Pop Up Pianos 2014 Spreads Music & Art Across Central FloridaBrightly painted pianos appeared across central Florida again as Pop-Up Pianos brought music and art to Seminole County for a second season inMarch 2014, culminating with a piano ‘idol’ contest and auction on April 6 atthe Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center (WDPAC) in Sanford. This artand music event was a collaboration and fund-raiser for the Steinway Society of Central Florida, WDPAC and Seminole Cultural Arts Council (SCAC).

Eleven pianos were painted bylocal artists at the Steinway Piano Galleries and put out across SeminoleCounty to be played in prime locations. The pianos were then transportedto WDPAC for a performance featuring talented students from across the region, and were auctioned off. The Society has expanded its initial program of piano lessons to severalTitle I schools in Seminole County. These include Pine Crest Elementary in Sanford, Casselberry Elementary and SouthSeminole Middle School in Casselberry. The Society provides the lesson plans, electronic music programs and theelectronic pianos for lessons and practice.

Under the oversight of board member Deana Schott and teacher Sylvia Ferguson, the school program complements on-going lessons in six community locations across two counties, where the Society provides the teacher, electronic pianos and assistants. Additional board members on the education committee are Drucilla Engel, Janne Kitchin andGeorge Johnson, with Crystal Taylor, metrics advisor.

The Society provides more than 6,000 lessons annually. Classes are offered in three ten-weeksessions a year in nine locations, with multipleclasses at each. Students range primarily fromkindergarten to ninth grade, with virtually all students attending multiple classes over the year. The results are certainly reflected in the pride ofboth parents and young students as they marktheir improvement in several recitals at each location.
