• See the smallest federal cemetery inthe nation, marked in St. Inigoes by theUSS Tulip Monument. Union troops es-tablished a refueling facility here for gun-boats patrolling the Potomac during theCivil War. On Nov. 11, 1864, the USS Tulipdeparted from this facility and exploded,killing 47 of 57 men aboard instantly. Ofthe 10 survivors, two later succumbed totheir injuries.

• See a piece of history at the Chesa-peake Beach Railway Museum in Chesa-peake Beach, which features train andamusement park exhibits, summer con-certs andmore. The museum is located at4155Mears Avenue.Visit www.cbrm.org.

Beach finds are always interesting, butpickingupa fossil thatmight bemore than10million years old is a special experience.

There are several public places inSouthern Maryland to search for ancientfossils.

The cliffs in our region hold millionsof years of sediment full of layers of fossils,

which wash out into the rivers and Chesa-peake Bay as the cliffs erode, then backonto the beach, waiting to be found.

Fossils here include the teeth of sev-eral types of sharks, from megalodon totiger sharks, aswell aswhale vertebrae, rayplates and hundredsmore.
