SISTERS GIVE BIG Gamma Gamma alumnae support a sister in need

W _ On July 12, 2007, Heather Sako Cowham, Gamma Gamma, Indiana State University, was surprised with a fundraiser called "Heather's Big Give. " The event was organized by fellow Gamma Gamma sisters Robyn Mendoza Bewley, Erin Whiteside Burk, Betsy Hart Doyle, Stacy Williams McGauley, and Farrah L. Thterwiler, along with Heather's family and friends. The event was used to raise money for Heather's battle with ClQ Nephropathy, a rare disorder that affects the filtering process of the kidneys. Together with a

garage sale, penny drives, and donations, "Heather's Big Give" raised over $4000 for her medical costs.

Letter Dear Sigma Kappa sisters,

It is easy to see why summer is so many people's favotite season, including mine: great weather, outdoor activities, family vacations, and for collegians and teachers, a welcome three-month respite from school.

In addition, summer is also about reconnecting with friends and fanilly, enjoying the beauty of the great outdoors, and taking time to relax and recharge.

Tllis summer was a season of fi rsts in my life: my fi rst summer away

from my home state of Michigan, my first childhood mend's wedding, and my first Sigma Kappa national convention (check out the Autumn Triangle for complete convention coverage).

Despite the more relaxed atmosphere of the summer months, we should always remember that Sigma Kappa sisters continue to make a difference year-round. In this issue of the Triangle, we feature some exceptional sisters that have made an impact in the literary, education, and service fields.

I hope you enjoy reading about the different ways Sigma Kappas are affecting the world, and hopefully they can inspire you to achieve great things, no matter how small.

A Lesson in

De:mocracy and

Sisterhood Congressional Hill Visits bring

Greeks together for common cause

Throughout the Greek system, fraternity and sorority houses are in need of important repairs, but under current tax

law any donations made toward the improvement of Greek housing is not tax exempt.

Last April, student and alumni representatives from the North-American Interfraternity Conference, the National Panhellenic Conference, and the National Pan-Hellenic Council came together in Washington, D.C. to persuade congressmen and senators to amend the current tax law and pass the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act (CHIA) to allow for tax deductible donations.

Sigma Kappa's official representatives in Washington were Rachel E. Armor, Epsilon Epsilon, University of Georgia, Sara Miller, Kappa Xi, University of Nevada-Reno, Executive Director Rachelle J. Merkel, Gamma Eta, Ball State University, and Cheri Morrell Dejong, Epsilon Omega, California Polytechnic State University, national vice president for finance. Representatives from every Greek organization met together and spent two days learning everything from Capitol Hill etiquette to the key players in the House and Senate.

The details and nuances of tax law are endless, but even more challenging was learning to present the CHIA to nonGreeks. It is easy for someone who has benefited from a sisterhood or brotherhood to support this tax exemption, but persuading someone only familiar with the negative stereotypes of Greek life was a major hurdle to overcome. Although most Greek issues are not on the forefront of political agendas, making college more affordable is, and money is a language spoken by all politicians.

One out of eight college students live in Greek housing, making the NIC, the NPC, and the NPHC the largest nonuniversity, not-for-profit student landlord. Together these three organizations own and manage $3 billion in student housing at no cost to the American taxpayers or the host institution. While donations made to colleges for the improvement of their housing are tax exempt, donations to

other not-for-profit housing entities are not. The Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act would erase this disparity, extending the tax-exemption to all student housing. More funding would take the burden off students and enable fraternities and sororities to install modem safety equipment such as fire sprinklers, smoke detectors, and alarm systems.

After the initial training, the collegiate and national representatives were grouped in teams to practice meeting officials and persuading them to sponsor the act. On April 15, 49 teams visited the offices of representatives and senators to inform them of the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act. As a result of the Greek representatives' efforts on Capitol Hill, support for the CHIA is greater than ever. Today, it has 201 sponsors in the House of Representatives and 38 in the Senate.

Even with impressive bi-partisan support, the struggle to get the act passed is not over. Everyone can participate in the grassroots campaign to help protect and improve Greek housing. For more information about the CHIA and to personally petition your elected officials, go to www. fratemalcaucus.org or click on "Congressional Letter Writing Campaign" under "Events & Programs" at www.sigmakappa.org.

From

Broadcasting

to Best-Sellers

Mary Jane Behrends Clark finds success in two

different career fields

While in college at the University of Rhode Island, Mary Jane Behrends Clark, Phi, knew that she wanted to work in the TV news world, but she never dreamed that this career choice would lead her to become a bestselling novelist. Mary Jane is the author of 11 novels, most recently It Only Takes a Moment, released on July 29.

