5-E Instructional Model

• was created by a team of educators from the Biological Science Curriculum Study (BSCS) under Principal Investigator Roger Bybee.

• is based on constructivism (a philosophy about learning that proposes learners need to build their own understanding of new ideas).

• describes a teaching sequence that can be used for entire programs, specific units, and individual lessons.

Page 8: STEMscopes Basic Training Thomas W. Campsey Jr. Harlandale ISD Science Coordinator.

Engage:peak student interest and get them personally involved in

the lesson, while pre-assessing prior understanding

• Demonstration• Video Clips• Brainstorming Activities• Starter Activities• Graphic Organizers

(KWL)• Movement• Music• Pre-Assessment

Explore: get students involved in the topic by providing them with a

chance to build their own understanding.

• Experiment– Plan– Design– Construct– Collect Data

• Build a Model• Observe Processes• Focused Play (Manipulatives)• Debate

Explainprovide students with an opportunity to communicate what they have learned so far and incorporate any newly gained

knowledge into their understanding.

• Teacher Prompts– Writing Stems– Guided Questions

• Presentations• Vocabulary Activities• Reading Activities• Formative Assessments

Evaluate is used to determine how much learning and understanding

has taken place.

• Test Prep and Review Activities

• Formal Assessment– Multiple Choice– Numeric (Gridded)– Open Ended– Writing Prompts

• Informal Assessment

Scopes• A scope is a set of resources

for each TEKS that is based on the 5-E lesson cycle.

• Scopes are organized by Grade Level and STAAR Reporting Categories.

• Teachers can search and browse for Scopes in any grade level.

Page 20: STEMscopes Basic Training Thomas W. Campsey Jr. Harlandale ISD Science Coordinator.

• Teacher background is a resource document which gives teachers relevant and essential background knowledge on the science concept being addressed.

• Standards Correlations is an alignment chart of all SCOPE components and activities to the Texas College and Career Readiness Standards, Texas English Language Proficiency Standards, Technology TEKS, and other TEKS subjects.

• Materials list is a customizable Excel Spreadsheet that includes all non-consumable and consumable materials needed to conduct each hands-on inquiry-based activity.

• Answer keys make grading easy.• Scope Summary can be printed to look at a

summary of all resources included in the Scope. • TEKS Unwrapped helps the teacher understand

and dissect the verbs and nouns within each TEKS standard.

Teacher Guide helps the teacher with preparation of the Explore activity; provides facilitation points and blackline masters.

Setup Video is a live-shot video that shows the teacher exactly how to set up and carry-out the Explore hands-on activity.

Page 24: STEMscopes Basic Training Thomas W. Campsey Jr. Harlandale ISD Science Coordinator.

• A list of relevant questions with anticipated student responses to help the class make meaning of the hands-on activity.

• A slide presentation of important vocabulary terms along with a picture and definition.

• Pre-made cards that students can use to create their own science vocabulary based on the content.

• An interactive game that can be played with a class or individually to help students review the vocabulary terms.

• A multiple choice question exam that allows the teacher to assess student progress on mastery of the key concepts in the scope.

Page 25: STEMscopes Basic Training Thomas W. Campsey Jr. Harlandale ISD Science Coordinator.

• An inquiry-based experimental design activity that students must design around the concept.

• A set of ideas and activities for the teacher that can help further elaborate on the concept.

• An expository reading passage about the science concept with comprehension questions.

• A list of trade books aligned to the TEKS objectives for the scope.

• An activity where students apply the science content they have been learning by solving real-world math problems.

• A powerful interactive activity that allows the student to conduct virtual investigations and experiments on the topic.

• An online treasure hunt where students can explore different education and government websites about the concept. Click on the "Web Quest" PDF icon to download the Web Surfing Science handout.

Page 26: STEMscopes Basic Training Thomas W. Campsey Jr. Harlandale ISD Science Coordinator.

• A narrative or expository writing prompt on the science topic in the format of the writing STAAR.

• A multiple choice question assessment designed to mimic performance on the STAAR Science test for that specific TEKS

• An interactive game that can be played with a class or individually to help students review the science concepts related to the TEKS.

• A short-answer and essay assessment to evaluate student mastery of the concept.

• A rubric-based performance assessment that asks the student to construct, design, or create something around the concept.

Page 27: STEMscopes Basic Training Thomas W. Campsey Jr. Harlandale ISD Science Coordinator.

• A teacher guide that shows the teacher how to administer a small- group lesson to students who need intervention on the topic.

• A fill-in-the-blank and conceptual blackline master for students to use as the intervention is being conducted.

• A multi-format quiz that allows the teacher to retest students after intervention has been administered to determine mastery of the concept.

• A challenging real-life scenario that students must solve using knowledge and skills developed from mastery of the concept.

• An activity where students use a form of visual art expression such as sculpture, painting, or drawing to express mastery of the topic.
