This was one of those projects that's been on my to do list ever since I purchased my Harbor Freight 9 x 20 And now that's its finished I couldn't be happier !! If your project requires constantly moving the tailstock back and forth you will really appreciate the camlock modification. The design is very similar to the 7 x 10 camlock I built a couple of years ago. Kelly McCoy also has a great camlock modification for his Enco 9 x 20 shown here.

I have included this information to give a better idea of how I built the camlock. Please take note that while most of the 9x 20 lathes are similar they are not exact. Therefore the measurements given are for reference only and may differ for your lathe.

To start out I had to mill down slightly with a 5/8" end mill better shown here. I also used the mill to remove a small amount from the top to achieve clearance for the cam & locknut ( the hole is not completed here )

I used the Grizzly Mini Mill with a 5/8" endmill to achieve the recess needed. I also used the end mill to drill the 5/8" shaft hole through the tailstock body.

The Cam

the blank cam shaft turned on the 9 x 20 from 1" OD stock. The large end is 1" OD the smaller end is 5/8" OD.

I first marked the location for the hold down bolt. I also drilled a pilot hole.

I drilled a 5/16" hole through the shaft using the Mini Mill and a 5/16" end mill. I used a milling vise with the shoulder of the cam placed against the jaws as shown by the red arrow. After drilling through the cam shaft I slightly rotated the cam shaft a number of times until the notch was complete. By placing the shoulder of the cam against the vise you do not have to keep centering the end mill. The slot will stay straight.

Next I placed the cam in the tailstock housing and marked where the release position should be. Shown on the left with a black line. I then filed the cam flat at the mark. you don't have to remove much metal ( .020-.030" ?) Once the black mark was filed flat I filed in the "tighten" direction just to round the edges.

Completed cam with 5/16" hold down bolt in place. I replaced the metric hold down bolt with a 5" long 5/16" grade 5 bolt and a 5/16" locknut. I also used a grade 5 washer (blue) between the locknut and cam.

I drilled and tapped the cam to attach the release handle. ( 3/8" thread )

I more or less copied the supplied 9x20 chuck wrench. The new handle is 5 1/2" long (end to end)

9 x 20 Way & Leadscrew Protector

I used a piece of thin balck vinyl flooring material from the local hardware store and attached it to the carriage. It is sold in 24" & 36" widths for very little. It is attached using one of the existing threaded holes on the carriage. This works great for keeping the ways & leadscrew chip free. Bob Bickerton'sLathe Ball/Radius Turning Tool

I have a Myford and a Cummins mini-lathe and saw on John Moran's site his mini-lathe version of your ball/ radius turning attachment for your 9x20. I made one like his for the mini-lathe and, after viewing your site, decided I could modify it more like yours and use it on both the Myford and the mini-lathe. I've made your modification (two cutting inserts) to allow easier concave turning and have bolted a small piece of 0.5" wide ruler to the tool holder to allow setting of the radius by 1/64 inch increments. I can turn a ball 2" OD. It works great and the addition of the ruler makes it easy to set radius.

The secret to making the set screw adjustment work is to use a different thread for the adjustment. With both threads the same, no matter how many degrees you turn the set screw, the distance never changes between the 2 parts. By using a different thread pitches, the distance between the 2 parts will now change as the stud is rotated. The greater the difference in pitch, the greater the distance changes per degree of rotation. I ended up going with 5/16-18 on the clamp shoe & 5/16-24 on the handle. It works very well & you can set the handle to lock anywhere you want. With the coarse thread on the shoe, it releases fully within about 30 deg. of rotation. Like the tail stock, I also put a spring on the saddle clamp shoe to keep it from binding as the carriage is moved.

For the way protector, I used a piece of entry flap from a dog house I had laying around. I wanted it longer for better protection but it interfered with the chuck. To get around the problem, I cut off a short piece of aluminum channel and secured it with one of the follower screws to keep the flap clear of the chuck. I've had no problems using the stock 3-jaw with it. But with the 4-jaw chuck, it was too long and stopped the carriage before reaching the chuck. It is just a simple matter of taking the channel off and swinging the protector out of the way for 4-jaw operations. In the side view it appears to be just about touching the chuck because that side isn't fastened so it tends to lift higher, but it's actually quite a way from it.

Enco Phase II QCPTHere are some pics and comments from John Baines on the Phase II QCPT (wedge type) mounted on his Grizzly 9 x 19 lathe. The pics also show one of six cast iron wheels he has turned for a locomotive. Great work !!

I scrounged some 1" steel plate from a scrap yard and aftersawing for about two hours, I had myself a square of about 4 inches. Then after another two hours of careful milling I had the block to the dimensions that fit my top slide. In the meantime, I bought the Phase II QCTP (Wedge Type) from ENCO. At $89.00 I think its a terrific bargain. Today, I bought a 1/2" bolt from Home Depot and after machining a suitable hole and boring a tight ledge for the vertical bolt, I mounted the Phase II on top of the 1 inch steel block with its four anchor holes screws.
