In order to understand the behavior of various hot-rolled and Cold Formed Steel (CFS) structural components and structures, research activities in the area of steel structures was started at CSIR-SERC about three decades back. Steel Structures Laboratory (SSL) is actively involved in number of sponsored research, consultancy and technical services projects involving analysis and design checking, experimental investigations, condition assessment to various government, public and private sector organizations by using Non Destructive Testing and Evaluation (NDT&E) methods. Visual inspection and NDT&E of steel structures are regularly carried out in various power plants and processing industries to detect various forms of defects, including surface corrosion, pitting and intergranular corrosion, surface cracks and imperfections. Failure assessment of steel structures is also carried out based on critical examination of the failed / collapsed structure to understand the root cause and sequence of failure and appropriate retrofitting/strengthening scheme is recommended for implementation. The centre has developed many cutting-edge technologies for the construction industry and also offers various services to public and private sector organisations.
