Statistical system of India

Central statistical organization (C.S.O):-The Central statistical organization(C.S.O) belongs to the ministry of statistics

and programme implementation. It was set up inMay 1951in the cabinet secretariat with

the primary object o pro!i"ing technical lea"er ship in buil"ing up the statistical systemin the country. The main unctions o C.S.O is to pro!i"e a"!isory ser!ices to otherstatistical agencies# $eeping liaison (public relation) with international statistical bo"ies#

preparing an" publishing national accounts statistics# in"ustrial statistics# con"ucting

economic census an" training statistical personal in oicial statistics etc. The C.S.O hasso many "i!isions li$e in"ustrial statistics wing# manpower research "i!ision# national

income "i!ision# population "i!ision etc. The C.S.O is hea"e" by Director Generalwho

belongs to either In"ian statistical ser!ice or In"ian economic ser!ice an" is supporte" bya""itional "irector general# joint "irectors# "eputy "irectors# assistant "irectors an" other

technical an" non-technical personnel.

Functions of C.S.O:-

1) It coor"inates statistical acti!ities o the states an" union territories an" ensurestimely compilation o re%uisite "ata.

&) It is responsible or compilation an" release o national accounts statistics e!ery

year base" on "ata recei!e" rom go!ernment an" non go!ernment sources.') It organies conerences o the central an" state organiations.

) It con"ucts an" compiles an" brings out publications o reports onAnnual survey

of industries(*SI).+) It organies training programs or the central go!ernment an" state go!ernment

statistical personnel.

,) It $eeps liaison with international statistical bo"ies.

) It "eci"es items o inormation in the sur!eys to be ta$en up by the SSO.

/) It con"ucts perio"ic economic census. The irst census was con"ucte" in 10.0) It ta$es up some regular publications such as

a) Annual statistical abstract.b) Annual survey of industries.

c) Montly abstract of statistics.

National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO):

The"ational #ample #urvey $rganizationin In"ia is a uni%ue setup to carry out

sur!eys on socio-economic# "emographic# agricultural an" in"ustrial subjects orcollecting "ata rom house hol"s an" rom enterprises locate" in !illages an" in the

towns. It is a ocal agency o the o!t. o In"ia or collection o statistical "ata in theareas which are !ital or "e!elopmental planning. The ational Sample Sur!ey2irectorate was irst setup in the country in the ministry o inance in 10+3. The

"irectorate was subse%uently transerre" to the cabinet secretariat in 10+ an"

subse%uently in 103 it became a part o SSO in the "epartment o statistics un"er theministry o planning. Since 1000 it is un"er the newly create" ministry o statistics an"

programme implementation.

Obectives of NSSO!

iii) To collect an" publish inormation which will be o use to those engage" ineconomic acti!ities in the country.

Functions of NSSO!i) To con"uct large scale sample sur!eys on subjects li$e househol" consumer

e8pen"iture# employment an" unemployment# health an" me"ical ser!ices etc.ii) It "eci"es the topics to be co!ere" in a particular sur!ey roun".

iii) *gricultural wing o 5O2# SSO has the o!erall responsibility o assisting the

states by "e!eloping suitable sur!ey techni%ues or obtaining reliable an" timelyestimates o crop yiel".

!) SSO e!ery year brings out reports on status o estimation o agricultural

pro"uction in In"ia.!i) SSO has the central responsibility o coor"inating the results o the crop

in Orissa 27S is calle" &e 'ureau of statistics and !conomics has the status o hea"s o

"epartment un"er the planning an" coor"ination "epartment o the o!t. o Orissa.9eore 10+/ it was un"er the "epartment o inance.
