INTRODUCTIONWe have got our task which was given by our lecturer , Madam Hariati Ibrahim

entitled OBSERVATION ON SOCIAL ILLS AT KTM/LRT/PUTRA/MONORAIL STATION.

We have done our researches at four different location of KTM/LRT/PUTRA/

2. BANK NEGARA KTM STATION, JALAN DATO’ ONN, KUALA LUMPUR.

5

Page 6: Statistics for Social Ills Problem.

3. KUALA LUMPUR SENTRAL KTM STATION, BRICKFIELDS, KUALA LUMPUR.

4. KLCC LRT STATION, JALAN AMPANG, KUALA LUMPUR.

We have done our educational visit on Saturday , 23rd July 2011 and 30th July 2011.In

our educational visit, besides doing an observation, we have distribute questionnaires to be

answer by the people around the KTM/LRT/PUTRA/MONORAIL station .We also take pictures

that related to social ills.

From our research, we have observe that many social ills occur in the

KTM/LRT/PUTRA/MONORAIL such as smoking, coupling and others. So ,we think that need

to do something because the social ills problems cannot be solve except we done something to

curbed the problem. This report is being made to discover and discuss the social ills problems, to

see the phenomenon that happen in the society, to know the cause and effect of the social ills

problem, and finally to curbed and solve the problems wisely. We have referred to our lecturer

Madam Hariati Ibrahim for explaning further on our task and also to the public by distributing

the questionnaires to be answer. Other than that, we also refer to the social web such as

www. wikipedia .org/ to gain additional information.

In this report, we will explained you about the problems that occur at the

KTM/LRT/PUTRA/MONORAIL STATION, by adding pictures and some graphical statistics

based on the researches. The explanation will start with our first journey which locate at MID

VALLEY KTM STATION end up with BANK NEGARA KTM STATION. We will explain

further in body content of the research about the problems that we have seen in each of the

location and the questionnaires will be discuss by used the help of graphical statistic presentation

.Last but not least, we will conclude this topic from all the discussion that has been done in the

body content of the research.

THE CONTENT OF THE

RESEARCHWHAT IS SOCIAL ILLS?

There are lots of terms that can be used to define what is actually the meaning of social ills.

1. A social problem is a social condition that a segment of society views as harmful to

members of society and in need of remedy.

2. Social ills are matters which directly affect a person or many members of a society and

are considered to be problems and it also can be related to moral values or both.

3. A social problem is a condition that at least some people in a community view as being

undesirable. Everyone would agree about some social problems, such as murders and

traffic deaths. Other social problems may be viewed as such by certain groups of people.

Although social problems take many forms, they all share two important elements: an

objective social condition and a subjective interpretation of that social condition. The objective

element of a social problem refers to the existence of a social condition. We become aware of

social conditions through our own life experiences, through the media, and through education.

We see the homeless, hear gunfire in the streets, and see battered women in hospital emergency

rooms. We read about employees losing their jobs as business downsize and factories close. In

television news reports we see the anguished faces of parents whose children have been killed by

violent youth.

The subjective element of a social problem refers to the belief that a particular social condition

is harmful to society, or to a segment of society, and that it should and can be changed. We know

that crime, drug addiction, poverty, racism, violence, and pollution exist. These social conditions

are not considered social problems, however, unless at least a segment of society believes these

conditions diminish the quality of human life.

8

Page 9: Statistics for Social Ills Problem.

By combining these objective and subjective elements, we arrive at the following definition:

A social problem is a social condition that a segment of society views as harmful to members of

society and in need of remedy.

Teenagers who play loud music in a public park obviously do not view it as a problem,

but some other people may consider it an undesirable social condition. Some non smokers view

smoking as an undesirable social condition that should be banned or restricted in public

buildings.

Every newspaper is filled with stories about undesirable social conditions. Examples

include crime, violence, drug abuse and environmental problems .Such social problems can be

found at the local, state, national and international levels.

SOCIAL ILL PROBLEMS?

From our educational visit, we have discover what is the social ills problems that occur at

KTM/LRT/PUTRA/MONORAIL station especially at the four location that has been chosen by

us. The social ills are:

LITTERING- Small pieces of rubbish such as paper, cans and bottles, that people have left

lying in a public places.

SMOKING- The activity or habit of smoking cigarettes.

BEGGING- A person who lives by asking people for money or food.

COUPLING- A Pairs of men and women declare in a relationship together.

9

Page 10: Statistics for Social Ills Problem.

OBSERVATIONKTM/LRT/PUTRA/MONORAIL stations also have their own rules and regulations.

We have takes a photo concern to their rules and regulations, it can be proved in the photo 1(see

in the appendix _ ) that KTM/LRT/PUTRA/MONORAIL have the prohibition. While our group

doing the observation, we can found that the public have broken the rules that has be noticed at

each station of KTM/LRT/PUTRA/MONORAIL such as littering , smoking , begging , and

coupling.

