Page 1 inclusive innovative inspiring Dear Stella Community Balancing Teenage Life in Senior Years Year 11 students are in the midst of Preliminary Examinations and Year 12 are coming to the end of their scheduled College classes. I would like to remind the girls and families that there are some exceptional supports available for the girls at Stella. Our co-curricular program provides additional study support for students through the Inclusive Learning Department and the Mathematics Stellamatics program at lunch and after school. Our Stella Tutors are providing support to students four afternoons a week. There is no reason why students should not take up these opportuities to improve their learning outcomes. I would encourage senior students in particular to try to balance outside activities, particularly at this time. Paid work is wonderful experience but the girls need to prioritise their learning. Also, commitment to activities outside school need to be kept in balance during the busy examination and stu-vac periods. I encourage families to discuss this with the girls to ensure they are managing this balance effectively. John Lincoln Award @ Government House Today I attended a ceremony to celebrate 25 students in NSW who have achieved the John Lincoln Youth Award for exemplary community service. I was pleased to congratulate Carla Krnel on her achievements both at Stella and in the wider community. Carla was presented with her award by the Governor of NSW, the Honourable Margaret Beasley AO QC. Congratulations to Carla! NAPLAN Families of girls in Years 7 and 9 have received their NAPLAN results this week. In analysing the Stella cohort, the Leadership Team noted the significant improvement that our Stella girls have made from Year 7 to 9. Well done to the girls and the staff who have been working to improve NAPLAN outcomes though targeted programs in English and Maths in particular. Debating The Year 10 Debating team (Holly Nicholson, Olivia Layton, Jessica Dunn and Josephine Kelly) has made it into the Grand Finals of the SDN Debating competition held this Friday at Redlands College against Abbotsleigh. We wish them well in the competition. Congratulations to all the girls in the debating teams who have worked hard this year to improve their skills. Thank you to Ms Hamilton for the guidance of the teams and the English staff who support this co-curricular activity. Our Stella debate teams are entered in the Festival of Speech on the 26th of October at Meriden. Nearly 400 young people from all around Australia received their Gold Award and not only did they meet His Royal Highness Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex KG GCVO, but 17 prominent Australians were there to personally present the Awards on behalf of HRH. Among them were Deborah Thomas, Marc Fennell, Naomi Simson, David Campbell OAM, Indira Naidoo, Jeff McMullen, Janine Perrett, Jayne Azzopardi, Graham Ross VMM, Dawn Fraser AC, Jack Thompson AM, Jeff Loy, Dan Illic, Layne Beachley AO, Kirk Pengilly, Eddie Woo, and Jacinta Tynan.

A massive congratulations to the four Stella Maris girls who received their award at this prestigious event – Jasmine Stein, Ashleigh Broe, Bella Harvey and Rebekah Odgers

NAPLAN Results 2019The College always interprets NAPLAN results in context, which is that of a one-off test designed to give data on large groups rather than to specifically diagnose strengths and challenges in each domain for individual learners. NAPLAN results are used in conjunction with other assessment data to inform teaching and learning.

In Year 7 the majority of students scored in the top 4 bands in all domains of the test. There is a strength in reading and writing in this cohort. The College will continue to focus on all students achieving their predicted learning growth over the next two years and has a strong history in Year 9 of outperforming both Statistically Similar School Groups and State Schools in terms of both Average Scaled Growth and Expected Growth.

The majority of Year 9 students scored in the highest 3 bands in all domains in the testing. Both reading and writing is a significant strength for this cohort with 25% of students in the top 2 Bands for writing and 45% of students in the top 2 Bands for reading. The table below compares Year 9 results with Statistically Similarly School Groups (SSSG) and State Schools (SS) in terms of students in the top 2 Bands for Reading and Writing.

Domain SMC SSSG SS

Reading 45% 38% 25%

Writing 25% 20% 14%

The outstanding achievement for this groups stems from student growth – the most useful information for teaching and learning that comes out of the NAPLAN data. The graph below shows Stella Maris College compared with SSSG and SS in terms of scaled growth across all domains. (Stella Maris College is the green column, SSSG is black and SS red). This learning growth has been consistent for each Year 9 cohort at Stella Maris over the last 5 years. This clearly shows that the teaching and learning at Stella Maris College supports our students in achieving learning growth between Years 7 and 9 that exceeds the growth achieved by both SSSG and State Schools.

If you have concerns with regard to the NAPLAN results or your daughter's ongoing learning, please contact her Head of Year at the College. I also take this opportunity to remind parents of the myriad of opportunities available to your daughters in terms of academic support at the College. Flexible drop-in support is offered by the Inclusive Learning Department both before and after school and specific Maths support through Stellamatics. Stellamatics is available with a Maths teacher on scheduled lunchtimes and afternoons and additionally, the Stella Tutors are available free of charge in the Library every afternoon until 5.30pm to assist students with their work.

It was a very close grand final in the intermediate division against Mt St Benedict. The Stella girls played well, and were unlucky to lose by just 2 points. Well done to all members of both teams:
