STEP BY STEP – MAGAZINE COVER
ANISAH SHAH
MAIN BACKGROUND IMAGE:For the background image, I used a picture that I found online on a copyright free website. The details stated that it is a royalty free image and thus, I went ahead and decided to use it – but I did manipulate the image to fit the criteria that I had planned for my magazine cover .
Original image
Here I increased the image saturating and hue settings to make it look more sci-fi.
For the final image, I increased the sharpness and lowered the temperature to make it look more grainy and give it a space like effect.
Then I took a mid shot of the main character and by using the lasso tool, omitted the background and added it as a layer on the background that I had manipulated before.
After completing the main base of the magazine cover, I move on to adding other layers to make it look more like a magazine. I create a rectangle and then add an extra part on the bottom right for an extra image that I will add on later. I keep the colour blue to go with the sci-fi theme
I decided to name my magazine ‘The Odyssey’ as it stand for “A long wandering or voyage usually marked by many changes of fortune. An intellectual or spiritual wandering or quest” – I felt like this fit perfect, sounds optimistic and could appeal to all age groups.
For the magazine tagline I decided to go with ‘The award winning sci-fi magazine’.
I then changed this and added ‘Winner best magazine 2013’ as well.
I changed the tagline and I also added a grey translucent rectangle as a base for text.
I added the text ‘Now in Theatres’ since this text has come across many magazine covers that I have looked at.
Next I added Cover Lines on the right side. I decided to use these Cover Lines from the list that I had decided to choose text from.
Next I added the movie name, R3. While experimenting with Photoshop Illustrator, I came across the 3D effect and further tried to manipulate different designs and was able to form the movie name.
Here I added the alliteration; Repeat, Relapse, Rewind under the movie name so that the movie name, R3 makes sense to those who will not be familiar with it.
Next, I added the pictures of the current existing films to go along with their cover lines. I got these images from google.com .
Following that, I added the cover lines that I had finalised from my potential cover lines. I advertised other existing movies since majority of film magazines advertise more than one films on the cover of their magazine.
Current movies that I advertised on the cover:• Guardia
ns of the Galaxy
• Star Wars
• The Hunger Games
• Antman
I picked these films because they all are well known sci-fi films
Next I created a barcode using an online barcode generator.I used the website : http://barcode.tec-it.com/en
Using this website, I created my barcode and placed it on the bottom right corner.
The magazine cover lacked more cover lines so I added a few more on the bottom left.
After getting some audience feedback, I realised £19.99 is too much for a magazine and thus, I decreased it back to £9.99. After evaluating my audience feedback, I also realised that my target audience did not mostly like the magazine tagline and so, I changed it back to just ‘The Award Winning Sci-Fi Magazine’.
