Side Effects of Steroids BALDNESS can be caused by steroid
abuse. Because of how steroids act on the limbic
system in the brain, MOOD SWINGS, including homicidal rage, can occur.
Taking “roids” can cause PIMPLES to pop up (body acne)
Females who take steroids can become more MASCULINE. Their voices can deepen.
Side Effects Continued… A condition called ATHEROSCLEROSIS
can be caused by steroid use. This condition can lead to a HEART ATTACK or STROKE.
When the body’s hormone balance is disrupted by taking steroids, males can develop BREASTS, a condition called GYNECOMASTIA.
Increased levels of hormones signal bones to STOP growing.
Ergogenic Aids Dietary supplements that are marketed as
promoters of muscle conditioning are called performance aids or ergogenic aids
Some are safe but ineffective, some are both unsafe and ineffective
Manufacturers of these products do not have to prove their products are safe or effective before offering them on the open market
These products that are ineffective or unsafe may be removed but after the product is “tested” on the buying public
CreatineCREATINE Legal supplement containing amino acids
and often sold in powders The body’s natural form of creatine is
generated by the kidneys and stored in muscle cells (you can consume more by eating more meat) ATP loses a phosphate during high intensity
exercise, taking creatine is like a reservoir that supplied more phosphates= lengthier more intense sessions
ASSIGNMENT Using the information posted on my
wikispace (NIDA report and Mind over Matter) as well as the website http://kidshealth.org/teen/food_fitness/sports/steroids.html answer the following questions:
1. What are anabolic steroids? 2. What are some slang names for
steroids? 3. Why do people use steroids? 4. What is testosterone and what does it
do?
CONT’D… 5. What is DHEA and what does it do? 6. Specifically how do anabolic steroids
work? 7. What are the main dangers associated
with steroid use? Specific risks for males? Specific risks for females?
8. What is “roid rage”? 9. What do the terms “stacking” and
“cycling” mean when referred to steroid use?
10. What is HGH and why is it prescribed?
SELECT ONE CELEBRITY… Using information provided on my wikispace or your own
research select one celebrity who has been associated with steroid use. Write at least half a page report discussing:
1. The athlete and their background in the sport, the amounts of training they have done, how much of their life was devoted to their sport…provide a biography.
2. Discuss their successes in their sport and how that affected them (were there pressures to succeed, what was their frame of mind about success…)
3. What happened to them when they got caught, what facts were presented, was there any sentencing, …discuss the fallout for them, their family, their sense of self, their public image, their health.
