Stavropol Stavropol is an ancient city located in the North Caucasus. It was founded in 1777 as a fortress on the southern boundaries of Russia under the decree of Empress Ekaterina II Stavropol is a Russian rendition of a Greek name Stavropoulos meaning The City of the Cross. Legend has it that soldiers have found a huge cross made out of stone when they were building the fortress in the future city location Today the city of Stavropol is a large administrative, industrial, agricultural, scientific and cultural center of the North Caucasus with a number of historical monuments, museums, libraries, sport facilities, concert halls, supermarkets, bars, and restaurants of national kitchen, hotels. For the religiously inclined, the city has Orthodox churches, and Mosques. Its population is over 450 thousand people. More than 130 nationalities live in friendship and they are always willing to help each other. Stavropol is a students city. There are more than 25 higher educational institutions where about 70 thousand students are trained. Muravyova Established in 1938, the Stavropol State Medical Academy (StSMA) is recognized to be one among the top five medical institutions in the Russian Federation. Nowadays, after seven decades it is the largest educational, scientific and methodical center of medicine in the North Caucasus. About Russian and more than 600 foreign students from 28 countries of the world are trained at its four faculties: General Medicine, Pediatrics, Dentistry and Higher Nursing Education. Besides stated above, there are the Preparatory Course, and the Faculty of Improvement of Professional Skills of teachers of medical schools and colleges. The Post Graduate Faculty, one of the largest in Russia, trains over 3000 physicians in 32 specialties annually Our graduates work in different places of our country and abroad, are the trademark of the Academy. Many of them head scientific research institutes, laboratories, faculties and higher schools chairs. The pride of the academy is its highly skilled scientific and teaching staff. The Academy is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools published by the World Health Organisation. The activity of the Academy has been marked by high international award Earthmaker, which testifies belonging to community of world leaders of various industries, sciences, cultures and national health services. Students of the Academy are encouraged to participate in different research projects, working within the Students and Young Researchers Science Society showing their results at annual conferences and often winning prizes in all-Russian or international fora. The Academy has a library, which numbers about copies of books and periodicals. It has also its own editions, the Academy newspaper Medicus and a scientific practice magazine Medical Bulletin of North Caucasus. Lecture-rooms, laboratories and libraries do not limit the students life. The Academy has 4 students' hostels, a sports complex with a swimming pool, gyms and sauna. There is the sports camp on the Black Sea coast of the North Caucasus, where our teachers and students have a rest every year. Beginning with 2005 English-speaking students from abroad are taught in English what enables them to begin studies without preliminary training at the Preparatory Course. The training is carried out according to the curricula that are specially adapted to operating conditions of the native land and authorized by the Ministry of Public Health of Russia. The Academy has 4 educational buildings, 3 dentistry out-patient departments and clinics of eye microsurgery, of borderline psychic disorders. The majority of clinical departments are located on the grounds of the regional and city medical establishments and they are equipped with modern diagnostic and medical facilities.