Before starting her literary career, Mary Jane was a writer and producer at CBS News for over 30 years, a world from which she expertly draws details and subject matter for her novels. "I took my years of experience working in TV news and used them to create a fictional television news world where the reporters and producers become personally involved with their stories. They can get into all sorts of fascinating and dangerous situations and they have to figure out a way to solve the crimes while reporting on the stories. My books have strong, bright heroines who figure things out by using their wits."

After graduation, Mary Jane started at CBS News in an entry-level position as a desk assistant, working the 4 p.m. to midnight shift. After a year, she was promoted to broadcast associate, followed by assistant producer, assignment editor, associate producer and eventually producer. She worked on everything from breaking news, political, and international stories, to crime stories

and obituaries. She believes that her experience writing for television helped when she decided to start writing fiction. "I learned to get right to the point and keep the story moving which is important in writing suspense."

Mary Jane's newest novel, It Only Takes a Moment, draws both from her experiences at CBS and from her childhood. Her father was an agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, working on espionage, extortion and kidnapping cases. He was transferred several times when Mary Jane was younger, from Nebraska to Oregon to Virginia before settling in New Jersey, where she currently resides.

Mary Jane remembers her father working on high-profile kidnapping cases when she was a child, but due to the sensitive and sometimes frightening nature of the cases, he never talked about them. "Even though he didn't talk about his work, I was able to follow along with what was happening

in the newspaper or on television, and that left me with a lifelong fear of kidnapping."

It Only Takes a Moment is the story of popular morning-show anchor Eliza Blake whose seven-year-old daughter is snatched from summer camp. The story is full of suspects, from the convicted pedophile, to the obsessed fan, to the delusional mother. Rather than waiting for the FBI and local police to solve the case, Eliza convenes her friends and colleagues to track down their own leads, dedicating themselves to finding the little girl before it's too late.

About the premise of the book, Mary Jane stated, "Now that my kids are grown and my dad is 81 years old, it seemed like a good time to face my

fears, harvest some of his memories and write a story of a kidnapping which incorporates some of the aspects of his long ago cases."

"Clark has

perfected the

suspense novel, where in classic Christie fashion,

everyone IS

a potential

suspect!'

--Booklist

Mary Jane's college experiences, including her time in Sigma Kappa, helped to shape her into a successful career woman. She was unsure about joining a sorority at first but decided to go through recruitment and chose Sigma Kappa because she felt the most at home there. "Even though we had a lot of fun, we still knew we had to pay attention to our classes and assignments. We were very close and loyal to one another."

Mary Jane is still in touch with a number of her Sigma Kappa sisters, traveling a few times a year to their children's weddings and other functions. She also enjoys seeing sisters at her book signing and promotional events. "I treasure the friendships I have made through Sigma Kappa," she said. Mary Jane Clark is truly an example of how hard work, persistence, and following your dreams can lead to great accomplishments.

At A Time Katie L. Kelso helps provide hope and happiness to sick children Katie L. Kelso, Beta Upsilon, Ohio University, always loved helping others. As a young girl, she told her mother that she wanted a job "that is necessary- that we couldn't move forward without." Katie has gotten her wish, so to speak. As the Events Coordinator for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central Ohio, she coordinates and executes the major internal events that provide the funds to continue the organization's mission: granting the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.

Katie's first experience with the MakeA-Wish Foundation was in high school when her senior class decided to raise funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation at the school's Valentine's Day dance. Katie was named "Queen of Hearts" for raising more money for the Foundation

Sign'\a Kappa Triang le • Summe r 2008

than any other student. "As a class we were able to grant nearly two wishes. Since that opportunity, Make-A-Wish has been near and dear to my heart."

In college, Katie was able to create her own major of Promotional Event Planning through the Specialized Studies program at Ohio University. She worked with faculty from the Schools of Business, Journalism and Communication to determine which courses to take and what career path to follow. Upon graduation, Katie accepted a post-graduate internship with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and impressed her employers so much that she was hired for a full-time position shortly thereafter.

Of working at Make-A-Wish, Katie said her favorite part of the job is helping

provide an integral element in a sick child's life: hope. She also serves as a volunteer on local wishes outside of her professional responsibilities. "As a person who has always believed in the power of dreaming big," said Katie, "the opportunity to provide these children, who are going through extraordinary circumstances, with a chance to make their dreams come true is incredibly rewarding."

