Bus Stop Safety Tips It’s back to school for many of the kids in our neighborhood, and that means it’s time to review bus stop safety expectations with your children. Here are some good reminders for keeping your kids safe at bus stops. Be Wise Pedestrians If your children walk to their bus stop, remind them to keep to the sidewalks. Kids at stops should also be reminded not to play in the street but to keep to the driveway or sidewalk. And it’s never a bad idea to have a parent escort. Don’t Talk to or Approach Strangers Remind your kids that they should not talk to strangers, and they should NEVER approach strangers. Any unknown adult who tries to engage with children at bus stops should be immediately reported to a parent, bus driver, teacher or school administrator. Have Belongings Prepared Remind or help your children to get everything they need in their backpacks prior to leaving for the bus stop, and encourage them to leave everything in their backpacks on the bus. Tell your child that, if they do drop something while getting on or off the bus, they should tell the bus driver and wait for instructions prior to trying to retrieve it. Be Aware of Traffic Children should look to the right before exiting the bus to check for traffic. They should also look both ways before crossing the street to check for traffic. If you plan to meet your child(re) at the bus stop, wait on the side where they get off so they don’t rush across the street without looking in their excitement to see you. Be at the Stop Five Minutes Early It’s important for kids to be at their bus stop when the bus arrives rather than inside a house or car, even in cold weather. Dress them appropriately, and have them at the stop 5 minutes prior to your scheduled time. How to Prepare Your Home for Winter It may not seem like it in these dog days of summer, but winter is coming. Here’s how to get your home ready.

The Sterling Hills HOA Newsletter, August 2016Page 2

Inspect and Clean Gutters and Unhook HosesOnce the leaves have fallen from the trees, you’ll want to take a look at your gutters and ensure their ready for winter precipitation. Fall is the time to make any repairs and to clean out any debris before the weather gets icy. Unhook hoses well before a freeze to avoid burst pipes.Freshen Up Your Home’s PaintIs your home itching for a new coat of paint? Fall is a great time to refresh your home’s paint job before temperatures get too cold. The book of approved colors is available at Sherwin Williams (ask for the Sterling Hills or Winterset books), or you can view a copy online via NextDoor in the Documents section.Schedule a Furnace InspectionYou don’t want to find out your furnace is on the fritz during the first cold snap of the year. Schedule an inspection before the weather gets cold to ensure your furnace is working safely and efficiently.Winterize Your HomeFall is the best time to seal gaps and cracks around doors and windows that let in cold air and let warm air out during winter. Making sure your home is well-sealed can save you money on your energy bills as well as keep your family more comfortable.Have Your Fireplace Inspected and CleanedIf you use or plan to use your fireplace, make sure to have it inspected every year to ensure it’s clean and that any necessary repairs are taken care of prior to building that first crackling fire of the season. Check your Sidewalks and DrivewayFall is the time to repair the walks and railings leading to your entryways and your driveway prior to icy weather, when problems could turn into hazards. Sidewalks with greater than 1-inch difference in grade can be reported to Lee’s Summit Public Works at 816-969-1800. Perform a Home Safety CheckTest your smoke & carbon monoxide alarms (preferably monthly), and inspect or install fire extinguishers (at least one in the kitchen and ideally one centrally located on each floor of your home). Review emergency plans with your family. If you need help creating a plan, visit www.ready.gov/make-a-plan.

Remember to Stop for School Buses! Remember, passing school buses is both dangerous and against the law, so please be

patient and wait until the bus’ stop sign has been put down and the bus has started moving again before you continue on your way.

Together, we can keep our neighborhood safe!
