NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The flowers on the altar this weekend were sponsored by Mariadina and Alexander in memory of Helen Marie Fini. If you would like to sponsor flowers on the altar in

memory of loved ones, living or deceased, please print your name, phone number, and the occasion or loved one you wish to remember on a purple Flower Contribution envelope, which you will find in the church vestibule. Minimum contribution for two vases on the main altar is $75. Please drop off your envelope in the collection basket, or call the parish office, 301-229-7933, and your request will be posted in the weekly bulletin. We can only honor one individual request per weekend, so please bear in mind that, sometimes, the date you require may already be taken. Also, for your information, we will not be able to accept requests for the sponsoring of flowers on specific liturgical dates.

New 3-5 year old CCD program on Sunday - we want to start a 3-5 year old CCD session during Sunday morning CCD. Before going any further in planning, we need to know if there are children! If you have a child(ren) ages 3-

5 who you would seriously consider registering, email Cathy Mills at [email protected]. Since these are very small young learners of the faith, we’‛d like to organize this program like a co-op. Parents would volunteer to help the lead teacher with crafts, plays, or music. So after you sign up your children, you’‛d choose a few Sundays a year to help out. What do think St. Bart’‛s CCD, anyone interested?! Enrollment - over half of our CCD families from last year have already registered for the fall. It’‛s fantastic! The bad news is classes are filling fast, particularly the middle school, and 2nd grade. Forms are in the back of church or available online at the parish website www.stbartholomew.org. Consider being a CCD teacher or Teacher’‛s Assistant -trying to clearly express our Catholic faith can feel overwhelming. That’‛s why the content for lessons is provided for CCD teachers. What a person brings is an openness to hear the nudge from God and the faith-filled sense of adventure to respond. Materials, information about lesson plans and classroom management, as well as plenty of support are provided. You don’‛t have to be perfect to teacher, and teaching is the best way to learn and deepen your own faith. Right now we need a teacher in 4th Grade Sunday, as well as 7th Grade Sunday and 7th Grade Monday. If your children are long out of CCD, finished high school and in college, remember how crazy it was trying to organize schedules and drive your children. If you have the time and interest, consider giving back to the parish and teach. Email Cathy Mills for more information: [email protected]. Preparation for Communion and Confirmation - to receive a sacrament it takes two years of instruction for children. Preparation for Communion starts at the beginning of 1st grade and preparation from Confirmation starts at the beginning of 7th grade. If your child attends a private Catholic school like Stone Ridge or the Heights, they still need to register with St. Bart’‛s to receive the sacrament. Every private Catholic school has their way of preparing for Communion and Confirmation and much of what they do in school will cover St. Bartholomew Parish’‛s requirement for preparation for a sacrament. Please email me, Cathy Mills, if you have questions: [email protected].

Save-the-date! St. Bart's Young Adults will host their second summer social next Saturday, August 15 at 9 a.m. Join fellow 20-39 year olds, married and single, from St. Bart’‛s on a hike at Great Falls. We will meet in front of the church at 9 a.m. to carpool.

Lunch and fellowship to follow (please bring cash). Attention Seniors! Our “First Friday Club” has merged with Our Lady of Mercy’‛s, known as Sodality. We meet every month at 11.45 a.m. for Rosary, Mass, luncheon and many activities. Please join us on Friday, September 4, at our Lady of Mercy. For more information call Sally Aitken at 301-365-4719.

OCTOBER 9-18, 2015 PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY LAND

UPDATE: We now have nine St. Bartholomew's parishioners definitely going on the tour to the Holy Land (that we know about) and several more are considering the Franciscan-led fall Tour of the Holy Land. Fr. David Walthen will be our guide and chaplain. The Franciscans are the official caretakers of all the Holy Land gospel sites and are noted for their excellent tours. We would love to have additional members of our parish community join us on this journey. Time is getting short to make a decision. For details, go to http://www.holylandpilgrimages.org/october-9-18-2015-pilgrimage-to-the-holy-land/ or call the Franciscan Monastery in Washington 202-526-6800 and ask Fr. Walthen to mail you a brochure or contact the travel agent, George's, @800-566-7499 and reference Franciscan Pilgrimage to the Holy Land (100915B). Feel free to call me with any questions, Mary Yerrick 301-229-1427.

Plan your summer reading. The Faith and Fiction Book Group meets six times each year at 1 :30 pm on selected Sundays to discuss books by noted Catholic authors or works that broadly deal with religious and spiritual topics. The three books for the fall semester are: The Wife (1921), the second book of the Kristen Lavransdatter trilogy by Sigrid Undset (Tiina Nunnally translation) on September 20;; Black River (2015) by S. M. Hulse on October 25;; and Our Souls at Night (2015) by Kent Haruf (posthumously) on December 6.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION Parishioner is looking for a position as nanny/housekeeper with a family that can sponsor G5 visa - to start at the end of August or September. ST. BARTHOLOMEW’S CHURCH BETHESDA, MD AUGUST 9, 2015
