Hydrate to prevent heat strokeIn response to the prediction ofvery hot weather for the next fewweeks, the start of school athlet-icsprogrammesandwith thehar-vest season in full swing, theWestern Cape GovernmentHealth is reminding people of thefollowing guidelines to help pre-vent heat stroke and exhaustion:

) Babies, the elderly and peopleworking or exercising in a hot envi-ronment are at particular risk forheat stroke/exhaustion;

) People using chronic medica-tion need to drink extra water dur-ing heat waves to ensure that theirkidneys are not further stressed.

General prevention (All Ages):) Stay out of the sun if at all possi-

ble, if not wear a large hat to protectthe head from the sun, use an um-brella to add shade;

) Use a small wet towel or clothunder hats or on shoulders to helpkeep cool;

) Stay hydrated – in the currenttemperatures, staying hydrated ismost important – drink asmuchwa-ter as you need; and

) Always carry water with you.) Should you use a chronic medi-

cation, such as high blood pressureor diabetes medication rememberthatbecomingdehydratedplacesex-tra stress on the kidneys, drink am-ple clean water;

) Use the rehydration solution ifyou are thirsty even though you aredrinking water;

) Mix the following together in aclean bottle 1F water, 8 teaspoonssugar and½ a teaspoon of salt. Thisis safe for all ages to drink especiallyfor those people who work or exer-cise outdoors, suchas childrenprac-tising athletics and road or farmworkers;

) Ensure that the elderly and in-firm have easy access to water.

Tips for Babies:) Breastfeed on demand – breast

milk is all that babies younger thansix months require, you need notgive the baby water or tea to ‘cooldown’ they only need breastmilk, asbaby needs it;

) Breastfeeding moms must re-member to drink extra water, coldrooibos tea also makes a refreshingand healthy drink;

) Take your baby to the clinic atthe first sign of diarrhoea and/orvomiting;

) Keep babies in the shade or in-doors;

) Wipe baby down with a cleandampcloth– thiswillhelpkeepthemcool;

) Do not cover babies in a lot ofclothingandblankets; light clothingis sufficient.

Tips for children:) Keep babies and children in the

shade;) Avoid sports activities if possi-

ble, if sport is essential; ensure thatthere is a lot of water and rehydra-tion solution available;

) Children must wear hats andsunblock;

)Keep children indoors between11:00 and 16:00.

TipsForthoseworkingoutside:) This is for sports people, teach-

ers and/or coaches and employersof builders, gardeners and others re-quired to work outside;

) Keep your head covered, placea wet cloth under your hat to helpkeep cool;

) Make sure that there is lots ofcool, clean water to drink

) Take regular, short breaks inthe shade

) When taking a break, pour wa-

ter over your head to help the bodycool down;Symptoms of heat exhaustion/

stroke:) Heat stroke can be fatal and

should be treated as amedical emer-gency. Heat exhaustion is a less se-vere condition but can quicklyprogress to heat stroke if left un-treated. Heat exhaustion and heatstroke occur when the body is una-ble to lower its temperature to nor-mal levels through the skin or bysweating;

) Dehydration can cause heatstroke because the body is unable tosweat fast enough to dissipate theheat.

Signs of heat exhaustion in-clude:

) Nausea or vomiting;) A pale skin colour;) Tiredness and weakness;) Headache;) Muscle cramps and dizziness;) If the symptoms are severe or

the victim has a heart condition orhigh blood pressure, seek urgentmedical help;

) Give the person the oral rehy-dration solution described above.Do not add too much salt – the mix-ture should taste like tears. Sportsdrinks or commercial oral rehydra-tion solution are also effective. If thesymptoms worsen or last longerthan an hour, seek urgent medicalattention.Remember:) Childrenunder twoyears are at

high risk of dehydration which canlead rapidly to very dangerous con-ditions. This is even more danger-ous if a child has diarrhoea and/orvomiting. Use the sugar-salt-solu-tion tohelp themnot todryoutwhileyou seek medical attention at yournearest clinic or emergency unit.

What is in a name?Whatshall Inamemynew business? Shall Iname it after myself,for instance “JoeSoap’s Butchery”, orthe townwhere I live,like “KoekenaapBeauty Parlour” orchoose a name thatdescribes what I amdoing, for example“Fix-a-Dent Panelbeaters” or a namethat has some special meaningfor myself.

Onecancertainlynamesomead-vantages and disadvantages toeach of the above, but I believe thattoselectthebestnameitisnecessa-ry to have a long term perspective.

What will happen if Joe Soap’sson or grandson “Andrew” some-day succeeds Joe in the business?Or what if Koekenaap Beauty Par-lour becomes a runaway successand branches out to other towns?The name Koekenaap Beauty Par-lour may sit somewhat uneasy inRondebosch.

Last week I drove behind a vehi-cle advertising a business with avery descriptive name: “Earth-quake Mobile Disco.” The namesays it all. You can almost feel thevibes you can expect should youmake use of their services.

It is also necessary to considera logo or slogan for advertising

yourbusiness.“Wewillrockyou!”willgomuchbetter with Earth-quake Mobile Discothan for example “Mu-sic for the moment.”

A shorter name alsousually works muchbetter than one that istoo long. “Flame’sPlace”ismucheasiertomarket and advertisethan “The Flame and

Grill Pizzeria and Restaurant.” Al-though the longer one is a lot moredescriptive, the shorter one is justso much easier to use, for instancewhen you answer the phone.

