This profile has been compiled using the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2011 Census of Population and Housing. This initiative allows us to recognise value and understand the cultural diversity of the community within Mackay Regional Council boundaries. This document has been developed in response to a number of requests from the community about the population diversity in the Mackay region.

The consideration of cultural diversity in the provision of social and economic services is significant, as clients and customers often have different needs, ideas, concerns, beliefs and views. There are also social, cultural and economic benefits to be gained by communities that recognise and value their cultural diversity.

It is anticipated that this document will highlight the varying numbers of people from different cultural backgrounds living in our region with a view to ongoing consideration of this growing diversity.

This resource highlights the population diversity of our region using the most current census data available. The statistics in this profile cover the local government boundaries of the Mackay Regional Council, which includes Sarina and surrounds, Pioneer Valley and surrounds and Mackay.

While the census data does not always depict an accurate reflection, this information gives a reasonable indication of the diversity represented in the local area. This information details statistics on first generation overseas born

residents and profiles different languages spoken other than English. This resource also details statistical data on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and Australian South Sea Islanders. The information does not detail information on second generation data.

A further breakdown of information across localities and collection districts is available on the Australian Bureau of Statistics website www.abs.gov.au

Indigenous origin of Mackay origin 2011

Australian South Sea IslandersAustralian South Sea Islanders have been formally recognised as a distinct cultural group in Australia. Mackay is believed to be home to the largest population of Australian South Sea Islanders, approximately 6000 people, (ASSI protocols document 2001).

Unfortunately, the 2006 and 2011 Census Usual Resident count of persons with ASSI Ancestry was undercounted particularly in Mackay Region.

The Office of Economic and Statistical Research, Queensland Treasury has suggested that caution is used when using ancestry data from the 2006 and 2011 census for the Australian South Sea Islander community.
