Dear Parishioners,
Last weekend (in the midst of a heat wave) we had some very special events. At St. Mary Magdalen, we held the annual celebration for the patron saint’s feast day. After the 10 a.m. Mass there was a gathering of the community that included food, fellowship, and games. It was a very family-friendly event and a wonderful celebration of community. The members of the Parish Activities Committee worked so hard in the heat to help make it such a success. Several of them stood over the grills cooking for hours.
At Ste. Marguerite, a Mass was held in French and, once again, people worked very hard in planning the Mass, handling logistics, and arranging for and preparing a meal. It was a joyful celebration with the church filled to the rafters with parishioners from all the parishes of the collaborative. We are grateful to the Franco-American organization and all those who helped in this activity. God willing, we will have many future French Masses together in the collaborative.
The above are examples of what happens every day in our parishes. That is to say, good people are volunteering and giving of their time to serve the Lord. It is not always possible to properly thank people for all they do. Often, the work and sacrifices are largely unseen, but we all benefit from the gifts of each other. May God bless all of you abundantly for all that you contribute to our community.
In Christ,
Rev. Richard F. Clancy

This weekend, Maysoon Khair will be at our parishes representing School of Joy, for children who struggle with learning, and over a hundred Christian families from the birthplace of Jesus who make their livelihood through sales of their hand carved olive wood religious articles. These beautiful items include crosses, rosaries, nativity scenes, and many other religious statues, and will be on display after Masses. Thank you for your prayers and support of these families.

Understanding & Sharing Our Faith
Fast Acting and Long Lasting!
Fr. Michael J. Harkins
No, we aren't talking about the latest “new and improved” laundry detergent. Instead, we mean the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. It is unfortunate that this sacrament is so poorly understood by so many.
Those in their sixties or older learned this sacrament was “Extreme Unction.” As the name implies, it was administered when death was imminent. It also was known unofficially as the last rites. (Some still think of it only as such.)
The Gospels tell us how Jesus healed many who were sick. Usually they were not at death’s door! From the Church’s beginning, Christ’s healing ministry continues to our own day.
In fact, the Letter of St. James (A.D. 90-100) has this to say: “Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint [him] with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven.” (James 5:14-15 - New American Bible)
In this, we can see that although this sacrament is most appropriate as death approaches, it is hardly restricted to that time. It is for anyone who is seriously ill, about to undergo surgery, and the elderly who suffer under the burden of years. The healing associated with this sacrament may be physical. It is always a healing remedy for the soul. At times it may be the sick person’s spirit which suffers along with (and possibly more than) his body.
With no disrespect intended, this article began with the headline “Fast Acting and Long Lasting,” and these words are true. While
Anointing of the Sick may and should be repeated if the sick person’s condition worsens, its healing begins as soon as it is received and this healing has lasting effect!
If an illness worsens soon after the sacrament’s celebration and a priest cannot arrive in a timely fashion, take heart! The former celebration still is “working” and the prayer of the sick person and those gathered at bedside will also be important and of great comfort.
Anointing of the Sick is no longer only the last rites! We should take care that Catholic relatives are anointed while they are seriously sick and not approaching death’s door. In this way they will be able to participate consciously in the celebration and benefit from its graces with greater awareness. So, please: Don't wait until the last minute to call the priest and feel free to
share this article with any Catholics you know.

Men of St. Joseph August Gathering
Saturday the 13th
7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
St. Rita’s Church 158 Mammoth Road, Lowell (Please park in rear parking lot)
Speaker: Christopher Shemchuk
Topic: Defending Our FAITH
“Who are the Men of St. Joseph? We are a group of Catholic guys dedicated to being the spiritual leaders of our families while becoming the best versions of ourselves. Sure, it's a struggle to balance being a father, bread winner, businessman, coach, friend, husband and spiritual leader of your family. The Men of St. Joseph understand that with each other's support and shared accountability it becomes a little easier. Most importantly, we know that if we surrender our day to day problems to God we will be better fathers, husbands and friends. Through Christ, we will be better men. We welcome you to join us on this journey.” (from menofstjoseph.com)

Thank you to all who prayed for and supported our collaborative youth
attending the Steubenville East
Catholic Conference July 15-17!
“By choosing to attend Steubenville East my daughter Olivia and I were able to turn off the secular world and focus on our faith and relationship with Jesus. The worship music was a highlight for both of us. The Holy Spirit was present before, during, and after this retreat in guiding me, and I am so thankful. Because of this experience, it’s easier for me to have an open, ongoing, meaningful dialogue with my teenage daughter about our Catholic faith.” -Robin Sasek, St. Mary Madgalen

The Pilot is an important voice in the public square that brings you the Catholic perspective on current events.
Inspired by the vision of our publisher, Cardinal Seán O’Malley, The Pilot covers it all — from in-depth reporting on Pope Francis to the good works of Boston parishes.
Each week, The Pilot brings you the stories of Boston Catholics who bring the Works of Mercy to life on a daily basis.
Proclaiming the present Holy Year of Mercy, Pope Francis said he wants to make it evident that the Church’s mission is to be a witness of compassion. “Let us not forget that God forgives and God forgives always,” Pope Francis said. “Let us never tire of asking for forgiveness.”
