• Traditional capstone paper found insufficient to measure the multiplicity of our newly articulated SLO’s.

• Need for a media / assessment tool capable of capturing the broad range of competencies learned by geography students.

concerns

• The cost of the subscription ($90/5yrs) for a student is, more than some students can afford

• Raises questions of the virtue of asking students to pay for department assessment activities

• Requires wide participation on the part of the faculty (cost per class / breadth of assessment)

• May soon become obsolete as shareware alternatives evolve.

• our student portfolios are just beginning to mature…it takes several semesters

• we have had positive response from faculty, but to date limited participation beyond the assessment team (moodle looms!)

• students and faculty are still largely unfamiliar with portfolios and all need practice– similar uncertainties surround resumes

• Professional portfolios were a key component for landing our positions at CSUN.

• It is important for theatre students to understand and embrace the culture of building, editing, and refining a professional portfolio over their career.

• With the advances in digital media technologies, many practitioners have moved to develop digital portfolios to augment or replace traditional paper portfolios. – Advantages of a digital portfolio– Convenience, cost , portability– Storage space and security– Polish & professionalism– Learner centered– Increases technological skills

Purpose of a Portfolio• Learning (Formative) -- occurs on an on-going

basis.• Assessment (Summative) -- occurs within the

context of a formal evaluation process.• Employment (Marketing)-- used for seeking

Integrating the Culture of Portfolios• Students will store selected artifacts from all Theatre

core classes in their LiveText Portfolios.• The project was launched Fall 2007 with TH102-

Theatre Form and Content.• TH142-Introduction to Theatre Performance &

Introduction to Stage Voice and Movement will be added Spring 2008.

• The Spring 2011 class will have a portfolio archiving artifacts from all of there Theatre classes.

Why use LiveText?• All of the reasons outlined above by Steve.• If ongoing assessment is going to be successful,

it must be imbedded into the curriculum and not merely a “must do” appendage.

• Allows sophisticated media elements, such as video and animations, to be integrated into and stored in the portfolios

Where Do We Go From Here?• Provide the framework and support for both full

time and part time faculty to integrate the culture of portfolios into the curriculum.

• Develop comprehensive reports which will yield useful data.

• Using the data to refine the curriculum.