When asked about her most memorable wish, Katie thought back to a brother and sister from Athens, Ohio named Grant and Lauren, who have been diagnosed with a disease so rare that they are two of only 11 people in the world known to have it. The Ohio University Greek community, through its Greek Week activities, had already sponsored Grant's wish to visit Walt Disney World with his family. However, Lauren was still patiently waiting for her wish to meet the cast of High School Musical to be granted.

A few months after the family returned from Walt Disney World, Katie's office received the call that Lauren and her family were going to be flown to California for the premiere of High School Musical 2 and a private meetand-greet party with the cast. Lauren had her picture taken with Zac Efron and the rest of the cast and got to walk the red carpet with them at the premiere. "In all of her pictures, she has the largest smile on her face. It is

hard not to feel good about knowing that I had a little to do with bringing that joy to her life."

Katie shared that her Sigma Kappa experience helped shape who she is today, not only personally, but in her career as well. While in college, Katie honed her event planning abilities while serving as Foundation chairman, organizing the chapter's annual golf classic fundraiser. She also says that simply being in a group with so many different personality types helped her learn teamwork and listening skills.

Katie Kelso far left, with memorable wish child Lauren, front, and other MakeFonndarion staff.

ww·w .signu.kappa.org

Katie continues to draw on her Sigma Kappa experiences in her personal and professional life.

Given how she chooses to spend her time, Katie is passionate about people getting out and volunteering their time and efforts to help others. Her advice for anyone looking to start volunteering is to "consider what your interests are and what you are passionate about. If you are interested in helping the earth or animals, look into your local Sierra Club or Humane Society for opportunities to give back. If you are looking for a way to get started, volunteermatch.org is a great source that will help you identify organizations in your area that match your interests." Katie plans to continue her involvement with the Make-A-Wish Foundation for many years to come.

Recent Sigma Kappa alumnae are dedicating their time to

improving the lives of children across the United States

For most college seniors, post-graduation plans include getting a good job, maybe moving to a new city or state, possibly doing some traveling, and beginning their professional lives. Others decide to spend their time after college working to improve the world around them. Teach For America is one program that gives recent graduates the opportunity to make an immediate impact on future generations. Several Sigma Kappa sisters have chosen to become a part of Teach For America to help positively affect children in low-income areas.

While majoring in sociology at State University of New York at Geneseo, Meaghan Colligan, Theta Pi, spent many hours studying educational inequity in the United States and the

subsequent issues which result, such as reduced earning potential and lack of voter participation. Meaghan had plans to attend law school after completing her undergraduate degree, and while researching law schools, she stumbled across Teach For America. The more Meaghan learned about the organization and its values, the more convinced she became that she should join their efforts. Of her decision, she shared, "I came to the conclusion that before I learn any more from books about the reality of educational equality ... I need to work in the trenches."

Teach For America is a corps of approximately 6,200 recent graduates who commit two years of their lives to teaching in low-income communities across the country. Corps

members come from a wide variety of academic majors, but all are united in one goal: to advance the academic achievement of students in low-income communities.

Prior to classroom placement, a corps member spends approximately 30 hours in independent work and observation of experienced teachers. This time is followed by an intensive five-week training institute and regional orientation. The training institute consists of summer school classroom experience supplemented by seminars, practice sessions, and invaluable feedback from veteran teachers.

Brittany Langdon, Theta Rho, University of Kentucky, was on a completely different educational and career path when she became interested in Teach For America. While in college, she earned a dual degree in Broadcast Journalism and Political Science. Brittany was motivated to join Teach For America because she "always held the belief that all children can accomplish great successes in life - regardless of where they come from. "

Brittany spent the summer training in Phoenix, Arizona and was placed in Indianapolis, Indiana, where she will be teaching seventh and eighth grade reading tllis fall. Of her time in Phoenix, Brittany stated, "While I was there, I taught freshman English, and the experiences I had with those children were amazing. I had kids who said that no one had ever told they

All but one student, a thirteen-year-old boy named D'Angelo, who had spent three years in the fifth grade, showed improvement in test scores during the five-week summer school session.

On the final day of school, Meaghan asked to give a closing speech to

Eight exemplary women will be taking to the road this fall as traveling field consultants. The alumnae who make up the 2008-2009 field consultant team will give the next year or two of their lives for the betterment of our chapters nationwide.

