10 Pathways to Success

Page 13: STEP UP TO - Study in Australia | Pathway to UNSW · PDF filedeveloped an outstanding international reputation ... Course dates and fees (UFS) ... of World Universities in Engineering

Before entering UNSW Foundation Studies, you will need to have reached a minimum level of English language proficiency. If you have English qualifications other than the ones listed below, you may still apply to enter these programs. Other English qualifications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Note 1: English language tests should normally have been taken within 12 months of the commencement date. The marginal rules below nominate exceptions to this rule.

Note 2: For all UFS programs listed in the table above, individual sub-scores must be 5.0 or greater for Standard Plus, Standard and Transition programs.

Note 3: The English language requirements may be satisfied by successful completion of full-time secondary or tertiary studies or equivalent qualification, with a duration of at least one year from an approved institution.

* IELTS: International English Language Testing System. Tests are conducted at a number of locations around the world, including UNSW Institute of Languages at UNSW in Australia.

** TOEFL: Test of English as a Foreign Language. A TOEFL score is not acceptable without the Test of Written English (TWE) for paper-based and computer-based tests or Writing for Internet-based tests. UNSW Institute of Languages is registered as a test site for the TOEFL iBT.

Marginal rules (out of date English results) – UFS will accept all IELTS results that expire within 1-month of the program

start date (i.e. 13 months old).

– If the result is 0.5 higher than the overall program requirement, including the writing requirement (eg for Standard and Standard+ IELTS 6.0 with Writing 5.5), then UFS will accept a result taken within 18 months of the program start date (i.e. 6 months after 1-year expiry date).

– If the result is 1.0 higher than the overall program requirement, including the writing requirement (eg for Standard and Standard+ IELTS 6.5 with Writing 6.0), then UFS will accept a result taken within 24 months of the program start date (i.e. 12 months after 1-year expiry date).

– If the result is 1.0 higher than the overall program requirement, including the writing requirement (e.g. for Standard and Standard+ IELTS 7.0 with Writing 6.5), then UFS will accept the result regardless of when the English qualification was gained or the test was taken.

I have four beautiful children and early on, my husband and I made a promise that we would provide them with the best possible education that we could afford.

A parent perspective

We sent all our children to an international school in Myanmar, which gave them a great start in life.

When it came to their tertiary education, the decisions were much harder.

I believe my children are modern. They are a part of a dynamic generation who reflect the new social and business values that are becoming increasingly visible in Myanmar. I also want my children to be aware of their cultural heritage. As a family, we discuss these traditional values and Buddhist beliefs, but the importance of an international education was still paramount to their future.

When selecting a country, I wanted to be able to see them during semester breaks. I looked at living costs, standard of accommodation, safety and my overall peace of mind once I was separated from them.

As I investigated options, I discovered that Australia was close to home, safe, welcoming, offered a good lifestyle and had many outstanding universities. I also realised that a pathway program, which provided a good academic introduction and local classroom experience, was going to be essential if my children were to succeed.

After considering all the options, I chose the UNSW Foundation Studies program in Sydney. Not only did the range of subjects and teaching standards appeal, but the guaranteed place in a degree course at UNSW (Australia) meant I wouldn’t have to move my children to another university.

My eldest son is currently enrolled in the UNSW Foundation Studies course. My two daughters have successfully graduated from UNSW and are now back home working in the family business. They tell wonderful stories of their friends, the class activities, the great teachers, vegemite, events on campus, good restaurants and Sydney’s beaches.

My youngest son, who’s 11, is so excited. He’s already looking forward to studying at UNSW and can’t wait to go to Sydney and experience it all for himself.

Living in SydneySydney is a beautiful city surrounded by a harbour, sandy beaches, national parks and mountain ranges.

You can play outdoor sports and go bushwalking or camping all year round. The air is clean and the lifestyle is energetic. It’s no wonder that Sydney is consistently ranked #1 city in the world for both travel and study. In 2015 Sydney was ranked by The Economist as one of the safest cities in the world and the safest in Australia.

Sydney is famous for the diversity of its food scene and for its cafe culture. With thousands of restaurants, cafés and bars, the range of cuisine and fresh food is outstanding. Sydney also boasts excellent shopping with both high-end luxury and budget options.

Food and shopping

Our warm and sunny climate is perfect for a healthy outdoor lifestyle. Summer runs from December to February, autumn (fall) from March to May, winter from June to August and spring from September to November. January and December are the hottest months and winters are generally mild.

Climate

The easiest way to get to and from UNSW is by public transport with Sydney’s modern buses and trains. In some areas, the city is also serviced by ferries and trams. Sydney is also an easy city to explore on foot–in fact many of Sydney’s most beautiful beaches are within walking distance of UNSW.

Sydney is also an ideal base to explore the rest of Australia – it’s easy to hop on a train to the Blue Mountains or fly to Melbourne, the Gold Coast and beyond.