LITTERING:

As we know in public area, LRT station , streets , public building government has

been provided by dustbin where we can throw the rubbish safely. But what happened in KLCC,

KL SENTRAL and BANK NEGARA station was unbelievable. As we can see rubbish are

littered everywhere but not in the appropriate place, it can be show in the photo 2 (see in the

appendix _ ). In the photo 3 and 4 (see in the appendix _ ),the dustbin is empty, but still there are

rubbish and bottles under the benches and floor, on the rail and even on the street.

Why this ills still happened even government supplied adequate dustbin? Maybe some

of them do not have awareness self and they think it would wasted their time going to put the

rubbish in the right places. We also think, that our society should be aware of signs that do not

litter at KTM/LRT/PUTRA/MONORAIL. So, by this sign people will be more concerned in

caring for their surroundings.

SMOKING:

Smoking is one of the most crucial problem that occur in Malaysia. Government also

has put a sign where smoking where smoking in the public area are prohibited. Yet, there are

some people still repeat the faulty. They easily smoke in front of the public area. There are some

factors which lead they to smoke, where they are influenced by their friends and may be they are

stress. Other than that, smoking give a big impact to the passive smokers. The passive smokers

will breath in the smoke and cause them to get a chronic diseases. The smokers should stop

10

Page 11: Statistics for Social Ills Problem.

smoking front of the public and they should behave themselves. In every public

area ,government has provide many signboard “NO SMOKING” at the public area. The smokers

should know that smoking is very dangerous for them and also the passive smokers. In a simple

word ,Passive smokers experienced greater risk and percentage to die than the smokers. Last but

not least, smoking also say that smoking is harmful for human being. this can be shown in hadith

Sahih Bukhari:

Volume 7(Book 7),Number 582 Sahih Bukhari

Narrated Abu Huraira

The Prophet said, ”There is no disease that Allah has created except that he has created its

treatment or cure”

BEGGING:

Begging is the one of the list prohibition of KTM/LRT/PUTRA/MONORAIL as we have show

in the photo 1. The beggars with her baby sitting at the streets with a bowl fill with some coins.

This happen because some of them lack of property, homeless and lazy to find the jobs.

However, Malaysia has provided many job opportunities for the citizen. Begging is not the only

solution for the beggar to find the money and support their family. Begging is the one of the

social ills that need to be avoid because the beggars distract people who walks at the streets.

COUPLING:

At KLCC LRT STATION also we can see some people who are coupling. They unashamedly

hugging in front of public in LRT station. As we know, coupling is immoral in front of others.

Religious education must be boosted because every religion here in Malaysia teaches their

followers to be good. Religious education also teaches us moral values which will set up a

standard way of living and to differentiate we as a muslim should know the socialize between

men and women.

11

Page 12: Statistics for Social Ills Problem.

FACTORS OF SOCIAL ILLS

What is the cause and factor affecting the social ills?

According to Dr. M. B. Dass , the environment around the youth and they themselves are

influencing them to bear the fruit of delinquency.

Parent’s fault or family background are one of the main causes of social ills that occur

among teenagers.

Other than that, lack of awareness. This means that they lack awareness and exposure to

religious thoughts. Nowadays, we can see youth practicing free relationship between

men and women.

Lack of education is one of the causes of social ills. Ministry of Education has provide

syllabus for the primary and secondary school students in order to instill a good

behaviour or attitude and civic knowledge. We can say that the person who involved in

social ills problems is maybe the one who has low education.

Influence from peers is also the cause of social ills. Most of the public are influence by

peers when doing something. This is because they always like to try something new and

not think wisely before doing something.

Last but not least, lack of moral values. Nowadays, people have low rate of moral values.

This is because they do not care about others. Moral values need to be instill in each of

individual to prevent us from involve with social ills.

12

Page 13: Statistics for Social Ills Problem.

EFFECTS OF SOCIAL ILLS

What is the effect of social ills?

There are several effects of social ills:

1.Bad interpretation of tourist

Malaysia is one of the country that have a high number of tourist. Tourism sector

would be affected when the social ills spread borderless. This means that bad interpretation from

tourism cause the tourism sector fall and the economy of Malaysia will be decrease.

2.Non-Educated Generation

Social ills is just like a small crime and it will produce non-educated generation. Why

we say that non educated generation will be produced? This is because, they have the knowledge

that has been taught by their teacher in the school but they ignore it and not using the knowledge

wisely. This show that even though we have a generation that have a smart brain, but the social

ills keep increasing from years to years because of this “non-educated generation”

3.Distract the environment

Environment is the source for us to get the oxygen for breathing. Healthy environment

has been affected by this social ills problem. How social ills affect the environment? We know

that the environment will be polluted when there was a littering. Littering is one of the main

social ills that give big effect to the environment. Public does not have awareness and does not

care about the environment. Environment will be distract even we just litter a small rubbish. It

also can cause the place to be dirty and will make you feel uncomfortable.

4.Damage the Public property

13

Page 14: Statistics for Social Ills Problem.

Public property is provided by the government to make the users easier using the public

transport at the station. Citizen should take care the public property well and not to damage it.

This is because to ensure the public property long lasting.
