DefinitionsSolid:is the state in which matter maintains a fixed volume and shape

Liquid: is thestate in which matter maintains a fixed volume but forms to the shape of its container

Gas: is the state in which matterexpands to occupy whatever volume is available.

MATTERMatter is EVERYWHERE

Matter: anything that has mass and takes up space.

Matter comes in three forms:SolidsLiquidsGasClick here to look at some examples!

Physical Changes: Discuss and identify matter as liquids, solids, and gases3

Gas

Air is a gas. You can feel gases. For example, you can feel air when the wind blows. You cannot see or hold air.

Helium is a gas. Helium is lighter than air. When helium is put in a balloon, it will cause the balloon to rise in the sky. You cannot see or hold helium.

Steam is a gas. Steam expands freely into the air. You cannot hold steam, but you can see it.

Identify and describe examples of physical changes in the gas state.4

Liquids

Rain is a liquid. Rain is water that falls from the sky and takes up space in the sky as it falls. When it hits the ground, it takes up space as a puddle!

You can see rain, but it will fall through your fingers if you try to hold it.

Milk is a liquid. You can see milk. If you try to hold milk, it will run through your fingers.

Identify and describe examples of physical changes in the liquid state.

5

SolidsExamples of Solids:

Wood is a solid. You can see and touch wood.

Sand is a solid. Sand is very small pieces of crushed rock. You can see and touch sand.

Ice is a solid. Ice is frozen liquid. You can see and touch ice.Not sure? Click here to review the states of matter definitions.

Identify and describe examples of physical changes in the solid state.

6

Change of MatterMatter can change from being a liquid to a solid to a gas.

Lets take a look at water Click the water!

7

Water can change from liquid to solid when !

Liquid water

Solid Water (ice)

Describe changes in the states of matter produced by heating and cooling.8

Water can go back to liquid when heated. When water boils it creates steam,

Solid Water (ice)

Liquid water

Steam (Gas)

Now lets practice!Click here to play a fun game on Solids, Liquids and Gases!
