About

Indian Weavers is a short poem where the poet talks about three

types of garment that the weavers weave at three particular

times of a day. Each stanza of the poem represents the three

important events of human life: birth (childhood), adulthood

(young) and death (old). The colours mentioned in the stanzas

are very significant as they indicate the moods related to the

events.

Weavers, weaving at break of day,

Why do you weave a garment so gay?...

Blue as the wing of a halcyon wild,

We weave the robes of a new-born child.

Weavers, weaving at fall of night,

Why do you weave a garment so bright?...

Like the plumes of a peacock, purple and green,

We weave the marriage-veils of a queen.

Weavers, weaving solemn and still,

What do you weave in the moonlight chill?...

White as a feather and white as a cloud,

We weave a dead man's funeral shroud.

The present condition of weavers-

Today, all over the world, we find the weavers facing very serious problems. Growing industrialization as well as modernization affected their life badly. To get the raw material has become a challaging task for them. Today, people prefer artifial ready-made dresses. In India, the 'Village and Khadi Gramodyog Industry' is absolutely ruined.

The poet has asked a question at the beginning of every

stanza. Explain the effect it creates on the reader.

At the beginning of every stanza, the poetess asks a

question. She was very much eager to know what exactly is

being made by the weavers. The questions show the

eagerness of the poetess. Also, it automatically increases

the eagerness of the readers. The questions prove that the

weavers are very much busy in their work. They are working

happily and seriously. Really, the use of questions made the

poem alive and interesting.

Whatever the case, a poem is unique to its writer. And each poem

Activity Find out information about the ‘Mahavastra’ (Paithani)

of Maharashtra. (Textbook Page No-102)

Paithani is a variety of sari. It is also considered to be made from the finest silk in India.

Paithani is characterised by borders of an oblique square design, with a Peacock

design. Plain as well as spotted designs are very popular among women. Single colored

and kaleidoscope-colored designs are also popular. The kaleidoscopic effect is

achieved by using one color for weaving lengthwise and another for weaving width

wise.

Paithani gets its name from the historical place Paithan in Aurangabad district,

Maharashtra. That was the time when cotton and textiles were greatly exported. The

manufacturing of Paithani increased tremendously. Later THE manufacturing centre of

Paithani shifted from Paithan to Yeola during the Peshwa period.

Traditionally men have been handling the task of weaving on loom. They get a better

support of women, children and the elderly people in the families. This intricate and

tedious skill was passed on from one generation to other.

Now this craft is being taught in various training centers. This has helped people across

communities to get involved in this wonderful craft.