The name is also important forbranding purposes. To build abrand usually comes with years ofregular advertising and renderingan excellent product or service.Therefore one can also considerwhetherthenamesignifiesqualityor excellence and whether it isshort and easy to remember.

Add to that the letter type andcolours that you will use for brand-ingpurposesandyou’llrealisethatthere is more to the name of yourbusiness than just putting some-thing on paper. It is important toinvest some time considering, se-lecting and planning the name andbranding of your business.

Are you kissable for V-day?Before puckering up for that Valentine’sDay smooch, take the Kiss-O-Meter chal-lenge and see how your breath scores.

Although bad breath affects around 90%of people at some point, most don’t realisethat they have a problem. And you can’t relyon your bestie to break the bad news – two-thirds of people said they wouldn’t tell afriend that their breath smelt and a thirdwouldn’t even tell their spouse.

Experts say that the most common causeof bad breath is inadequate oral care.

“If plaque and food debris are not physi-cally removed – by correctly brushing, floss-ing and rinsing – they break down in themouth,releasingbadodours,aswellascaus-ing irritation and disease,” says DirnaGrobbelaar, IVO health’s oral hygiene ad-visor.

While most people brush their teeth regu-larly, flossing is often overlooked; 35% ofpeople admitted they “never” floss. “Themouth is not clean until it’s clean in-be-tween,” says Grobbelaar. “If you are in

doubt, take the test – pull a length of flossbetween the teeth and smell it!”

Grobbelaar suggests that if you find floss-ingawkwardor too time-consuming, findaninterdental tool that suits your mouth andlifestyle. “There are many options thesedays, from tiny interdental brushes andfloss handles to high-tech toothpicks withbuilt-in fluoride. Look for Sunstar GUMproducts in pharmacies and dental practic-es; they have the widest range of interdentaltools in South Africa.”

“Brushing correctly twice a day, cleaningthe tongue and interdental cleaning is thekey to the fresh breath confidence thatcomes from a super-clean mouth,” saysGrobbelaar.

To get your ‘kissability’ rating take theKiss-O-Meter challenge on www.face-book.com/ivohealth. For each person tak-ing the Kiss-O-Meter challenge, SunstarGUM will donate a toothbrush to The Tooth-fairies working at the Red Cross War Memo-rial Children’s Hospital.

Louw sê nadat vyf jongmans onlangs in ben-

Dié kortfilm,Change of life, het gehandel oor

Building up to the event I’ve donea lot of gym work and felt really strong onmy feet. With about 1 km to go on the run,I was now only 20 seconds behind Conrad,he made a wrong turn. I called after him, buthe didn’t hear. It’s never a nice way to passsomeone. Claiming my very first Xterra vic-tory today was intense, a surreal experienceand I couldn’t be happier. My next event isXterra Philippines, which will be great prep-

Substitute entries for this year’s Two Oceans Marathon now availableGood news for runners who failedto secure an entry into the 2015 OldMutual Two Oceans Marathon, isthat the substitution entry windowis open between 23 January and 3March.

The substitution entry processprovides runners who can nolonger participate, the opportunityto “hand over” their entry to anoth-er runner. This is an especially val-uable tool for those runners whomissed out on entering but stillhopetomakeit tothehalfmarathonor trail run start line.

According to Carol Vosloo, gen-eral manager of the Two OceansMarathon NPC, substitution en-

tries provide an important logisti-cal function that contributes to ath-letes’ safety on race day.

“Runnerswithdrawforanumberof reasons, but it’s not just a smallmatter of handing your race num-ber over to a friend. Each runner’spersonal profile – which includesimportant medical and emergencyinformation – is linked to his/herrace number, and the substitutionprocess facilitates the linking of anewly-issued number to the newparticipant.”

Vosloo adds that not followingthe proper substitution procedurecould have life-threatening conse-quences, as emergency personnel

relyon theaccuracyof the informa-tionlinkedtoanathlete’sracenum-ber.

“Weareresponsible for thesafetyof over 27 000 runners, and urge allathletes to not only follow the prop-er procedures, but to also take re-sponsibility for the accuracy oftheir personal, emergency andmedical information.”ThesubstitutionentryprocessV The withdrawing runner must

log into the online system and clickon the “substitute” button. Avoucher number will be displayedandanemailcontainingthisvouch-er number will be dispatched.

V Thisvouchernumberplusyour

race number must be forwarded tothenewrunnerwho intends to takeyour entry.

V The withdrawing runner ON-LY gives up his/her entry. The Ra-ceTec Chip and extra purchasesmust still be collected by the run-ner.

V The original entry fee is not re-fundable.

V The new runner must take thevoucher number, log into the on-lineentry systemandclick“Substi-tution”. The withdrawing runner’soriginal race number must also becaptured.

V Once the substitution has beenvalidated, the system will prompt

the new runner for personal andmedical information (if this hasn’talready been completed).

V The cost for a substitution en-try is R80. However, other costsmay still apply, like the cost of acompulsory RaceTec Chip (if thenew runner doesn’t already haveone), a temporary licence fee, etc.

Substitution entries for the ultramarathon will only become active,once entries for the event fill up.There are currently just over 1 500entries available.

Athletes withdrawing their en-tries are encouraged to post messa-ges on the event’s social networkpages.
