Can you believe it? We are already at mid-year. The end of the second quarter and first semester is Friday, January 23. School closes three hours early on this day. Mid year is a perfect time to talk to your child’s teacher about areas of your child’s successes and possible needs. Please review your child’s online gradebook and contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions. If you have any issues accessing your child’s online gradebook, please contact your child’s teacher, and this issue will be addressed immediately. Lutherville’s faculty wants to discuss your child’s progress. Together, we can ac-complish anything!

I hope parents are able to visit our school to volunteer. As you walk our welcoming school building, you will ob-serve students engaged in some wonderful learning experiences. Science experiments to the left! Reader’s Theatre to the right! Wait! Did you read those great blogs and see that wonderful Lego zipline or detailed STEM project? Our school is abuzz with creative, hands-on, mind-on learning.

As the second quarter unfolds, there are some important dates to remember. Schools are closed January 19 for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. On January 26, schools are closed for professional development. Third quarter begins on January 27. This means we only have about 90 days left to the school year. On February 5, parents/guardians can expect report cards for second quarter to be sent home. Also that week February 2-6, we will have our fantastic book fair in the library. Don’t forget, we will also have an exciting Family Learning Night on February 3 with an opportunity for an even-ing Scholastic Book sale from 5:00-7:30pm. Please note: Family Learning Night starts at 6pm and ends at 7:30pm. Each year, this fair helps introduce so many people to interesting and new books that cannot be found in book stores. More information about this great event will be forthcoming. Finally, Presidents’ Day will be February 16, so schools will be closed.

Whoever said that there is such a thing as winter doldrums? It may be cold outside, but our school is warm with a positive spirit: An energy of learning! I know that sounds corny, but what do you expect? I am an elementary principal! :)

Here is some additional exciting news! The Benjamin: Personal Assistant Award for Excellence is an awards program that has been created to recognize outstanding contributions from Personal Assistants at Lutherville Lab. Anyone can nominate a personal assistant: students, parents, family members, teachers, other assistants. Nominations are due by Friday, January 23. A committee comprised of personal assistants, teachers, and parents will review nominations in February. The select-ed recipient of The Benjamin will be notified before the Staff Meeting in March and will be celebrated during this meeting. Please send your nomination letters to the front office.

One final note, please stay tuned to your favorite news station for any school delays or closures. You may also check to see if schools are closed by visiting www.baltimoresun.com. If you do not have access to the Internet, you may call 410-887-5555 to see if schools are closed. If for any reason, schools close early, you will receive a call from our automated system. It will start with, “Hello, Parents! This is Steve Buettner, principal of Lutherville Lab.” I am sure you never tire of this greeting! Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Steve Buettner

Environmental Club

What do recycling and rainbow trout have in common? These are two ways that members of Lutherville Lab’s Environmental Club make a difference. Stu-dents in our after-school club organize our school-wide recycling program and care for the rainbow trout that live in the iLab. Is your child interested in na-ture, sharing ideas, and making a difference?

There are still spaces available in Lutherville Lab’s after-school Environmental Club. The Club includes students in grade 3, 4, and 5, and meets from 4:05-5:00 PM on Thursdays. Our second session begins on January 15 and runs for 10 weeks. An additional session will be scheduled in the spring.

You can visit our school blog to view a slideshow that explains more about our Environmental Club (https://luthervilleilab.edublogs.org/2014/09/19/our-environmental-club-will-begin-meeting-soon/) .

Applications are available outside the iLab and should be returned to Mrs. Austen as soon as possible.

Guidelines for Requesting Transcripts

In the Lutherville area, there are excellent Baltimore County public schools. If you are considering having your child apply to a private middle school, please submit your signed transcript release form and teacher evaluation forms. The private schools do not expect letters of recommendation from faculty members as the teacher evaluation forms provide sufficient information to make a decision. There are often a large number of transcripts to process. Please note that these will be done in the order in which they are received. We adhere to the deadlines requested by the schools. They assure us that transcripts are not reviewed nor are decisions made until after the deadline date. If your child will be applying to more than one private school, please submit all the transcript requests at the same time. There is no charge for the first transcript, but for every one thereafter, there will be a $5.00 charge.

Attention Volunteers!!!!! GREAT NEWS!!!!

Volunteer orientation now available online!!

The brief orientation that individuals must complete to become Baltimore Coun-ty Public Schools volunteers is now available online at http://bit.ly/1hC7J1w. Each year, more than 20,000 parents and family and community members volun-teer their knowledge, skills and time to BCPS. They contribute to students' aca-demic progress in a number of ways, from assisting in cafeterias and libraries to accompanying students on field trips and organizing special events and projects. To ensure the safety of BCPS students, parents and others interesting in volun-teering in county schools must complete an annual application process and par-ticipate in a brief orientation. This orientation covers topics such as volunteer ex-pectations and guidelines, school safety and security and important information regarding BCPS policies and procedures. While most schools hold in-person orientations near the beginning of each school year, the new online training makes the sessions available year-round and at a potential volunteer's convenience. At the end of the online orientation, cer-tificates can be printed to document completion. This online school volunteer training was developed through a partnership be-tween the BCPS Office of Family and Community Engagement and

SafeSchools.com. For more information about the BCPS volunteer program, please visit www.bcps.org/community/volunteer_info.
