms and ten universities, including several of our colleagues at Penn, shared

their expertise and experiences on a variety of topics. Program highlights included sessions on militant extrem-

ism, security evacuations, female travel safety, emergency response planning, cyber security and responding to a

student death abroad.

Registration reached its capacity with 150 attendees from 50 universities, study abroad providers, security firms

and insurance companies. Attendees had several opportunities to network including a “Philly favorites” snack

break and an evening reception in the Law School’s Great Hall. Closing remarks on day one were provided by

Ben Evans, Executive Director of Risk Management & Insurance, and Maureen Rush, Vice President for Public

Safety, who discussed Penn’s commitment to safety and security beyond campus boundaries. Artemis Koch,

Executive Director of Global Support Services, ended the seminar on day two emphasizing the importance of

strong networks and cross collaboration when supporting university travelers abroad.