Collegiate and alumnae members will have the opportunity to work, communicate, share, enjoy, and most importantly, have fun with these amazing women. Sigma Kappa field consultants have the opportunity to work one-on-one with members of national council and serve as a liaison to both national volunteers and national headquarters.

Sign1a Kappa Triangle • Summer 2008

The women who will be working with the collegiate chapters are professional staff members. Their objective is to ensure the success of all our chapters. "I hope to bring a sense of empowerment," said consultant Tori Caracciolo. "I want the women I visit to feel like they can and do make a difference in the lives of their chapter sisters and in Sigma Kappa as a whole."

Field consultants can dedicate as many as two years traveling for Sigma Kappa. Second year consultant Sarah Place said, "I am excited to continue another year and see the significant impact my experiences from last year can have on the chapters I work with this year."

Originally known as "traveling secretaries," field consultants have been transcontinental travelers since 1938, packing their suitcases and laptop bags and boarding planes, trains, and automobiles to continue to educate collegians everywhere. The Sigma Kappa field consultant program is partially supported through a grant from the Sigma Kappa Foundation. The dollars that undergraduates and alumnae give to the Foundation can be directly linked to helping the organization grow stronger.

These eight young women began their field consultant experience in Indian Wells, California, at the 83rd National Convention. This once in a lifetime opportunity allowed the women to teach and to learn, to face unique challenges that will assist them later in their careers, and to develop friendships with sisters throughout the country.

The field consultant program provides support to our collegiate chapters in a number of ways. The consultants offer training to undergraduate women in chapter operations and leadership, development and programming, recruitment, financial management, public relations, and ritual.

The journey for these women began nearly four months prior to convention with an extensive interview weekend at national headquarters in late February. Following convention, they returned to national headquarters in July for two weeks of in-depth training to prepare them for life as a field consultant. Consultant Shannon Kelly said, "I am excited to see Sigma Kappa chapters in different parts of the country and to see how similar we all are despite our geographical distances." The women hit the road to visit collegiate chapters in early August.

Sigma Kappa field consultants serve as teachers, cheerleaders, confidants, managers, and of course, friends. They will be welcomed with open arms by women whom they have never met and will leave with lifelong friendships and treasured memories. The eight women that make up the 2008-2009 traveling consultant team are knowledgeable, enthusiastic, friendly, and eager to make a difference in the lives of each and every Sigma Kappa sister.

We LOVE the '90s A de~ade of Delta Nu alumnae reconnect to relive memories, look to the future

Alumnae and collegians of Delta Nu, Longwood University, gathered for a photo at the Decade of the '90s reunion.

In April 2008, Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia, held a "Decade of the 90's Reunion." The event was sponsored by the University and invited all alumni who graduated in that decade back to Farmville for the weekend. 1\vo Delta Nu alumnae, Emily Carter Mathias and Joanna Mahoney Smith, decided to make the event a Sigma Kappa reunion as well. They collected e-mails for as many Delta Nu sisters as they could possibly find,

mostly from new member classes in the early 1990s. Joanna then sent an electronic invitation to the group six months in advance so they would have plenty of time to make arrangements. Everyone could view the invitation, see RSVPs, and get excited about the event. That is how thirteen Sigma Kappa alumnae, along with their families, found themselves together for a special weekend at Longwood.

Alumnae of Delta Nu enjoyed seeing fellow sisters from the 1990s.

The University hosted several events for the alumnae, including a Greek open house. When the women walked into the familiar chapter room of the Sigma Kappa house, they were greeted with a warm welcome by the active Delta Nu sisters.

The Delta Nu collegians came out in full force for the event, providing snacks and setting out old scrapbooks for the alumnae to peruse while laughing and sharing stories from their college days.

The Delta Nu alumnae loved finding their pictures in old composites and watching home videos the collegians had found in the storage room. Because the videos were not dated, the collegians had been playing them at alumnae events, always

hoping someone would know more about them. As it happened, Judi Weiler-Laboy, a 1991 initiate in attendance, had filmed the videos. They contained footage of the 1990s alumnae receiving gifts after initiation and participating in a campus-wide lip synch competition.

The collegiate members of Delta Nu enjoyed seeing the faces from the video, now 15 years older with husbands and children! The alumnae chuckled at the video, especially the dated hairstyles and fashions. At the end of the event, the chapter held a sisterhood candlelight ceremony.

The collegians encouraged all the alumnae to come back and visit any time. Everyone had a wonderful experience seeing the familiar sights of the University and getting to know their newest sisters. The alumnae hope to continue meeting every few years, either at Longwood or at a different location in Virginia.
