Building a Championship Season

Volume 74, Issue 44 November 11, 2015

The Estimates of Giving we’ve received in the first two

weeks are encouraging. I am pleased to report we are

currently ahead of last year’s effort (at this point in the

campaign) by almost $88,500 with 30 additional

responses. These results are not from large, new pledges,

but reflect increases across our entire church family for

the coming year. Pledge by pledge, we are building a

championship season for First Church.

What ultimately matters, of course, is where we

end up! We need almost $500,000 to reach our goal.

Schrauner sagely notes, “As the New York Mets

discovered, it is not the early innings of a ballgame that

count.” To successfully fund our ministry, we need “to

collect every possible pledge and continue to score runs

into the late innings of November and December.” Each

commitment, large or small, matters. If you haven’t

returned your card for 2016, please prayerfully do so.

Working together, we can reach our goal!

This Sunday, Rev. Zack Dunlap’s message at our

sanctuary services will be “Send Out Workers!” based

on Luke 10. Zack is appointed to start our new ministry

in Berkley and is receiving training at Christ UMC in Fair

View Heights, Illinois. He’s a fine preacher and we

encourage you to come meet Zack!

Pastor Gary

Randy Schrauner, a clergy colleague in Oklahoma, is a

huge Kansas City Royals fan. He writes that when

to the plate in the 12th inning

of Game 5 of the World

Series, it was his first at-bat in

the entire post-season. What

did Christian do? He hit a

one-out single, driving in the

go-ahead run that ultimately

allowed the Royals to take

home the crown as World

Champions.

Rev. Schrauner writes, “Relying not on individual all-stars

crushing home runs, the Royals instead called up and

relied on every player on the team as together they

chipped singles, stole bases and played clutch defense on

their way to a championship.”

This speaks directly to our church stewardship

effort! First United Methodist does not rely on one or

two “heroes” to fund our budget. Rather, our giving is

grounded on hundreds of individual pledges, as our

congregation sacrificially pours itself into the joyful mission

of the church.

We continue to make progress in our annual stewardship campaign. As of November 9, we

have received 552 responses for the Operating Fund for a total of $1,952,111. Our

campaign goal of $2,437,600 is very much within reach if everyone simply returns an

estimate of their giving. Home Fires has received 285 estimates for a total of $227,890. Help

us to multiply the impact that this church has in our community and in the world!

Telephone calls to wrap up the campaign will be made on Sunday, November 22. If you have

not yet turned in your Estimate of Giving, please do so as soon as possible. You can pick up

an Estimate of Giving card in the church office and at the Welcome Centers, call Holly

The past couple of weeks have been a whirlwind, and I feel like things are just starting to

heat up. I had the opportunity to attend a training event in Springfield, IL led by Scott and

Wendy Chrostek, where some of the takeaways included using your unique gifts, creating

a culture of invitation, sharing leadership, and building community. Paul Nixon, our multi-

site coach, picked up on this community aspect at a meeting at Berkley last Saturday,

noting that we need to be both a worshiping community and a neighborhood center.

This week I will join with others from First Church in attending a Multi-Siting Conference

at Southfield Hope UMC, hearing from seasoned multi-site practitioners from throughout

the jurisdiction. If you’re in town on Sunday, I look forward to seeing many of you in the traditional services at 8:15,

9:30 and 11:00 a.m. God is good—and He is calling workers to gather the harvest that’s been planted. How will you

answer that call and use your unique gifts in service to the Kingdom?

Update from Pastor Zack Dunlap

Hanging of the Greens….Volunteers are needed help put up the Christmas trees and

other decorations around the church. Please come and help dress up our beautiful

church for the Advent season. Contact Lisa Wells ([email protected] or 248-

646-6407 ext. 3137) for more information.

Christmas is Coming...and Something New is Happening! This year beautiful Christmas cactus plants will

arrive at the church during the first two weeks of December. The cactus plants will be long-lasting gifts for our 50+

year members, those who’ve lost a loved one, and our seniors. This wonderful tradition can only continue with your

help in making the deliveries. Please sign up in the church office or contact Elise Norwood (248-646-6407 ext. 3127 or

[email protected]). Thank you!

Boy Scout Greens….Support the Boy Scouts by purchasing your Christmas wreath, evergreen roping, porch pots or

grave blankets from Troop 1032. Order forms are available in the church office. Greens can be picked up at church on

Sunday mornings, November 22, November 29 or December 6. Contact Jennifer Simpson ([email protected])

for more information.

Angel Tree Sunday is November 22. Come to Fellowship Hall and choose your “Angel,” an innocent child with one

or both parents in prison. Buy a Christmas present for them and make them smile. Prison

Fellowship asks that the gift be no more than $40-50 and consist of a Christmas need such as

clothing and something fun. Last year we served about 180 families with 350 “Angels” and about

100 of their siblings. We joyfully made a difference in their lives. Help keep this amazing

tradition going! If you have any questions, please call Kirsten Layer (248-894-7438).

Volunteers are needed to help set tables as well as plate, serve and clean up for our annual Church Conference

dinner on Monday, December 14 in Fellowship Hall. If you are interested, please contact Beckie Bower (248-646-6407

ext. 3144 or [email protected]) for shift times and other details.

Campbell’s Labels for Education and Box Tops for Education are being collected on behalf of Henderson

Settlement. The labels will be used to acquire vehicles for transportation of youth and seniors in their various outreach

programs. Please participate in this worthwhile cause. Just cut and bring your labels to the Here I Am Lord kiosk in

Fellowship Hall on Sunday or to the church office anytime.
