Crime: What is it good for?
Step #1 and #2
• DESCRIBE each of the 5 crimes you have chosen• Act as though you are the attorney and I am the
jury• Where was the crime committed?• When was it committed?• Why was it committed (motive)?• How was the principal actor caught?• What specific evidence was used to convict or
acquit.
Imagine this…. It is almost Christmas in your wonderful and happy
home. You come home to your dad, who has been waiting for you.
He went shopping for presents earlier, and calls you over to give
you an “early Christmas present…”
Crime Against a Person: Murder
And then your own father strangles you to death… Ronald Gene Simmons
made the week of Christmas in 1987 into one of the bloodiest family-killing rampages in history killing 14 family
members and 2 others…
Ronald Claus

came over for the holiday, he took the opportunity to shoot and kill them12-28-1987 he drove into town and
killed 2 more people, injuring 4 others
Step #3
• Describe the punishment that the principal actor received.
• If they were acquitted or wrongfully convicted, explain why
• There HAS to have been a trial in order for you to complete this step. DO NOT choose a crime for which there has not yet been a trial (example: The Craiglist Killing in Ohio)
"You have destroyed me, and you have destroyed my trust in you . . . I will see you in Hell.“ –R.S said to his daughter
that he raped and fathered a child with after she revealed her predicament to people….
He acted his killing spree out after his wife wanted a divorce. He stored the bodies soaked in kerosene pilled
up in his living room or he hid them wrapped in plastic in abandoned cars down the street…
The police found all the bodies and the evidence/weapons (guns, crowbar, hammer, bodies) after they followed him home December 28th, 1987. Bill Clinton issued his death warrant. Simmons was convicted, sentenced to
death, and willing to die. He never appealed, was hated in jail, and killed by lethal injection June 25,
1990.
Ronald Gene Simmons: Punishment
Step #4
• Analyze the punishment.• Did the punishment fit the crime?• Why or why not?• Does this show that our justice system is
working or does it prove that the system may need some refining?
Justice was sort of served in Simmons case. He was killed after he killed 16 people (an eye for
and eye). However, he wanted to die and chose a less severe way of doing so… Since his death, no more families have been massacred
during Christmastime…
Justice?
Imagine walking to a friend’s house and a stranger walks up to you and pulls out a scissors
threatening to kill you….
Crime Against a Person: Rape
And then brutally rapes you in broad daylight, as cars drive by… Anferney
Fontenet did this to a 26 year old cane wielding, meek, autistic woman.
People honked and a few called 911 BUT NO ONE stopped to help. He even
stole her cell phone, and as she was asking everyone who passed by for
help, they ignored her pleas and kept on walking…
Evidence: Numerous eyewitnesses, victim, weapon (scissors)
Crime Against a Person: Rape
And Help!
PLEASE
Rape: Anferney Fontenet’s Offense January 19, 2010 (Toledo, Ohio)
Anferney witnesses the 26 year old defenseless woman and targets her at random. Using a scissors as a weapon he orders her to get on her knees and proceeds to rape her in broad daylight on a busy Toledo street. The bystander effect causes people to blatantly ignore the crime happening in right in front of them…
He pleaded “no contest” to the rape and aggravated robbery charges and though 15 when the crime occurred, was moved up to
be tried in an adult court because he was consciously aware of his horrid actions. He
was sentenced to 20 years in a penitentiary.
"I just want this scumbag off the streets... I would really be disgusted with the court system if they don't lock him up. I think he should be treated as an adult and a registered sex offender.“
–Victim
Fontenet was 15 years old and a student at Start High School when he committed rape/robbery. He could have been tried as a juvenile and sentenced to one to three
years in detention or held until age 21. In his case, justice was served. He knew the crime he was committed.
Fontenet was tried as an adult an sentenced to serve 20 years for his actions.
Justice?
May 2008 (Little, Rock Arkansas)Aaron Jones destroyed his families home because he was in debt
and needed the money (insurance company). Claimed that people came in, bound him, and started the fire when he really just started it to collect the insurance payoff….
Evidence: • Pair of underwear that were urine-soaked Defense tried to
use it to show that he was scared because of the “home invasion” (Did NOT Work)
• House (burned down)• Duct Tape (fake home invasion)• 50 witnesses on the Prosecution (debt, neighbors witness)
Crime Against Property: Arson
• Convicted of Fraud (Insurance) and Arson• Found guilty September 28, 2008 and
sentenced to 10 Years in a Federal Prison• Pay 1.3 million to Insurance Company for
Fraud• $120,000 in punitive damages
Crime Against Property: Arson
Justice?Justice was served in this case. Aaron Jones committed a serious
crime because he was horribly in debt and needed the money. However, he knew his actions and started his own house on fire to
collect the insurance payment. When he was caught he then proceeded to create an elaborate lie that failed to prove his
innocence to the jury, therefore he deserved his 10 year sentence and large amount of fins ( roughly $1,500,000). He will surely
never commit such crimes again…..
March 26, 2010 (Lacrosse, WI) Elderly lady wakes up to
gunpoint, cannot call 911, 2 perpetrators terrorize her and order her to fill a bag with her expensive jewelry and stole numerous possessions (7 rings, necklace, coins, purse, television, Toyota Camry)
Crime Against Property: Robbery
Her Grandson, Jonathan Anderson, 25, orchestrated the crime.
Angel Flores, 17, was the gunman. Both men ransacked the house.Flores, the sun of a drug dealer who survived a
chaotic childhood participated in the crime to prove himself to his brother.
Evidence: stolen possession, Grandmother’s testimony…
Crime Against Property: Robbery
Justice?
Flores was sentenced to 7 years in prison and 3 years on extended supervision
Anderson was sentenced to 12 years in prison and 4 years on extended supervision
Justice was served, both men were convicted in November. Those sentencings are just for the heinous crimes committed by a grandson (and one of his friends) towards his grandmother.
Victimless Crime
• This is a crime where both the principal and the victim are willing participants.
• Drugs• Prostitution
August 18, 2010, Watertown, NYCedricquios A. Grant, 21 possessed cocaine that
appeared to be packaged for resale and had the drug on him when he met with his parole officer at the Dulles State Office Building. He also had marijuana and nine Hydrocodone pills with him. Convicted of POSSESSION…
Victimless Crime: Possession
Sentenced on December 13 to 3.5 years in state prison.
Had previously been sentenced to 1.5 years in May 2010 for attempted sale of cocaine.
For Drug Possession, perpetrators often receive a fine ($100-300) and up to three years in prison (based off of whether or not it is a first offense) So in this case the punishment fit the crime because jail time is worse than a fine and he received almost the maximum amount
Victimless Crime: Possession
Justice?Yes, justice was served (sort of). Grant had already
been convicted of trying to sell drugs last year, so it’s probably safe to say he would do it again. 3.5 years is more than double his last term, so hopefully he will learn his lesson….
