1 Staying Safe Online Master Trainers’ Workshop CBSE Training Unit in collaboration with Cybersecurity Education and Research Centre (CERC) Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi Report With increase in the usage of the Internet, there has been an exponential increase in the use of Online Social Media on the Internet. Websites like Facebook, YouTube, Orkut, Twitter, Flickr, Google+, Four Square, Pinterest, and the likes have changed the way the Internet is being used. However, there is a lack of understanding of privacy and security issues on Online Social Media. While using social media has many advantages, it is important for school teachers and parents to be proactive about Internet safety and understand the challenges, advantages, and pitfalls of social media for their students / children and themselves. With an objective to familiarize teachers with the potential benefits as well as challenges of online social media and the Internet, a two days’ Master Trainers’ workshop titled ‘Staying Safe Online’ was organized for the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) by Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi (IIIT-D). Professor Ponnurangam Kumaraguru “PK”, a leading expert and academician at the CERC at IIIT, Delhi was the key Resource Person. Fifty-one teachers from different school in Delhi / NCR attended the Staying Safe Online Master Trainers' Workshop at IIIT Delhi. Among various other topics, the participants in the workshop specifically deliberated and explored Introduction and Basics of Online Social Media (OSM), Types of OSM, Growth and reach of OSM, Threats / Risks of using OSM for Children / Teachers, Incidents: World and India, Introduction to OSM Privacy Settings, How you can help / protect students / parents, Facebook and Twitter Help Centre, specifically for Teachers & Parents. The entire slides, notes, and all information used during the Workshop was shared with the Participants with the hope that the Teachers will use it to deliver the content themselves to Students, other teachers, and Parents in the near future. Joint Secretary and Incharge (Academics and Training), CBSE, Sh. D.T.S. Rao along with Joint Director, CBSE, Dr. Sweta Singh visited the workshop on 08 th October 2015 and interacted with the participants and the assisting research scholars. The participants were found to be actively engaged in the procedures and discussions in the workshop. Feedback from one participating teacher, We learnt accessibility of different social application, network security and much more. It was an exciting exploration of the current social media and excellent opportunity to understand how to stay safe in an ever-connected world.
