A while ago I spotted a request on one of the online Genealogy Forums, someone was
wondering if he was related to the Crewe family of Cheshire. His ancestor was a
Stephen Crewe born c !"# in Chester. A search for a baptism found the only match
was the son of $andle Crewe and Sarah.
In !% Stephen was wor&ing as a gun filer, which was 'ery different to the status of
the Crewe family of Cheshire.
(he census records ha'e ) Ste'en Crewe *+ gun barrel filer born City of Chester, his
wife ary Crewe aged *% was born -irmingham as were their daughters Charlotte "
and Sarah Ann aged *In ec quarter !*/ Stephen Crewe and ary Ann Hadley were married in the 0est
-romwich district. I suggested that the marriage certificate was needed to be sure of
his father, and when that arri'ed it re'ealed that Stephen Crewe, 1Gun -arrel Filer1
was the son of 1$andle Crewe, Gentleman.
ore searching re'ealed that Stephen had three siblings, all were baptised at St
2swalds, Chester, but little Charles died 3ust a few days after he was born.

?icar of >ongdon, he was unmarried , aged ! and had been born at -arthlomely
Cheshire. A little bit of ;Googling; and I found that Charles was the son of the $e'$andulph Crewe, and had been born before his father mo'ed to Hawarden.
In the 7orth 0ales Chronicle dated 4une !%* the notice of his death was
published.
On the 26thult (May) aged 84 at Longton Vicarage, Worcestershire the Rev harles

0as there an issue with the will, was it not pro'ed till !5+, could this be the reason
why his children were ;down on their luc&;
A search for $andulph Crewe in the census drew a blan&, not surprising as I later
found he had been transported in !/! on the con'ict ship -engal erchant. thereBs
no doubt that it is Stephens brother, the age, place of birth and the fact that he was
also in the gun trade in -irmingham are all to much to be a coincidence.
