    I t only came t o be t h a t I was occupying this space a t t h i s time by chance. phca l l sev era l days before f rom my fr i en ds who l i v e here se t t h e stage f o r a n ev e nt t o a l l t h o se t h a t had been experienced prior . With a g l a c i e r that moves perhaps two ort h r e e f e e t a year as a backyard i t was a l l easi ly unders tood.The start of th e 1982 ve rs io n of the Juneau Marathon and Half Marathon (thank Gouas within the boundaries of a n a t i o n a l f o r e s t , more s p e c i f i c a l l y t h e v i s i t o r ' s c e n tepar lc ing l o t over looking the g la cie r . The p lan , i f th er e uas one , wa$o ru n a p ac e t h a t f e l t c o mf or ta bl e a nd i f I f egood i t would be a har d workout. Could I win? Well, any time you enter a r ace , t heot i ca l l y , you have the po ten t i a l t o win. I t just depends on who else i s - o r i s n ' t t he r

    l l t h e familiar f a c e s I ' d n ev er s e e n b ef o re . l l t h e sw i f t l o o ki n g a na to mi es , t h e ls t y l e s of people j u s t l i k e thos e back home, were around me.Pre race in st ru ct io ns were l i ke the explanat ions of the sa fe ty equipment aboard a i r c r a f t upon take of f , pr e t t y ba si c and heard many t imes before. I wasn't worried about which way t o go si nc e I ' d j u s t fol low whomever was i n fof me l i k e any oth er race. And so th e s t a r t i n g gun went of f and away we went.Now I might say with confidence that the half marathon distance i s by no means ak icker s r ac e nor i s i t a rac e one can throw caut ion t o the wind and l i ck et y- sp l i t thef i r s t te n ki lomete rs and then hope t o hang on the rest of the way. Good int en ti on s lquite different when you are slow-poking i t a long the s ide o f the road wi th .ye t ano ttwo or thre e mi les t o go.
