P R I N C I PA L ’ S M E S S A G E :
Dear Stevenson Families,
As we approach the winter break, I would like to first take
this opportunity to wish each of you and your families a most
happy, healthy holiday season! I hope that you will have a
chance to relax and enjoy some special times with your
children. As always, I am so proud of how hard our
Stevenson students have been working each and every day!
We are honored to be an integral part of your children’s
lives. We look forward to watching your children continue to
sparkle and shine throughout the New Year.
As one year fades allowing a new year to begin, it is
worthwhile to reflect and assess. During the inclement
weather season, more and more of our students are being
driven to school. This only makes sense. As a reminder, the
right lane in our circle drive is for DROP OFF and PICK UP
only. In the morning, after dropping off your student(s),
please exit using the left lane. In the afternoon, after
picking up your student(s), please also exit using the left
lane. For safety reasons, please never drop off or pick up
students in the left lane.
On behalf of all of us here at Stevenson, we want to wish you
happy holidays and a healthy new year. We hope that you
are able to enjoy this time with family and friends. As always,
thank you for your continued support.
Happy Holidays,
Ms. Hansen

Tips for Getting to School on Time
Being late for school hurts a child’s learning. A student who is 10 minutes late every day will miss 30 hours of instruction during the school year. Children
can copy notes or make up an assignment but they can never get back what’s most important: the discussions, the questions, the explanations by the teacher and the thinking that makes learning come alive. Below are some
useful tips to help your child get to school on time:
No TV on school mornings
Teach kids to set and use their own alarm clocks/clock radios
Have kids choose clothes the night before school
Have schoolwork and lunch ready and laid out, ready to go
Have kids bathe or shower in the evening
Do not provide inappropriate excuses for your child to miss school
Have your child walk to school or the bus stop with another child who is always on time
Have your child go to bed 10 minutes earlier and get up 10 minutes earlier
Help your child relax before bedtime with a story instead of the stimulation of television
When your child is ready for school on time, praise and reward him or her
Get to know your child’s friends and their families and make connections with other families that value school attendance
Ask teachers and staff at your child’s school and other family members for advice on how to keep your child going to school on time, everyday!

Cold / Flu Season
As we continue through the cold months, please be mindful of the cold and flu season. Please refrain from sending your child to school if they have had a fever
or vomited in the past 24 hours. This time of year it is so important to wash hands often to keep from spreading germs.
Please remember to dress your children with warm jackets, hats/scarves and gloves. If the temperature is 20 degrees or above including wind chill, our
students will be outside for recess and possibly P.E.
News from the Social Worker
After a break between semesters, the ISU College
Mentors program will resume on Mondays after
school starting January 28th. Please remember if

rolled in the program in the fall automatically con-
tinue in it for the second semester. Please contact
Michelle Watson, School Social Worker, for more
information. The best way to contact her is through

school at 663-2351.

News from the Library Media Center
Welcome back to a new year! I hope you enjoyed a relaxing winter break with a good book or two. As we settle back in
to our regular school schedules again, please remind your children to bring their library books back to school on their
due date so they can take advantage of checking out another one.
Good Fit Books:
At Stevenson many teachers have been talking to their classes about
choosing good fit books, and this is also something that is highlighted
in the LMC as well. Research shows when children are reading
independently, they should be reading books they understand and can
read. We want your child to enjoy reading, which means they are
reading books they are interested in and are at a good reading level for
them. An acronym that we use to remind students how to find good fit
books is called I PICK. Remind your child to pick good fit books next
time they visit the library.
ELL ACCESS Testing
The ELL ACCESS testing begins January 17th.
This is an annual test given to students enrolled in the ELL program. The test is designed to measure English lan-guage proficiency. It measures the four language compo-nents of reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. The test consists of three different tests given on
different days:
1. A Reading and Listening test
2. A Writing test
3. A Speaking test
While there is no way to study or prepare for this test, it will help if children are well rested and eat a healthy breakfast the morning of the test. We will receive the test results in May. Mrs. Thomas & Ms. Flores
Student Council will be accepting MITTENS and
GLOVES through February. Any donations may be
given to someone in the office.
The next Student Council meeting will be Wednesday,
January 9 at 8:20a.
Thank you, Mrs. Brenwall and Mrs. Cottrell
